Welcome

Welcome to Wikinews

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Getting Help

Possibly the fastest way to get help is to look for the regulars in the #wikinews IRC channel on Freenode. See this page for more details. Remember, many people will lurk, connected long-term, but not regularly checking for messages. Please be patient when looking for answers to queries, it can be annoying to see someone ask a question but leave before you notice it.

Hello!

Hi MisterWiki! I just wanted to make it clear that I have nothing against you here, since I am very active here and so you may be seeing a lot of me. Wikipedia and Wikinews are very different, and as far as I'm concerned you are most welcome here and I have no hard feelings against you. What goes on over there stays there. It would be nice to see something positive come out of this. :) Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 20:27, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Original reporting

Where is the original reporting indicated here [1]? I thought everything was covered by the sources. If there is original reporting then it should have notes on the talk page. Nice article by the way, I've published it. ;-) Tempodivalse [talk] 03:00, 25 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well yes, I just could add that it lasted about 15 or 20 seconds. And thanks for publishing it. --Diego Grez let's talk 03:02, 25 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

images from other news organization

Just a reminder, you can't upload images from somebody competiting with us. So any image from another news organization is not ok.(The exception being if the article is about something that the competiting news organization did, like CNN typo mixes up prospective U.S. presidential candidate with Osama bin Laden.) Bawolff 02:33, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK. --Diego Grez let's talk 12:53, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Just to add to that, you might find something like a VoA article where you could reuse the images; however, that would require it to actually be an image they owned and thus, per their remit, released into the public domain. If they source from someone like AFP it will generally indicate so on the image and you can be sure you can not use it. --194.72.106.44 (talk) 14:52, 27 March 2010 (UTC) [Brian, but forgot my work account password - please don't DDoS this IP ;-)]Reply

Chile portal

Would you be willing to maintain the Chile portal? The lead was two years old before I updated it, and I think that with your constant reporting the portal could survive pretty well. Benny the mascot (talk) 03:40, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oka. I did some retouches on the portal. Tell me if you like it ;-) --Diego Grez let's talk 19:04, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Looks great! Hopefully you've read this discussion as well? In theory the change (if it gets consensus) shouldn't affect you too much...you'll just have to edit a different page. FWIW... Benny the mascot (talk) 19:21, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

What's the problem here? I've never had any issues with Pitsilemu's welcomes, they aren't any more random than the stuff we sometimes do in IRC, plus it helps give the channel a more fun/welcome atmosphere, imo. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 13:22, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I award Diego Grez the Barnstar of National Merit for his diligent efforts to expand Wikinews's coverage of Chile.

I've always meant to give you a barnstar someday; I just never got around to actually doing it. Please accept this as a token of appreciation for all of your hard work.

By the way, I saw your RFA. It's quite disappointing that the rest of the community hasn't developed much confidence in you, despite your productive tenure here. For what it's worth, I would have supported you if you hadn't withdrawn the nomination. Anyway, have a great day! Benny the mascot (talk) 14:55, 17 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your bot

Diego, if the only thing your bot's going to be doing is capitalising "special:/user:" and putting spaces after bullets, maybe you shouldn't run it at all? Especially to talk and policy pages, where it changes the meaning of users' posts? It looks exactly the same either way, it's honestly just pointless edits. Also, please make sure the machine doesn't remove legitimate links; that's already happened twice and it could be looking at a bot-block if it persists. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 21:28, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Huhu. I'll remove the cosmetic changes part, but the one that removed links, was because they were bad links (interwikis). --Diego Grez return fire 21:29, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but the bot shouldn't remove links on archived discussion pages, such this. That changes the meaning of another user's post - almost always a big no-no. Tempodivalse [talk] 21:32, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Tempo, sure, I just have to remove the cosmetic changes part ;) --Diego Grez return fire 21:32, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I thin what Tempo is trying to say (Tempo, please correct me if I'm mistaken) is that maybe your bot is doing much. I was watching the recent changes (avoiding WP for a few hours after the shitstorm I created yesterday) earlier and I have to say it was bordering on flooded by your bot and the edits it was making didn't seem to be doing anything consequential. Maybe it might not be such a good idea to run it- if it was doing that on WP, I have to say, it would never get BAG approval. I admire your skill at being able to write a bot, it's not something I could hope to do, but perhaps it might be an idea to leave it for a bit? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:32, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think so. (and I didn't write it) --Diego Grez return fire 22:33, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't so much concerned about the flooding, but more about the purpose and point of the edits since they were - as you said - inconsequential - and removed content from discussion pages. Maybe just stick to interwikis? Tempodivalse [talk] 22:40, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK. --Diego Grez return fire 22:42, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Care to explain why you reverted my edit using rollback? Inferno, Lord of Penguins (talk) 22:08, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The article is completely new, for sure, but it is not breaking news. Breaking news are supposed to be news on internationally-relevant topics, unlike this one. I've never heard of this guy, absolutely. And it is {{celebrity "news"}} too. --Diego Grez return fire 22:11, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, it would have helped if WN:Breaking news actually said what constitutes breaking news on it...alright. I'll remember that in the future. (If I make a mistake in the future, could you leave an edit summary explaining exactly what said error is? Otherwise I just get confused and might make it again. Thanks.) Inferno, Lord of Penguins (talk) 22:25, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Diego, once again, please don't use rollback to revert edits that aren't your own or blatant vandalism. In this instance it would have been much more appropriate to use the "undo" button, with at least some reason as to why you're reverting. It's especially frustrating to new contributors when their edits are treated like this. Tempodivalse [talk] 23:55, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's okay, sorry if I was too blunt. Just try to be a little more careful in the future, is all  . Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 00:01, 17 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

To be clear, I don't think it's worth making a fuss about, I just wanted to know what I did wrong. Now I know, so it's all good. Inferno, Lord of Penguins (talk) 00:11, 17 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

One of the articles you published

Hi Diego, just a heads-up, you may be interested in this discussion over an article you recently published. Tempodivalse [talk] 14:32, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

A few notes

Diego, this feels kind of odd to be asking of you since you're far more established here than I am, but, please be more careful, particularly when reverting edits. For example, undoing a brand new editor's change without any more explanation than "no" is most unhelpful. On another note, I feel it would have been wise to leave this publish for a few more minutes- it needed a few aesthetic changes before publication which I was in the process of making when you published it. There are other examples, but I just want to get my point across. You need to think before you press buttons- undoing that edit with that summary was very bitey and publishing articles is not a race- if a better article results from leaving it for half an hour, that's a better result than having an imperfect article published. Sorry to berate you like this, really I am, but it needs to be said. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:51, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Longer statement

