Florida woman addicted to eating furniture edit

Did you read the sources? It's a legitimate story. And certainly not "patent nonsense". fetch·comms 02:38, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi. It does look as if it's real, so I've restored it — though I do think it has newsworthiness "issues". --Pi zero (talk) 02:55, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dates edit

Just as a FYI, the Style guide does not recommend use of st, nd, and so. -Brian McNeil / talk 09:51, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

D'oh. I'm am actually supposed to know that, just didn't see it while reviewing the story. Thanks for the heads up. —Tom Morris (talk) 10:47, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I assume that's in the Sources templates. right? I am not used to writing the date without a st, nd or anything else with it. I'm not American :) I don't say "it's April 1." I say it's April 1st or whenever. Maybe the style guide needs a clean up :D BarkingFish (talk) 10:49, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hold on, why am I posting about this on BarkingFish's page rather than my own? I am utterly confused now. Heh. —Tom Morris (talk) 10:57, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
It's standard practice to keep a conversation in one place, Tom. Don't worry about it, and if only we'd gone for the second option, Brian, life would be so much easier :D I'll remember it for the future though, although I don't entirely like it. BarkingFish (talk) 11:12, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Could you check the sources for article you passed? Sources do not support article? edit

Please see Talk:U.S. budget crisis will cause personal budget crisis for U.S. troops. I can't find mention of "personal budget crisis for U.S. troops" or anything referring to the military. Could you point it out to me? (I used "find" to search for a variety of terms like "military", "personal", "U.s. troops" etc.) Thanks, Mattisse (talk) 23:17, 7 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

breaking news edit

Thanks for your note on my page. Could you explain to me the breaking news thing, as it seems the editor can publish an article with inaccuracies and copyvio. Are the rules different? What constitutes "breaking news"? I can see how an assassination, an unexpected death of a famous person, a catastrophic accident etc. is breaking news, but every shooting or small accident? These sorts of shooting seem quite common these days, so I didn't even think of it as "breaking news"? (Also, I kept checking to see if someone was writing the same article but didn't see it, because the headline kept changing! Mattisse (talk) 22:07, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Certainly, I'll explain it. The term "breaking news" simply covers the fact that a story is ongoing, and information contained in it can change rapidly, as you've seen with the title changes to the story we already had. Breaking news doesn't refer to the actual story itself, it refers to the nature of the event as being in progress or requiring constant updates as information becomes available or clearer. Hope that helps :) BarkingFish (talk) 22:13, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply. But didn't it end up on the Main page before it was reviewed? And doesn't all information become clearer over time? So the "breaking news" just applies to accidents and shootings where the death count may change? Also, why didn't my my merge suggestion on the Collaboration page get moved with all the headline changes? (I thought a merge might help with the copyvio and close paraphrasing.) Mattisse (talk) 23:01, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh, well. I see I got mixed up put merge suggestion on the wrong page. Mattisse (talk) 23:10, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
It didn't go on the main page before it was reviewed. It was moved onto Lead article 4 ([1]) at 14.16UTC, and it was reviewed and published at14.15UTC, so it went to the main page about a minute or less after it was published. BarkingFish (talk) 23:19, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Spoken version edit

I wish you would thank the person who provided the spoken version of Iceland voters reject deal to repay billions to UK, Dutch, as he did a beautiful job and it really adds to the article. I understood my own writing better when listening to him reading it. Shouldn't the reader be given credit somewhere? Mattisse (talk) 01:00, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for those kind comments, Mattisse. I am the reader :) I used to broadcast internet radio several years ago, and developed a "radio voice", which is what you heard there. I'm very pleased you liked it. Thank you again! BarkingFish (talk) 01:10, 11 April 2011 (UTC)\Reply

I am soliciting your input please! edit

I am attempting a Dispute resolution at Wikinews:Dispute resolution/Brian McNeil and Mattisse and I am soliciting your input as to the problem. I urge you to give feedback. Soliciting input is the next step in the Dispute resolution process. Please do! I cannot write articles or copy edit until this is resolved. Regards, Mattisse (talk) 23:58, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry Mattisse, but I can have nothing to do with this at the moment. My capacity to act as an admin or make decisions is under question here at the moment by a user called Amgine, who you've been communicating with already, and I'm not prepared to give any more ammunition to those wishing to get my job stripped from me here. I respectfully decline your request to input to the Dispute Resolution request and politely ask that you don't communicate with me further about this particular subject here or anywhere else. Thanks. BarkingFish (talk) 08:15, 6 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hey, BarkingFish, I apologize for emailing you inappropriately. I didn't realize that you were in an administrative capacity and I that my requesting advice from you would cause you trouble. I hope you forgive me. I was really just thinking of you as a friend. (You work in prisons, right?) Truly, I am not intentionally causing trouble, but rather I don't know how to get information on this site. Blood Red Sandman has agreed to mentor me and Cirt has been extremely helpful in clarifying the issues. I believe I have learned from all this and will avoid future incidents. Best wishes to you. TwinkleToes1993 edit

