bot request edit

Hi, gry. In future, would you be able to create a bot which archives the sources and external links?
•–• 16:01, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Maybe we could use w:User:InternetArchiveBot which does the same task and runs on more than one wiki. It is written in PHP.

The Irate Communist, thank you for signing up! Just confirming that you are interested in notifications of when an article becomes marked as 'developing' (this is the earliest stage of article development), for any topic, to be delivered on-wiki. Is this correct? Gryllida (talk) 19:20, 15 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Barnstar edit

I, Pi zero, hereby award Gryllida this barnstar for original reporting in 2020.

Thank you, Pi zero. It has been fun to work together with you, co-authors, reviewers, and people who made minor fixes. Also, with those who read, without any way to know who they are. Happy New Year! Look forward to the next years writing together. --Gryllida (talk) 20:57, 1 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bureaucratship edit

Hi. I've promoted you to Bureaucrat. Had to look back to my own promotion in 2013 to see what sort of notice had been been given to me on that occasion. There doesn't seem to be any tradition for crats similar to the mop-and-bucket for admins, tho. So: congratulations. :-)  --Pi zero (talk) 14:47, 22 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Pi zero. Appreciate the nomination, and the notification. (I also was, and am, available on live chat -- in addition to the wiki -- for assistance and discussions.) Gryllida (talk) 00:18, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Can you clarify a bit about this Welcome a bit?--Bddpaux (talk) 21:47, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Bddpaux, it sends you email notifications about new article submissions - either to the 'develop' or 'review' or 'published' queues. You can choose a set of categories (eg 'Australia' or 'Politics') to limit the tracking only to these categories and not to all of them. Gryllida (talk) 21:51, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Userspace drafts edit

Hello. I’ve created a list of draft articles in userspace. Among them are these ones in your userspace. I don’t want to tag them for deletion or anything until you’ve had a look:

There’s no urgency but it’s just something that has been on my to-do list for years and I figured I might as well get the list going. Cheers. --Green Giant (talk) 00:37, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Green Giant. They're ok to go, as I have saved a local copy. Would you like me to delete them, or you would prefer to do it? Please let me know. Gryllida (talk) 02:10, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Okie doke. I’ll delete them if you wish, because I’ll be doing a batch deletion nomination for some others soon. --Green Giant (talk) 13:05, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

So, thanks for the vote. Now what?--Bddpaux (talk) 11:42, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Helo, Bddpaux. Is there some time, or number of votes, after which the request can be closed? Gryllida (talk) 02:55, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
  Comment Looking at the older discussions at WN:Requests for permissions/Bureaucrat, the general length seems to have been about two weeks.
* Bawolff - 13 days
* BRS - 7 days
* Brian NZ - 9 days
* Chiacomo - 14 days
* Cspurrier - 7 days
* IlyaHaykinson - 4 days
* Pi zero - 18 days
* ShakataGaNai - 9 days
* Skenmy - 8 days
* Tempodivalse - 32 days
* TUFKAAP - 8 days
I think it is fair to say all the bureaucrat votes have either reached 14 days or been long past that line. It would be a good idea to set a time limit for future nominations. Also I think it’s time to close Cspurrier's removal vote. --Green Giant (talk) 01:47, 30 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi, thanks for the check. For Cspurrier - done. Will return online in a short bit to continue. Gryllida (talk) 02:03, 30 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yep....it's been a while now. I think action is due. Historically, the adding of bits has been all over the map in terms of times. We should (soon, with some kind of consensus, of course) look at time limits or minimum times or something of that ilk. I recently closed an RfP that'd bubbled for over a year. Seems a wee bit silly to me.--Bddpaux (talk) 02:37, 30 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
I’ve cobbled together some suggestions on these issues at Wikinews talk:Requests for permissions. --Green Giant (talk) 03:01, 30 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Bddpaux: The additional rights are listed at Special:UserGroupRights. The main page you would use would be to change local rights at Special:UserRights. Enter the name of the user you want to change rights for. Tick or untick the relevant tick boxes, write the reason, and save. Then close the discussion and inform the user on their talk page. --Green Giant (talk) 20:01, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Temporary change to article length edit

Hello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from February 1 to April 30 to encourage more articles to be published per the outcome of a current proposal. The minimum requirements for article length will be one paragraph of at least a hundred words. At the end of the trial the requirements will return to normal (3 paragraphs etc) and there will be an evaluation discussion about the trial. Happy reviewing! Hello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from July 4 to October 4 to enable more articles to be reviewed per the outcome of a current proposal. One permission removal request to review edit

Since you're one of bureaucrats, I would like you to review the following: Wikinews:Requests for permissions/Removal/Blood Red Sandman. George Ho (talk) 04:48, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi George Ho and Bddpaux
I had sent an email to BRS some time early December after the first message here, via Special:EmailUser, and got no response. Commented on the vote/discussion thing.
Regards, Gryllida (talk) 20:50, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps we could come together and create a WhatsApp Jami or Tox group for all people who have some sort of privileges at Wikinews (doesn't matter which - reviewer, sysop, autoconfirmed etc)? That'd be useful in the case everyone involved actually commits to installing the instant messaging app on all their devices, and enabling notifications.
(I'm not sure how that'd be better than email, or wiki messages. Perhaps wiki messages do not generate a notification to people who do not log in to the site. I log in about once a week for example, as my Firefox is in Private Browsing by default. There was some time when it wasn't, but then I wouldn't go to the wiki site every day, as I had other things to do. But that -- 'it does not show notifications' -- is true about Jami and Tox as well; the only difference being that they have a tray icon and start on startup and auto-login, which the wiki doesn't. Hm.)
Is there a way to have a tray icon for the wiki on desktop, or an {Android, iOS, Maemo, Sailfish} app, that logs into the wiki automatically and shows a counter, and generates a notification, each time there is a new notification in Special:Notifications on any of the sister wikis? Help regarding spam flag edit

Dear Mr/Ms Administrator;

I have been trying to post a message in the Water cooler but it keeps preventing me from doing so as it would flag it as a spam. Please could you help me post the message there?