Fox News's attempt to slime us for hosting artworks seems to have mostly blown over, which was pretty predictable, and would likely have happened far faster if it weren't for Jimbo's attempted cover-up. So long as we can point to a compelling educational value in our controversial images, it would be hard to really attack us and make us stick. Indeed, had Jimbo acted sensibly, he'd have made a press release pointing out the educational value of hosting notable works by French Decadent artists, and Fox News would've had a much weaker article that didn't include them being able to talk about "thousands" of deletions - and yet look at how much remains! (It was actually about 400 deletions, before the undeletions started. One suspects Jimbo's the one that fed them that thousands line somehow, not bothering to check, and... well, that's speculation.) Anyway, this would've been more-or-less over with, had sensible behaviour reigned.

But our defense depends on educational value. If the images don't have a legitimate educational value, if they're only intended to provoke, shock, and push the boundaries, with no artistic, historical, or educational value, then we're going to find it hard to defend ourselves. So we probably do need a policy on sexual content, but it can't be based on lies about laws, or knee-jerk capitulations to a scandalmongering media outlet: Instead, it needs to be about education.

Competent behaviour by Jimbo would've resulted in a review of the educational value of our images, and I'm sure that we'd have found some which should've been deleted. I don't know, honestly, I'm not that interested in photography, and don't really want to look at random pornographic images, in deletion logs that require you to click through to the full-sized image just to find out what they were. But notable artworks attacked and deleted, including some from my own field of expertise, engravings.

Look at it this way. One of my favourite engravers, and one which I have quite a number of Featured Pictures from, is Gustave Doré. His engravings to Dante's Inferno, which I only own a rather beaten-up copy of (though with the engravings themselves in good condition) are considered some of the best illustrations produced for Dante's work. However, the Inferno contains nudity and a lot of extreme violence. Doré depicts that. Now, imagine my reaction to seeing Jimbo deleting artworks as pornographic, at the same time as advocating for sadomasochistic works to be included in the list, and refusing to talk about where the line's going to be drawn until he's deleted everything - and that immediately after he had seemingly agreed artworks should be protected, and is now deleting artworks. That's pretty much how I got involved with this. Artworks I love, which are considered some of the masterworks of engraving, contain some incidental nudity, and some fairly extreme violence, because that's what the book they're illustrating is like. Who knew where it was going to end?

It's very hard to rebuild a destroyed collection. If we delete, as Jimbo did, Felicien Rops and Franz von Bayros - notable artists with their own articles on English Wikipedia - can we ever get their works back? My experience has shown that we don't have a lot of things you'd think we would in engravings, and have very few contributors of new scans of them. Once we decide artworks are pornography, even if this interpretation exists only in the mind of Fox News and Jimbo, how can I trust him not to suddenly decide that this illustration of The Inferno isn't pornographic too, deleting hours of work? Or deciding that Loki being tied naked to a rock with a snake dripping venom on him was BDSM, and so had to be deleted? How about this image from the Library of Congress, which I think is A. a horrible image, but B. does an exceptionally good job at illustrating why The Taming of the Shrew is rather uncomfortable to modern audiences, by bringing out the inherent misogyny?

Jimbo wrote that he "had thought that a good process would be to engage in a very strong series of deletions, including of some historical images, and then to have a careful discussion about rebuilding. That proved to be very unpopular and so I regret it. It also may have had the effect of confusing people about my own position on what to keep and what to get rid of."

However, when challenged about one of the artworks he deleted, he wrote that "I have redeleted the image for the duration of the cleanup project. We will have a solid discussion about whether Commons should ever host pornography and under what circumstances at a later day - June 1st will be a fine time to start."

In short, he was acting in a way that he says was "confusing people about [his] own position on what to keep" while he point-blank refused to discuss any of his actions for nearly an entire month.

Is it any wonder, in those circumstances, that people got upset, and that there was no way of telling where it would end?

[There. Divide that up a bit, slip in some questions of your choice, and you should have a decent article on my views =)]

Diego: An obituary is more than just an article about someone's death. It also goes into detail about the main events in the person's life - for example, British Formula Two driver Henry Surtees dies after race accident not only explains the circumstances of the new development (in this case the death; it could also be something like a funeral) - it also gives an account of his short life. Reinforcing our guideline for approaching interviewees

I notice that you told Adam Cuerden: "The interview is for Wikinews, by the way." Surprisingly (to me) your source was unaware that no one can promise publication, and Wikinewsies can only represent ourselves as individuals, not a group or community.

In future, it is best to avoid mentioning Wikinews unless asked. Allow me to remind you of the words in bold near the bottom of WN:OR: "when contacting sources, you must represent yourself as an independent author/researcher, not as a 'representative' of Wikinews."

Your mistake was one of omission. I put it down to your inexperience, and a quite reasonable expectation that Mr Cuerden was aware of how wikis such as Wikinews operate.

Stuff happens, especially to inexperienced Wikinewsies, like me: a year ago I taped some interviews that didn't get published due to circumstances. (I am glad I remembered not to mention Wikinews. I may not get friendly treatment the next time those sources see my face, but Wikinews is unharmed.)

I suggest (from my shared inexperience):

  1. Offer a polite personal apology to Mr Cuerden for giving him false expectations. (His misunderstanding is your fault.)
  2. Don't be discouraged. Keep politely gathering news (OR). I suspect that professionalism only takes experience to learn.

