Welcome

edit

Juliancolton, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Cirt - (talk) 17:59, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Seahen's request for editor status

edit

Hi Juliancolton! Regarding the discussion on Seahen's request for editor status, do you think that putting myself up for reconfirmation/recall would resolve the issues brought up? Would such an action even be necessary? Thanks! Benny the mascot (talk) 05:22, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but I'm not sure why that would be necessary. –Juliancolton | Talk 05:48, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I might be getting paranoid, but when Dendodge said, "yours should also have been re-opened, in my opinion," I just felt that I have to. Benny the mascot (talk) 12:24, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I didn't mean you should re-run (I would have supported in the first place if I'd got round to it), but that—for the sake of consistency—single vote requests should be re-opened in the future. Unless you do something terribly wrong, I have no problem with you having the rights, but—as Seahen's proved—this is not always the case. Dendodge T\C 15:41, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

A little help, if you have time

edit

Hi Julian, I've just taken an excursion onto here from Wikipedia- it's certainly a lot quieter on here! I don't know if you've seen me around but I don't think we've formally "met". I wonder if you could help me out a little? I've just created this but, embarrassingly, there's a typo in the title. How do I move it to a "typo-free" title and how can I get a few more eyes on it? Any help you could extend would be greatly appreciate. Regards, HJMitchell You rang? 14:25, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

(sorry for butting in here, just noticed this in the recent changes and thought I'd try to help) We use the Vector skin for our default, so a couple of key buttons are arranged differently from WP's Monobook. To move a page, go to the bar at the top of the page (where it says Discussion, Edit, etc.) and move your cursor over the arrow, select "Rename" and that should get you to the move page dialogue. also note your account has to be autoconfirmed. Hope this helps, cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 15:16, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Climate contrarians in Copenhagen

edit

Please join the discussion, if you can do it attentively, if you have some free 30 minutes?

I'm just afraid that this novice user Wikiwide, the author of the article, being probably a scientist (you just look at the first version of this article), has a very little understanding of what Wikinews is. And probably has lots of other work to do, is not interested, etc. Even the topic of climate contrarians near UNCCC sounds scientific, doesn't it? I think that if you revive this article, it will be very good

  • for Wikinews,
  • for this user, and
  • for the environment
    • (as some of the "skeptics" or
    • just common diesel car drivers can find this article realistic)

Please be informed that only an experienced Wikinews user can manage with such significant and responsible task. Q/0/k 04:14, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Today's quiz

edit

Hi Julian, due to an unfortunate error in this week's quiz one of the answers was wrong. Just a heads-up, please take a look at Wikinews talk:World News Quiz and adjust your score if necessary. (This might account for the fact that people are getting unusually low scores today.) Sorry. Tempodivalse [talk] 03:16, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your support for my RFA

edit

I would like to thank you for supporting my successful RFA and for your confidence in me. I look forward to serving further the English Wikinews community in this new capacity. I shall take the new tasks required of an administrator on board step by step and will make the utmost effort to fulfil the role to the best of my abilities. I noticed ...

edit

I noticed you Quick-adding category "Julian Colton (Wikinewsie)" to a story. I have not seen this before. Are you adding this category because you contributed to the article? Is this common practice? I haven't been as active lately as I once was, so I appreciate your response. --SVTCobra 01:57, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

This archived water cooler thread from a few weeks ago might tell you what you want to know. Nice to see you around again, Cobra! :-) Tempodivalse [talk] 02:08, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Tempo. --SVTCobra 03:00, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
What Tempo said. Also, the categories are hidden, so they don't have an effect on the articles themselves. –Juliancolton | Talk 03:30, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews writing contest reminder

edit
To keyboards!!

Points to remember

The competition page is here. Remember, you'll need to move from the newcomers to experienced section as the competition progresses.

Everyone who's new to Wikinews remind yourselves of the article guide and style guide. And, use the Enter an article tab in this template to correctly start your competition articles.

Getting Help

Possibly the fastest way to get help is to look for the regulars in the #wikinews IRC channel on Freenode. See this page for more details. Remember, many people will lurk, connected long-term, but not regularly checking for messages. Please be patient when looking for answers to queries, it can be annoying to see someone ask a question but leave before you notice it.

The usual places to look
Start here for competition-ready templates

Use this form to create a competition-ready article. Be sure to check the Main page and Newsroom to see you're not creating a duplicate. Please also add your article and point score to the log so that your score can be counted.

Good luck!

Background on user page

edit

I really liked the idea of a background image on your page. I hope you don't mind, but can you please help me with the background image that I'm trying to put on my user page? The principle is exactly the same as your user page, although, instead of userboxes, I have written some text. I would like you to help me by spreading the text evenly across the whole image if you can. It would also be nice if you could get rid of that whitespace in the box underneath the picture. Please help me if you can. Thanks, Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 18:54, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

What's wrong with a Template:Hurricane Infobox‎? That box is only useful for a year. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 20:06, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

They've been used for a while: Template:Hurricane 2009 Infobox, Template:Hurricane 2008 Infobox, etc. –Juliancolton | Talk 23:41, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm.... Would make sense to merge them to me, but that's something for the water cooler. Thanx for explaining. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 23:43, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

RE: FAC

edit

Heya, you put up Wikinews_interviews_Dr._Phil_Klotzbach_on_upcoming_hurricane_season as a Featured Article Candidate but all candidates have to be archived before it can go to the vote. Seems a bit fussy but it makes sense. I removed the vote from the page. --James Pain (talk) 16:56, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I thought we never implemented that rule? Thanks for the heads-up, though. –Juliancolton | Talk 23:12, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I thought so too but the rule is still at the top of the page and noone's questioned it...plus (deploy excuse) I've just come back from a break. I feel so picky now but a rule is a rule and it makes sense. I don't dis-like it to the extent to bring it up as a topic of discussion but anyway, sorry. --James Pain (talk) 23:19, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I see that now. Oh well, I'll just re-add it in a few days if that's acceptable. Cheers, –Juliancolton | Talk 02:26, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.

Can you please unprotect this ridiculous article?--Afghan King (talk) 21:04, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

If an archived article has a problem, we can issue a {{correction}}. Under no circumstances would we unprotect an article in the archives; we do not rewrite the historical record at en.wn. --Pi zero (talk) 22:33, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate?

edit

We've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. It would be a really great time for you, as a Wikinews accredited reporter, to do some original reporting and conduct interviews. People should be around to interview to prevent a backlog, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. If you are interested in signing up, please do so on Wikinews:Writing contest 2013/entrants. There is at least one prize on offer for the winner along with the opportunity to earn some barn stars as a way of thanking you for your participation. :D --LauraHale (talk) 10:18, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Per the proposed inactive policy, yopur account has been nominated to have its privileges reduced. --

Being bothered by User:Pi zero

edit

He is bothering me with rubbish each edit. He is never contributing. He deletes articles comments sites here, although the article is existing. Articles under development are clean up articles. I might not write about RB Leipzig. My started articles have interest and he says that other archived articles are which from amateur clubs, university clubs or something else. He wants to rename my name here and is not rename me. My articles are written after the style such as about other proven football match reports. He is psychic unable to name reasons. Please remove him from the board! He neither productive nor socially competent or educated, for a globally representative on public free sites. --Nikebrand (talk) 21:46, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