This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: cs-spam-simple News gen (talk) 11:22, 4 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I know not why your message triggered the abuse filter. I have, however, posted it and replied at Wikinews:Water cooler/assistance#Contact Address of Wikinews as a News Publisher. SVTCobra 14:41, 4 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Replied at the water cooler to you, News gen. What a fascinating idea. Gryllida (talk) 23:12, 4 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@News gen: the automatically blocked edits contained words / phrases used by spammers / spambots on this wiki in the past. This DOES NOT mean you are a spammer; just that you tried to use similar character strings. I won’t list them but characters such as the AT symbol could be part of a spam email address for example. Permission removal edit

Hi Bddpaux, I see now that you already did it. Apologies for my slow response, and many thanks for closing the deadmin request and actioning it.
For future reference: I would suggest to put link to the deadmin discussion into the summary box when performing the action of removing this user right. Then it may be clearer that the action is backed by the said discussion and consensus, and easier to locate the discussion if needed.
Have a great day. Gryllida (talk) 01:58, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

New Ibot edit

Hello Gryllida, I saw your mention of Ibot on IRC and decided to try it out. I like the idea, and things were working fine...until the "Copy/paste the headline and URL here" part. I pasted this (headline in one message, URL in the next), but Ibot was unresponsive. A second attempt produced the same results. Heavy Water (talk) 00:24, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

lbot does not count the lines or identify which part is an URL or a title, sorry.
lbot responds only to 'next', so you have to manually say it after each step. Gryllida (talk) 04:52, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Note, I will try to fix this in a future release. How would you like it to be implemented? Would you suggest that lbot continues after two lines have been sent assuming one of them is an URL and another is the headline? Or perhaps write «When done please write "next"» reminder about a minute after the previous prompt? Gryllida (talk) 04:54, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ohh, I see. If the instructions included, say, "Put the URL in one line, then the headline in the next" the bot wouldn't have to actually determine which is a URL, and it (should) be foolproof. The reminder could also be helpful (I forgot). Heavy Water (talk) 05:16, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
"PROMPT: At any time, please write 'next' to continue. Now, write 'next'." I think this is what confused me; "at any time" could mean only "Whenever you're ready, please write next on this step". Heavy Water (talk) 05:23, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

AI generated articles edit

Hi. I wanted to let you know the article you recently reviewed was at least partially AI generated. Given the author's name, it may have been ChatGPT. Question about DR and bot edit

Hi!

There is not much action on either Wikinews:Bots#Requests or Wikinews:Deletion_requests#825_sxw-files. Is there any chance you could have a look and decide what to do?

If I'm granted a bot flag it would be nice to know if the sxw-files are to be deleted or not. If they are deleted I will skip them. If they are to be kept I will fix them with my bot.

The background info is now located at Wikinews:Water_cooler/assistance/archives/2023/August.

Thanks a lot --MGA73 (talk) 14:23, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi MGA73 :)
The bot request is marked as successful and the bot has already been granted a bot flag. I'm presuming no further action is required.
What is this SXW thing? Is it another document processing format? Is this format proprietary? Hoping to get more information on this.
Many thanks. Gryllida (talk) 22:18, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
.sxw. Craig Spurrier said at the DR in the early years the Print Ed was written in LibreOffice, and "the open-source tools available for editing PDFs were few and had major limitations. Providing the SXW file was a way to provide an editable source file for it." Heavy Water (talk) 00:01, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Looks like this is not a proprietary format. Perhaps some contributors will find it useful as the print edition is allowed to be edited (please correct me if I'm wrong) while distributing in pdf format effectively makes the content read-only and means it is harder to make a derivative. I would be delighted to have these in docx format maybe these days but see no harm in keeping the old ones around. If this is the case, utilizing the bot to categorize them correctly would be nice. Gryllida (talk) 00:16, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
LibreOffice, for example, currently supports the editing of PDFs. (I should note all of these appear to have been created before LibreOffice was in 2010 — but it's thus obvious Cspurrier meant OpenOffice.) I agree there's no harm done by keeping them. Heavy Water (talk) 01:12, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Gryllida! Yes the bot request need no further action. The SXW are not needed but I fixed most of them so I will not save much time if they are deleted. So if you do not feel comfortable deleting the files you can close the DR as keep. --MGA73 (talk) 13:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Requesting a review or admin action edit

Hello, I am new to Wikinews. I see that you're an administrator who has last contributed in December, I've tried to contact more recent participants since last Wednesday but have not had any luck so far. The issue is that I see Wikinews is time-sensitive, and I would really appreciate for my first article to at least be reviewed before it is marked as stale and deleted. It's here and was submitted on Saturday, though I have been trying to line up a review for it since last Wednesday. Can you please review it – or if not, can you please approve Asheiou's RfP here as an admin so that they can have the opportunity to review it? To be honest with you, I would feel really disappointed if my first article went stale and got deleted due to lack of reviewer activity so I am trying to reach out to as many people as I can, despite the fact that English Wikinews has not published any articles since January 4 of this year. --Habst (talk) 14:36, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