Just to be clear, the article was not published at the time I removed it from the lead. It had been published, briefly, but it wasn't anymore since Brian McNeil had removed the template. Without the template, it was not in Category:Published, and therefore it didn't appear on the DPL on the main page — even though it did appear as a lead. You published the article, by adding the template — the old-fashioned way, by hand, rather than by using EasyPeerReview. --Pi zero (talk) 04:57, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please don't do it again

You are wrong about it not being disruptive. It's corrosive to the project. BTW, if you successfully provoke him, of course it's your fault; that doesn't make it any less his fault, but fault is not zero-sum. --Pi zero (talk) 00:11, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Justin Bieber on main page

Hi Diego. As I said in my edit summary, he does have a huge fanbase, and having that on the front page will bring them into the site. If just one of those then chooses to stay and edit, that's A Good Thing. Personally, I have no interest in him. As for saying "it's not news", then why was it not nuked, or declined at the reviewing stage. One of the criteria is that it has to be news for it to be published, and this was published (I do note it wasn't you who reviewed and okayed it). Seems a bit elitist to me to say its newsworthy enough go be published, but we can't let people read it. Does the Main Pag. e have topics that are banned? If so I wasn't aware. Matthewedwards (talk) 23:40, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

No. BarkingFish just beated me to review it, and I was going to tag it as not news, because it is not. There are more important topics to cover than a worthless singer that always repeat the same word. Also, the fact that it appears on the automaticly-generated right sidebar and on Google News, it doesn't change much. Diego Grez return fire 23:50, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

It looks like diego tried to publish the article [5] but easy peer review failed. If easy peer review didn't detect it failed (it should detect, but it doesn't always as its a piece of crap ;) ), it presents diego with the success screen, which advises him to use Make Lead. Make lead itself doesn't check if the article is published, but assumes that if you got to that point its already been checked. Bawolff 17:47, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why so against Wackynews?

By golly, why on earth are your so against these? If you say the style is so bad, why not leave some comments about how to fix it instead of saying "it's horrible"? It's something new, and Wikinews needs something new. --Shankarnikhil88 (talk) 23:47, 8 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm not against them, I just don't think they are newsworthy, and the King of New Zealand's article fails so epicly the WN:SG that it just couldn't be published as it is now. Capisci? Diego Grez return fire 23:52, 8 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, Wikinews doesn't need something new, it needs people reviewing the good articles we're already writing...Why are we so against it? I'm so against it because it's the confluence of a few bad ideas: Wackynews (which is often tenuously "wacky"), Shorts (which never get reviewed on time) and Notnews. When articles are dying by the armload in the queue because people aren't reviewing, it dilutes Wikinews's integrity to deliberately load its output with time-wasting crap. --Killing Vector (talk) 00:00, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I know that the Newsroom is butchering half of the articles created, including many stale ones that should've been published days before. Maybe Wikinews doesn't need something new, it needs more reviewers and reviewers that review. That's why I'm trying to become a reviewer. Worried that I would have passed that Wackynews Shorts? Probably not without a lot of editing; your standards rise when you become a reviewer.--Shankarnikhil88 (talk) 00:24, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, I do review articles sometimes, but I have been busy recently sorting the requests for permisions in subpages, but I will do some reviews now. It's sad that almost no one actually edited Wikinews. Diego Grez return fire 00:28, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Its less of something new and more of a centralisation of something old! Just because you in vision something different to I, doesn't mean you have the right to be openly counteractive! De-flooding Fire in the Hole

so you have an account readily available for when you want to make potentially controversial edits, since you don't have the ability to temporarily de-flood yourself whenever something comes up. Longer explanation here. --Pi zero (talk) 17:39, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pi zero, nothing that I did with "Fire in the Hole" was really controversial rather than moving pages, something I could not do with my main account because it triggered the abuse filter "Pattern vandalism #4", that disallowed me the right to move 'em. Otherwise, I would have done them by myself. Also, I reviewed one page with it, but it clearly showed my name, I have nothing to hide. I still can't move pages. That's my reasoning. Diego Grez return fire 17:56, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Um, that's not what I meant. It's not that you did anything controversial with Fire in the Hole, it's that you did something controversial, period. Therefore, you need to have the means to do controversial things without the flood flag, which is the ethical way to do them. An admin would just temporarily de-flood themself. Since you have to ask someone else to toggle the flag for you, and that's not practical when something comes up that you want to act on in real time, as long as you're hanging on to the flood flag for an extended period, you need to have an account available to you that doesn't have flood.
I acknowledge the page move problem is a puzzle. You could, I suppose (but am not fond of this idea), temporarily have two alternate accounts, one with and one without the flood flag; the pre-existing one would have to have the flood flag, because the second alternate would be new and therefore incapable of moving pages. If you've got a better way to reconcile the needs for a non-flood account and a move-capable flood account, I'd be glad to hear it. --Pi zero (talk) 18:34, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, yes, I misunderstood the original comment. I don't think I would need any moves from now, but if I would have to use "Fire in the Hole" again to move, I don't think it would flood the Recent Changes, so no flood flag for it anymore, for security reasons (it's the account I use in the school and cyber-cafes). --Diego Grez return fire 18:39, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Don't...

.. involve yourself in the Greg L/Tony1 debacle. Remember what is important on Wikinews is content in the main namespace.

Let them reiterate, the one or two points they feel justified in pursuing me over, criticising first hitting a cornerstone project policy, and objecting to being chastised for such; that little fad will pass if their baiting is ignored. You, I assume, note that near every edit takes the section it is in over the limit at which I can respond inline. I assume this is deliberate, I have highlighted the problem repeatedly.

ShakataGaNai is, apparently, going to review what I consider their disruption and descent into adversarial Usenet-style debate. Would that there were more contributors of my own age who remember Usenet. All that is missing, so far, is invocation of Godwin's Law.

You do good content work, and help out with simpler automated tasks; don't march into a minefield of politicing. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:45, 26 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just guessing — if Diego used HotCat on the revision that's displayed when EPR completes, that would... I think... erase the changes to the page by EPR, because HotCat would be working off the revision just before the EPR edits.
Even without that, though, EPR had failed to properly publish the article because it gets confused when one of the sources is commented out: it removed the {{review}} tag correctly, but put the {{publish}} tag inside the comment. --Pi zero (talk) 21:11, 12 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please, please try to ignore the rude comments about your writing that pop up from the feedback form. People are entitled to express their opinions, no matter how stupid they may be. I don't think random readers need to hear "I'm sure you wouldn't be capable of writing a paragraph at most" even if it is true. --InfantGorilla (talk) 08:26, 20 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Voice recorder?

You should upload a voice recording of your eyewitness account of last night's aftershock. Then Turtlestack can splice it into Audio Wikinews. (I don't think anyone ever gives him audio!)

Maybe we could link it from the web article too.

Unfortunately I don't speak or read a word of Tibetan, but it seems from the user's global contributions[6], and lack of blocks, that this was a good faith attempt to edit the wiki in Tibetan.

I think this might not be a 'blocking' mistake. (The photo upload was probably a PD US Dept of Defense image, but I can't translate the caption, so I support the deletion.)