Can you elaborate on this one please at WN:RFCU? I could not find an account by this name, perhaps it is a misspelling? -- Cirt (talk) 08:16, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm attempting to sort this - it was mentioned by Brian McNeil in #wikinews right after I picked up the other two in the User creation log - I asked him to clarify where he'd seen it, but I think he'd gotten disconnected. I will ask him again tonight when he's online to verify where he saw that account. BarkingFish (talk) 11:31, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'm not un-hip, I spotted two, you mentioned a third and I thought it was one of the socks of the other two, which is why I filed on all three :) BarkingFish (talk) 14:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
<chuckles> Nonetheless, I seem to recall an actual third possible being discussed... I don't actually think that one contained the 1993 string, now I think on it. So... What was the third account? Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 16:30, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
There was no 3rd account in a CU check. -- Cirt (talk) 17:36, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yelena Bonner edit

Hi, I was trying to write this up so I put my sources in your article. Hope you don't mind. There is supposed to be a write up on the Harvard University website, but I couldn't find it. Regards, Mattisse (talk) 20:33, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for adding the extra sources, Mattisse. I got the initial information while I was watching NRK's evening news, so I decided to pull it up on their website and start a write up. If you want to contribute, you're welcome to do so as I'm handling some writer's block at the moment, and finding it difficult to work on the story. BarkingFish (talk) 20:49, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
ok, actually I started a story, but there is a lot of information and I became bogged down in trying to figure out what to focus on. She has a very interesting personal history of her own, family purged by Stalin etc., then the story of how she smuggled her husband's writing out of Siberia, was caught and confined to Siberia also. And she did all sorts of things in her own right, besides her relationship with nuclear bomb physicist and Nobel Peace laureate Andrei Sakharov. She was war time nurse, received decorations, became a physician, and a human rights activist, founded an organizatio. etc. etc. !!! Mattisse (talk) 21:02, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Wikinews is not paper; an obit can be longer than what a conventional newspaper might carry. The snag is avoiding overloading with sources. --Brian McNeil / talk 00:23, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I went ahead ... edit

But please feel free to modify Soviet human rights activist Yelena Bonner dies aged 88. I tried to focus on her rather than her husband. Hope it's ok with you.

Also, would it be ok if I sent you an email? About working in prisons and felons (especially murderers) and its effects on persons? OK if you don't want me to. Mattisse (talk) 22:12, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Published work edit

It's true. No work has ever appeared on Wikinews. But i can produce the assignments carried out for other print publications on the topis stated in request.

I'm sorry, Pramod - the idea is that if you're applying for a position with Wikinews, we need to see some work carried out and published on Wikinews. Work you've done for other publications may be useful as supporting evidence, but you need to do some work for us and get it published before we're even likely to consider you for an Accreditation. BarkingFish (talk) 14:17, 24 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pramod edit

Can you suggest me by what time i should start posting news stuff on wikinews? I can start it righaway provided i get go ahead from the team. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pramod.bhardwaj (talkcontribs)

OK Pramod, I think you've got the wrong impression of Wikinews. You don't need to have an accreditation to write and publish work here. The accreditation is an aid to covering news stories, arranging interviews, etc - it's not a requirement for you to actually work here :) You can start writing stories right this very minute, just remember to take a look at our writing guidelines and our Manual of Style - and remember, if you get stuck doing anything, contact one of the people listed at this page and we'll do our level best to help you sort yourself out! BarkingFish (talk) 12:50, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pramod edit

How long does it take for a reporter to get accreditation. Is there any specific quantity of news item needed to be published or a stint is sufficient? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pramod.bhardwaj (talkcontribs)

Generally, if you're putting in a request for accreditation, we usually like to see a few good pieces of work, there's no specific number, but ideally before you apply you should have a good working knowledge of how we do things here, how to source and write your stories, and we ideally say to give it probably at least 6 to 8 weeks of good solid work so we can see how you perform. Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate? edit

We've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. It would be a really great time for you, as a Wikinews accredited reporter, to do some original reporting and conduct interviews. People should be around to interview to prevent a backlog, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. If you are interested in signing up, please do so on Wikinews:Writing contest 2013/entrants. There is at least one prize on offer for the winner along with the opportunity to earn some barn stars as a way of thanking you for your participation. :D --LauraHale (talk) 10:19, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