--InfantGorilla (talk) 11:49, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I'm not sure. They were doing edits that were out of the scope of English Wikinews. If they want a Wikinews in Tibetan, then ask for one, but this is not their playground. Will shorten the block to two weeks, though. Diego Grez return fire 19:17, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sure. In hindsight I think it is best to delete and warn before blocking. --InfantGorilla (talk) 13:17, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's worse than Fetchcomms describes. The article itself did not have the {{breaking review}} tag replaced by {{publish}}; so it isn't in Category:Published and does have a review tag on it, which doesn't look good on a lead article. Wackywace has sighted it, but that only put it into Articles weirdly flagged. --Pi zero (talk) 11:51, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ummm

The article that I recently created on Saturday, will not be updated, so delete. This is the reason why I say that you need to worry about these articles that easily goes out of date faster before the others. If this place can't have up to date news coming in how do you even expect people to review these when they are freaken 5 days old. I understand that this doesn't have a lot of reviewers, but this is pitiful. I know they can review more articles than this. I try when I can, but with real life issues, I am not able to. Also I seen that the Formula One article was published.......From now on the NASCAR articles will be the same!!!!!! Which means it should even have to be checked it it has the same type of sources and the same words. Now give me a break. This is very frustrating. Furthermore, I don't see how it is out of date, I normally create them on Tuesday, then they are normally reviewed on today. It seems like since Tempo left this is dead! Nascar1996 23:40, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey, Nascar1996. I'm not guilty nobody reviewed your article, but seriously, an article about something that happened on Sunday isn't newsworthy on Wednesday/Thursday. I am not guilty you are frustrated either, I have more important things to do than review articles, but I still try to do what I can. Your article is stale, and Tempodivalse =! Wikinews. It is constructed by all of us, and what you're doing is not worth anything. --Diego Grez return fire 23:59, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I know it wasn't your fault, but you are the one who votes on it. Also, fine then if my stuff isn't important as some as this stupid stuff......I say you don't even care...but I'm DONE]. Nascar1996 00:39, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Diego, Nascar1996 is a valued contributor. Tensions run high when an article goes stale in the queue. We all try, and we don't always succeed. Let's not take it out on each other. --Pi zero (talk) 00:35, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I know, Pi zero. I also had some of my first articles deleted for being stale, but it didn't let me down. I have nothing against you, Nascar, but the article is almost four days old, and is not as newsworthy as it was on Sunday. It's not funny you're retiring, either. --Diego Grez return fire 01:40, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Harping on about Tempodivalse is most unproductive. First, writing up coverage of a sporting event two days after it took place is already bordering on stale. The Russian guy who does F1 coverage kicks out his articles a few hours after the race ends; and it is not "parochial". Formula One has a wide, international audience - in stark contrast to the US-centric nature of Nascar. We have all lost articles on staleness grounds; the best way to avoid such is to submit outstanding copy. Anything looking in need of a couple hours copyediting before an actual review is always given lower priority. If you wish to berate people for not reviewing your work, start a little closer to home - i.e. Amerikans who should know the sport. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:53, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Whatever is what I have to say. I created the article two hours after the race. Also you don't know if their not world-wide is true or not; you don't live everywhere. NASCAR is a popular sport world-wide. Not as much as F1, but NASCAR (wait a minute, its not Nascar?) does have a big population of fans. Half of this news is not for a crowd as big as NASCAR anyway! And if you didn't notice, the NASCAR article is the most popular article for about two hours, then stays in the first ten for about two days. This is the reason I'm leaving, everyone says what I'm doing is not important. I'm going to stay at Wikipedia where my work is appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nascar1996 19:16, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • One more comment: This is not only about the article. Nascar1996 19:21, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
      • I understand your frustration Nascar but, seriously, crying out loud because for once your article is going to be deleted is not helping. My Pichilemu articles are something that "nobody cares about", because Wikinews is not as popular as Wikipedia, and its audience is mostly US-based, but I don't feel frustraded about it, by contrast, I feel happy I'm helping in some way to this project, and informing people from far places about my hometown. This may be similar to what it is NASCAR for you; I didn't know about that sport until you started creating articles here. I learned something new ;-) Diego Grez return fire 21:15, 28 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
        • Thanks for not deleting the article, but I'm still going to take a break from this wiki. I may or may not return because it is getting really complicated to fully write the article about the race, and the news article. I guess this is good bye until possibly February 2011, but I may create one more article here. It would be who wins the championship, which if it is Jimmie Johnson it has a historical importance from being the first driver to ever win five consecutive championships. I'll activily be looking at my talk page and see how this is going. If it improves, I may come back earlier. Thanks for your lessons :), and happy editing. Hello! Your bot has been flagged on fa.wikinews. Best regardsSahim (talk) 19:20, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ultra stale? :-)

Granted, it's stale, but not that stale. The most recent source is three days old, and the event happened less than a week ago. (The author dated it to the event rather than to the composition of the article.) --Pi zero (talk) 19:48, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ah... --Diego Grez return fire 20:36, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Dated to sources is irrelevant on Wikinews. As I'm fond of saying, "Facts don't cease to be facts, but news ceases to be news."
That being said, I'm not at all opposed to scientific, or more technically complex pieces being given extra leeway. However, such should be an allowance to seek quotes or further insights, from primary sources. Ditto for obits. Many mainstream publications will post a brief death announcement, then a far more reflective piece once associates and archives have been consulted. It pains me that output "quantity" is low; my gut feeling is that the best counter to this is quality. But, perhaps this is a subject for wider discussion on the WC. --Brian McNeil / talk%
Indeed. Starting from UK court jails man for trolling online tribute pages, which was on Monday, of all the articles published recently I have written three and published seven, making only two articles I haven't been involved with. Over this week's working days I have felt at times like I'm running this site and a few folk help me - which isn't a fair reflection (every article takes at least two) but doesn't feel far off. Once again, getting folk to review is the main problem. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 21:36, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Due to such low activity levels, I've braved use of a mobile phone for copyedit and review work. I have to thank BRS for doing more than just cursory checks where I've been forced into heavy-handed rewrites. I would refer all contributors who may peruse this discussion to the heavily edited Orwell quote I added to the style guide. Neither wonder our local university expects freshers to spend two years learning to write. Even Prof. Jones of Herriot Watt dispaired of postgrads with no ability to present a cogent argument in their final thesis papers. [Sorry Diego, the vitriol is not directed at you - you do better than many 'supposed' native speakers - if you've the grades, you'd have no problem studying at a "quality" UK institution]. Incidentally, I spent yesterday afternoon in Edinburgh's Central Library; when I expressed delight at an old-fashioned card index system, I think I could've had the female librarian for dinner; dewey-decimal seems like a certain secret handshake to these guardians of knowledge, or the fact that you know of such a system is some sort of aphrodisiac. :D --Brian McNeil / talk 22:16, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Turkey lifts ban on YouTube‎

Actually, this article wasn't due to be archived until tomorrow (when it would have been the only one archived; there won't be any to archive now for over 46 hours). Only articles published on the 31st were due for archiving tonight. Which means nothing was due to be archived tonight, because there were no articles published on the 31st. That's happened several times lately; there weren't any on the 5th, either, and almost weren't any on the 6th.

I always keep track of what to archive using the list at WN:ARCHIVE#To archive.

(Reminder, in these grim times: add the archive tag first — and a further wrinkle I learned the hard way: make sure it's really off the main page before protecting it. A null edit to the main page may be required to make this happen. And even worse than that, before even starting the archiving process, check that the article isn't one of the 5 leads; I actually had to change one of the leads before archiving an article a few nights ago.) --Pi zero (talk) 01:51, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ah ok. I was looking for a quote. Remember that it's normally not a good idea for us to quote a rival news agency directly like that. We can use quotes that they recorded other people as saying, but we shouldn't take their words and make them our own, quote or not. I'll rephrase the sentence slightly to fix it. Almost done with the article:). Gopher65talk 02:47, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Whilst this user is clearly still getting used to Wikinews, they are - unlike other users we have seen - trying hard to get their head round the place. In this case, when it became apparent they weren't getting it, they had the common sense and decency to seek an explanation. They weren't trolling by any means. I am not so sure if it has been the first time they have done this. (will try to find some diffs) And when they were told it wasn't right, they come now, like three months after, and do it again. I believe the block was perfectly okay, and in my opinion they are trolling. Just my opinion, it's not like it matters much to you... Diego Grez return fire 19:13, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Account Creation Improvement Project

Hello,

You signed up on the Account Creation Improvment Project on the Outreach wiki. Thanks.

Now, we are looking for help. We are going to test the pages that are in the account creation process right now, against any pages that you create. More information.

No worries!

Sigh. Well, you need to slow down some. There were trouble signs on this article, visible with some time to study it. Two main authors, neither one of whom has ever written a Wikinews article before, and one of whom (the one whose material was at the front) had apparently no experience at all of Wikinews. Statements in the text that are highly suspect before one even tries to check them in the sources — I never have attempted to do a thorough fact-check, just chosen specific suspicious passages and tried to check them (and every one of those suspicious passages I ended up removing or greatly modifying). I suppose I should have speedily failed the article last night when I first sensed there was a problem... which doesn't actually mitigate your part in this, that is, doesn't share the blame, but does expand it to include me. --Pi zero (talk) 13:14, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please see Wikinews:ARCHIVE#Post-archival edits. It's not even archived yet, but either way, spelling fixes are allowed. "Internet" is correct, "internet" is not. Please undo your revert. Thanks, fetch·comms 17:15, 31 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Grumble, grumble. Fetchcomms, please explain the issue to the original author. (I, too, would have been astounded if Egypt could close down The Internet. But, "internet traffic" and "internet access" are correctly capitalised.) --Brian McNeil / talk 18:51, 31 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Really? The AP Stylebook and a few other sources (NYT, APA, etc.) seem to prefer "Internet" in all usages. w:Internet capitalization conventions says a little about it; personally, I don't think "internet access" is correct when it's referring to the Internet as opposed to a generic internetwork. I don't really care, though, lest this turn into the second capitalization debate I've had today. fetch·comms 05:20, 1 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Apology accepted

I think it has been unfortunate for too long that there has been hostility from Wikinews towards Wikipedia and towards me in particular. I can report that many people have simply stayed away because of it - "why bother dealing with such attitudes?" is a natural response from many people.

I have given similar advice to many projects: removing rights of any kind from people we know full well are trustworthy on such slim grounds as "good security" (in this case, for example, security against what exactly?) or "they haven't made any edits here in a long time" is a bad idea. A better idea is to find people who have rights, for whatever reason, and reach out to them with an attitude of trust and kindness: "Hey, Jimbo, I noticed you have reviewer rights on Wikinews and haven't used them. I wonder if you'd like to come on IRC sometime and get a tutorial and see what we're doing with it - I think you'll find it fun and interesting, and we'd love your support."

Instead I got this frankly bizarre and combative discussion. To the extent that people are treated in this way generally, Wikinews will continue to be less successful than it deserves.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:43, 6 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Miyagi

Sendai is a city, Miyagi is a prefecture (a province or a state equivalent for Japan). Sendai is in Miyagi. The quake was off Miyagi. The tsunami damage is greatest in the Tohoku region (a region is a group of prefectures). So, the Japanese Meteorological Agency (responsible for tsunami forecasts) refers to it as Tohoku. Wikipedia refers to it as Sendai. I split the difference, and used Miyagi. 184.144.160.156 (talk) 04:40, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

<grin> In the USA we have a similar setup. A city (lets use Red Wing, Minnesota, USA) is located in a local administrative region (generally a county or parish, depending on the state), which is inside a state. Red Wing is in Goodhue County in the state of Minnesota, one of the United States. Sendai is in the Miyagi prefecture, which is in the Tohoku region of Japan. - Amgine | t 05:23, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Recent 'drama'

I hope my recent contributions in an effort to defuse an unacceptable situation meet with your approval.

You may note the "post-mortem" item on a sub-page of Geoff's talk; your comments on that, subsectioned, would be most welcome.

Geoff starting on, what I felt was an attempt to lay groundwork for defence of later outbusts, isn't. A followup in the same form based on the actual version reviewed may reinforce that more-than-serious quality concerns existed; plus any remarks on xe's response to what I characterised as a "terse rejection"(see xyr talk).

Obviously I'd want my advice on WN:AAA considered, possibly given clear indication it meets with community consensus, and a strict interpretation and application of action suggested therein.

Would you concur?

Three articles in five minutes

(Might as well get this over with. Shudder.)

Diego, you published three articles in five minutes, with no edits to any of them, and no edits to any of several other articles you'd published in the hours before. Two of those last three had international-audience issues with the first sentence (and one with the headline), all three had some shortage of categories and the one that didn't have international-audience issues had severe under-categorization, and at least the last one had bigger issues — a rambling first paragraph starting and ending with purple prose... Even after pulling the poetry I've grave doubts the article as a whole is properly neutral (but I physically can't do the sort of in-depth study necessary to be sure — it's 3am where I am, and after at least three all-nighters for Wikinews in as may weeks I simply don't have it in me).

Don't ever rubber stamp articles. (BarkingFish's dereviewer, only recently ended you will note, left us one more critical reviewer shorthanded for the lowest-output months in the history of the project.)

As a simple technique that may be of great help, make a point of always looking for some useful edit to make to an article before publishing it. It helps keep you from rushing past yourself, it helps you focus, it keeps you on your toes — and it also keeps the author on xyr toes, seeing visible evidence of the reviewer's edit reminding them to keep striving to do better. --Pi zero (talk) 07:08, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Standards needed for translations

Please see the remarks at Talk:English_actress_Elizabeth_Taylor_dies_at_age_79#Are_the_Spanish_sources_really_necessary.3F There are serious problems with one author using his Spanish translation of an article on an English actress. Usually (on other sites), a translation should be checked by two people. Also, you asked a reviewer who is not fluent in Spanish to review/publish the article. How is he supposed to fact check the sources? This is essentially one man's translation of an unknown author's article with no oversight.

Besides, why use a Spanish translation for an article on an English actress. The readers (remember them) are primarily English-speaking on this site, and will be unable to read the sources for themselves. The sources are for the readers too, as I am sure you know.

Who is the author of the translated article anyway? You?

I find the publication of this article disturbing and not a credit to wikinews IMO. The many grammatical errors found by reviewers show the original translation was poor. And as Gopher6 points out in the link above, words have culturally based meanings that don't translate easily. I don't have trust in you.

The article on a influential actress is very superficial. It doesn't even mention that she was known for her beauty but rather her "personality" only. Frustrated, I resorted to the web and found many fascinating articles on Elizabeth Taylor. IMO, this one should never have been published. English sources on an English actress are much more appropriate. Use of English sources would have resulted in a much more interesting and complete article. Maybe one Spanish article (to offer a different persecutive) may have been useful. I hope you will consider these suggestions. Regards, Mattisse (talk) 09:41, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

P.S. A more interesting last wish (rather than the charity donations which is standard) is that her funeral start 15 minutes late. Mattisse (talk) 10:18, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Please note, I did not write the article nor translated it. I only fixed the translation. I don't see the problem, the article was reviewed by me, while I was copyediting the rubbish translation. Nascar only published it at my request. If Elizabeth Taylor is English, Russian, Chinese, Mapuche, I don't care, the article was reviewed with those sources, not others. And if it misses things, you should have pointed them out or {{fixed}} in less than 24 hours after its publication, now it is too late and your comments are relatively moot to me. Diego Grez return fire 21:13, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

For the sake of the professionalism of wikinews, please consider Gopher65's comments in your future work, since you brush off my opinion. I gather from what Gopher65 says, you do this translation stuff often, to the burden of reviewers (an hour and a half to reveiw your article versus 15 minutes for one by someone else). And the article will have the defects that he points out. Your response is: "And if it misses things, you should have pointed them out or {{fixed}} in less than 24 hours after its publication." How much time do you expect the project to spend on your articles? Regards, Mattisse (talk) 21:28, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yet again, Matisse, I did not translate that article, I only fixed the rubbish translation. I don't do translation stuff very often, I do create articles that are relevant to my country (Spanish-speaking), and I try to help the reviewers through IRC (I ask them to review them by there), if they've got any question about the content (maybe stupid transliterations?). And for the last part, I did not specifically refer to "any of my articles", but others'. After all the wiki is editable by anyone, you should know better. Cheers, --Diego Grez return fire 21:38, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please read for the sake of wikinews

{copied from link above since you apparently did not read it: comments by Gopher65)

Here's my understanding of policy on this matter: English sources are much preferred both from the point of view of a reviewer and as a reader. Use of English sources should take precedence over non-English sources. When no English sources are available (as happens occasionally), it is permissible to use non-English sources. Here's the reasoning behind that:
Reader: The reader may want to read further the subject of the article, or they may want to check up on us. Either way, that's easier with English sources than non-English sources. (Note that we prefer to direct them to internal Wikinews stories when possible, and after that to other WMF sites (like Wikipedia or Wiktionary). External sources are the last place we want our readers to go, after they have exhausted all that we and our sister sites have to offer.)
Reviewer: Reviewers want to review perfect articles. That makes the reviewer's job easier. The easier their job is, the longer it takes each individual reviewer to "burn out", and the faster any given article will get reviewed. Every little thing that makes the review harder to do slows the process, and burns through the available time and effort that each reviewer has to offer.
Example: it takes me 15 minutes or so to factcheck, copycheck, format, and categorize (etc) an article written by someone like C628. One of Deigo's Spanish-sourced articles usually takes me closer to an hour and a half. That's a big block of time to devote to reviewing a single article. In many cases it takes longer to review a non-English sourced article than it does to write it. Part of it is just doing the basic fact/copycheck, but almost as big a time sink is trying to fix odd translations that don't quite sit well with native English speakers, or trying to figure out what the cultural translation of a quote would be.
A surprising percentage of the things that we say are culturally based. The classic example from Star Trek: TNG is saying "Romeo and Juliet" to an alien and a human. The words themselves are meaningless (they're just proper nouns (and an article if you're going to be nitpicky about it. Eeesh! You people. :P)), but the cultural meaning is significant. To the alien it means nothing, to the human it conjures up a vague feeling of romanticism, or maybe young love (although I'd contend that the play was actually about the failure of the families of the titular characters to properly deal with the infatuation, rather than being a story that has anything to do with love, or even with the impropriety of the main character's actions). The same lack of cultural knowledge that prevents an alien from understanding the words "Romeo and Juliet" followed by a wink and a nudge, also prevents people who speak different languages from understanding each other's cultural phrases. Back to reviewing, it's not Deigo's fault that his articles are hard to review; weirdness and timesickage are just in the nature of translating. Gopher65talk 01:19, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Did you read Gopher65's comments. They largely have to do with using foreign language sources (in this case Spanish) for articles on English subjects. You seem to have missed the point. I have put some of his comments in bold, hoping they will be read. Mattisse (talk) 21:53, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

A thought

We all strive to improve, right? I notice an hour or two back you wrote an edit summary starting "OK, you're officially being stupid". It's easy to write that sort of thing casually, but if it isn't taken that way it can be somewhat hurtful. You might consider how you could have written an edit summary conveying the information about what to do without using the word "stupid". Which should be better for morale all around. --Pi zero (talk) 01:33, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Civility warning

Calling someone 'stupid' is never a good thing: most 'stupidity' is subjective, arising out of a mixture of misunderstanding and hot-headedness. This sort of thing is especially common on the Internet, where it is easy to misconstrue people's comments — if it helps, assume that nobody knows anything unless you tell them. Explain the parts that are not understood, and take the time to make them understand. As for the warning: one, two, three. You know the drill. — μ 14:32, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Questions

Do you object to my questions in "Requestions for permissions"? [9]

Perhaps it is not necessary for an admin at wikinews to have a fundamental understanding of article publishing. Is that true? If it is not necessary for an admin to understand the principles of reviewing (source checking, accuracy, avoiding misquoting, avoiding promotion of a product, NPOV etc.) then I will withdraw my question. Is that the case? Please let me know since you have an interest in the matter. I am more than willing to withdraw my question if it offends you. Thanks, Mattisse (talk) 23:26, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, Matisse! :) I did not even read the questions nor who asked them, I just saw there was a long trace of text and wrote that, I'm sorry if you felt offended by that. Diego Grez return fire 23:32, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I felt that I must be doing something wrong, something against the rules here. Just asking, as it is confusing to me what is condoned here and what is not ok. Usually it is ok to ask questions, but I guess here it is unusual. I will be more careful in the future. Thanks, Mattisse (talk) 23:42, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have entered an "oppose" as I see how quickly these nominations are closed and I fear this one will be also without my question being answered. If the nominee will address the question in a satisfactory manner, rather than avoiding it, thereby showing that she is aware of the problem, I am willing to withdraw the oppose. Or, if you say that it is not necessary for an admin to be aware of bias, fact checking and NPOV I will withdraw the oppose. Mattisse (talk) 01:01, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Matisse, as far as I know the questions are optional, and he is free to not respond you, but if you have pointed a rather important issue as a question, they should respond it IMO (yet again I reiterate I haven't read the questions). Admins should be careful with potential bias in the articles they review, correctly fact-check and check for NPOV; that's something inherited from the reviewer right. Sorry, I wouldn't say 'misued'. I was sure it means 'unused', so I'm sorry for the confusion.
It would be really better if you could restart it... But if you don't plan to use it anymore, it would be better to remove bot statuts (which can be restored if the bot is still used, ofc). If it's the case, just say explicitly that it is not needed anymore, it would make stewards life easier ;)

The drama was already here, and it doesn't seem to be anyway to stop it. These two users were deliberately creating drama, the blocks are intended to prevent them. I've seen one user has announced their retirement from the project, that's okay, it's their decision, while the other has said "it may be deemed inappropriate" to block because of something that happened in the Comments namespace: let me tell you, the Comments namespace is still in the Wikinews wiki, it isn't in outer space and there are policies to follow. I'm not just going to call you all "fucking assraped faggots" there because I am almost sure nobody will block me there; no, it simply doesn't work out that way. Kthxbai, too. アンパロ Io ti odio! 03:37, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
First: please post to WN:AAA#Anything else stating what you did and why. You should do that when taking an admin action that is potentially controversial in an out-of-the-ordinary way. I would rather you posted there, rather than leaving it to someone else; if started by someone else (me, say) it would seem like a complaint, whereas from you it would be merely an acknowledgement that the action wasn't altogether routine. There definitely should be a thread there about it; at the very least, it leaves a record in a standard place where people can find it.
Some thoughts on the action.
  • There aren't policies; that's kind of the point. Written policy on Wikinews is often behind the curve, and comments namespace operates under a different set of rules.
  • If users were discussing the article, they could call each other fucking assraped faggots and expect to be quite safe in doing so.
  • They weren't discussing the article or anything remotely related to it anymore, and imho that's the only reason you're not unequivocally wrong to have blocked them.
  • Even if the block itself is supported, 24 hours might have been overdoing it. Blocking potentially productive Wikinewsies is hard on the project, because articles can suffer a lot, perhaps fatally, from say 24 hours of neglect. That's one of the reasons I dislike blocks for squabbles between potentially productively Wikinewsies.
--Pi zero (talk) 04:39, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is one thing simple as that, if a user is a legitimate contributor to Wikinews then blocking them is not a wise thing to decide. Raising a conversation at their talk page is often a more successful and peaceful thing to d first. Please try to educate the participants in a short, welcoming manner if you can, or just try to stay out of "the drama". Thanks, Gryllida (% talk) 07:39, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Unblocks performed

Please note that your blocks against Brian McNeil and Matisse have been unilaterally removed by myself. It is not appropriate to block users for making comments in the Comments namespace, unless there are very clear cut circumstances, such as libel, etc. Please be more careful about how you use blocks in the future. BarkingFish (talk) 08:50, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Although I do not dispute the removal (I did not dispute the blocks either, though I was thinking of cutting them by 12hrs either before or after giving Diego a chance to start a thread on WN:AAA, as xe should have done right after blocking), note that in general it is possible that after warning the parties not to abuse the comments namespace, blocks would become an appropriate sanction. Genuine disruption did, after all, result from this incident: BRS and Crazynomad were having a pleasant trollish discussion related to the article when their discussion was disrupted by this. --Pi zero (talk) 12:31, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Both parties have been in a long-time worthless and stupid discussion about nonsense, you know it. Does that even deserve a warning? One of them is a bureaucrat, they should know things better. But since BarkingFish has unilaterally removed the blocks without asking me, the whole AAA drama discussion I should have started, is now complete moot. Thank you! </sarcasm> アンパロ Io ti odio! 22:12, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Spanish news

Maybe you could ask a few people in your family/town/university to join Wikinews to help with the work on Spanish articles? Whether a period at the end of a quote goes inside the quotation mark ("That's what she said.") or outside the quotation mark (That's what she said".) depends on which side of the Atlantic you're on. Both are correct. Gopher65talk 17:39, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

It's even worse than that. There are at least three different conventions floating around. (I used to debate quotation punctuation over at WP:MOS talk, back before I got disillusioned with the atmosphere over there.) --Pi zero (talk) 18:40, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I've blown the occasional fuse on Wikipedia about various bits of punctuation and grammar as well, heh. The real problem is that English doesn't have a standardized set of grammatical and spelling rules, but most people not only think that it does, they think that the conventions *they* grew up with are the correct ones, and everyone else is just being stupid.
At some point the language will probably either have to adhere to a single standard, or simply drop standardization attempts altogether and let people spell and punctuated stuff the way they want to... which is how it use to be, until recently. Whichever path people choose, we'd at least be able to stop beating our heads against our desks in frustration. ;) Gopher65talk 21:54, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
As far as quotes go, I work on the principle that if the punctuation is part of the quote - such as quoting a full sentence - put it inside the quote marks. Rather that than people put all the stops awry. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:14, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agree with this practice. If the punctuation is inside the quotation marks, it is part of the quotation. e.g. If the quotation ends in a full stop, then the period is included within the quotes. Mattisse (talk) 23:31, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
That's what WP:MOS has recommended for many years, and what I spent much time and effort defending there. "[P]lace all punctuation marks inside the quotation marks if they are part of the quoted material and outside if they are not." --Pi zero (talk) 01:17, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Singer Amy Winehouse dead at age 27

This would have been a really good moment to apply the "find a copyedit before publishing" rule. The article was uncategorized, which would have made for a dead-easy simple copyedit, and made a big difference in the impression left by the edit history. As is, the edit history really looks bad — published with no copyedits two minutes after the author's last substantive addition. As I say, it would have been a really good moment for an easy copyedit. --Pi zero (talk) 17:41, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I did not see it had no categories, I just quick checked the facts and published the article. I'm sorry about that. アンパロ Io ti odio! 17:42, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
For urgent news, I think the important thing is to get it out the door quickly and then fix it up post-publication. Who cares about the "impression left by the edit history"? The readers don't. If a few readers arrive and it doesn't have categories: who cares? We can fix not having categories. We can't fix the story not being published. —Tom Morris (talk) 17:45, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
The categories themselves aren't the issue. The appearance I'm talking about is that the edit history made it look like the review was a rubber stamp, and that appearance is bad for both project reputation and project morale. The only reason I mentioned the categories is that, because making some copyedit before publication would have been so valuable in this case, the categories would have been an easy way to provide such a copyedit.
The rule of thumb I'm referring to is the one at the top of here. --Pi zero (talk) 18:01, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey Diego Grez, how's it going? I've been working with ay.wikipedia for a while and wanted to get them to hang out on IRC. I noticed you have Founder rights on #wikipedia-ay and I wanted to know if you'd be willing to give me Founder flag, so I can manage user rights and other administrative stuff. I plan on granting some of them op status and flag founder in the long run. Regards, --Alhen (talk) 22:03, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Erm, sure, I suppose. アンパロ Io ti odio! 22:04, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fire article

Needs detailed OR notes, and a bit of neutrality tweaking. And I've got very very limited availability. All on the article talk. --Pi zero (talk) 13:48, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Truthfully, I wasn't entirely comfortable with my second review of the article, after the fact. You did of course upgrade the notes considerably, but as you say, you should have done better. Indeed, you surely can do better, even if you are in a hurry, as long as you realize ahead of time that you need to jot down better notes. Which you now do realize, I hope.
I was uncomfortable enough that I consulted with BRS about it, who pointed out the specific difficulty with the meaning of "unidentified", leading me to submit the change to the article that I did.
I note your post to foundation-l wikinews-l. Unfortunate, that. The discussion of the fork there was very nearly 100% anti-Wikinews trolling —most responses there to my own one post, for example, demonstrated extraordinary lack of reading comprehension (no way to tell for sure if they really were unable to read and understand what I wrote, or were deliberately misunderstanding)— and it was rather pleasant when the thread finally petered out.
[Please note, I am an idiot, not even noticing your post was to wikinews-l rather than foundation-l. My being an idiot is nothing new, of course. :-) ]
A general thought, which I've been developing for some time and am now struggling to articulate. The value of Wikinews lies in its high standards — in no particular order,
  • helping people to learn to self-distinguish between what facts they know reliably, what they suspect, and what is their opinion (including the importance of where information comes from — plus other stuff, of course, but those are the most profound, I think, skills that have immense value in life generally);
  • presenting material to a reliably high standard; and
  • giving people the opportunity to disseminate their work in a venue that certifies it's up to that standard.
People being anyone with internet access, of course. :-) --Pi zero (talk) 13:30, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
(Sorry for the late response) Yep, Wikinews lies in its high standards, it's a good thing, I have nothing to say. I'm sure we all understand volunteers aren't paid at all and obviously won't produce reviews nor articles in a large scale. However, as I pointed out in the e-mail WN needs a "reform" re. the review process, and it needs it now, but I don't know how. "Relaxing" the process wouldn't solve the problem, auto-publishing wouldn't either. In one way we should fix this, otherwise WN will be losing potential contributors and users; note I'm not saying they'll migrate to OG, they'll probably won't bother to edit Wikimedia at all anymore. Software tools that help significantly with the mechanics of review would be good.
  • I used to think multi-reviewer collaboration was a likely candidate, but that's clearly hard to do, it was never clear how well it would really work after all the trouble to make it happen, and at the moment it might not help much anyway with the low number of active reviewers.
  • A task that seems to me to take up an awful lot of reviewer time and effort is matching sections of a Wikinews article against the corresponding sections of the sources. But for a tool like that to really work, it might have to avoid pattern-matching entirely — simple pattern-matching is apt to miss things, and advanced pattern-matching in this case seems scarcely short of full natural-language understanding. And the tool would have to avoid making one or another type of problem harder to see.
It really feels like the right tools could be a game-changer. The wrong tools, of course, could really mess things up. But if something as "simple" as the {{w}} template can make as big a difference as it does —and it's pretty much eradicated what used to be a noticeable source of tedium and mistakes— there ought to be some other well-chosen simple tools that would make a big difference. The keyword being chosen: the design of {{w}} is subtle, only the action is simple. --Pi zero (talk) 01:49, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
