bot request
editHi, gry. In future, would you be able to create a bot which archives the sources and external links?
•–• 16:01, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe we could use w:User:InternetArchiveBot which does the same task and runs on more than one wiki. It is written in PHP.
•–• 23:22, 30 July 2020 (UTC)- i will check it out Gryllida (talk) 10:27, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Acagastya would such bot be allowed in wikimedia toolforge? External articles are not freely licensed. Gryllida (talk) 22:13, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
Barnstar
editThank you, Pi zero. It has been fun to work together with you, co-authors, reviewers, and people who made minor fixes. Also, with those who read, without any way to know who they are. Happy New Year! Look forward to the next years writing together. --Gryllida (talk) 20:57, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
Bureaucratship
editHi. I've promoted you to Bureaucrat. Had to look back to my own promotion in 2013 to see what sort of notice had been been given to me on that occasion. There doesn't seem to be any tradition for crats similar to the mop-and-bucket for admins, tho. So: congratulations. :-) --Pi zero (talk) 14:47, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, Pi zero. Appreciate the nomination, and the notification. (I also was, and am, available on live chat -- in addition to the wiki -- for assistance and discussions.) Gryllida (talk) 00:18, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

editWell deserved. --Pi zero (talk) 02:29, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

editCan you clarify a bit about this Welcome a bit?--Bddpaux (talk) 21:47, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Bddpaux, it sends you email notifications about new article submissions - either to the 'develop' or 'review' or 'published' queues. You can choose a set of categories (eg 'Australia' or 'Politics') to limit the tracking only to these categories and not to all of them. Gryllida (talk) 21:51, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Bddpaux would you like to sign up? I'm trying to implement this more in wiki software here. Please let me know how this works for you? Gryllida (talk) 22:26, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
I see........
edit...that you've been around recently.....Hi! It'd be great if we had more than 1 'Crat on this project. Your thoughts? There has been some voting at Requests for Permissions.--Bddpaux (talk) 02:25, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Bddpaux! Agreed, and I have voted. I will double check it and the pending backlog soon. Gryllida (talk) 11:02, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- Great! Maybe it's me, but I didn't see your vote anywhere? Do you think we have enough supporting votes to give me (and others) 'Crat privs?--Bddpaux (talk) 14:57, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- Added my votes. (Previously I participated in votes about something else.) Thank you for the heads-up. Gryllida (talk) 01:52, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Okie dokie........
editSo, thanks for the vote. Now what?--Bddpaux (talk) 11:42, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
- Helo, Bddpaux. Is there some time, or number of votes, after which the request can be closed? Gryllida (talk) 02:55, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- Mmmmmmmm: About right now sounds good to me.--Bddpaux (talk) 13:28, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- Ummmmm, or: how about now?--Bddpaux (talk) 01:12, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Comment Looking at the older discussions at WN:Requests for permissions/Bureaucrat, the general length seems to have been about two weeks.
- * Bawolff - 13 days
- * BRS - 7 days
- * Brian NZ - 9 days
- * Chiacomo - 14 days
- * Cspurrier - 7 days
- * IlyaHaykinson - 4 days
- * Pi zero - 18 days
- * ShakataGaNai - 9 days
- * Skenmy - 8 days
- * Tempodivalse - 32 days
- * TUFKAAP - 8 days
- I think it is fair to say all the bureaucrat votes have either reached 14 days or been long past that line. It would be a good idea to set a time limit for future nominations. Also I think it’s time to close Cspurrier's removal vote. --Green Giant (talk) 01:47, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the check. For Cspurrier - done. Will return online in a short bit to continue. Gryllida (talk) 02:03, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Comment Looking at the older discussions at WN:Requests for permissions/Bureaucrat, the general length seems to have been about two weeks.
- Yep....it's been a while now. I think action is due. Historically, the adding of bits has been all over the map in terms of times. We should (soon, with some kind of consensus, of course) look at time limits or minimum times or something of that ilk. I recently closed an RfP that'd bubbled for over a year. Seems a wee bit silly to me.--Bddpaux (talk) 02:37, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- I’ve cobbled together some suggestions on these issues at Wikinews talk:Requests for permissions. --Green Giant (talk) 03:01, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Kewl.....let's give it a few days for reading/thinking/discussing etc. --Bddpaux (talk) 03:02, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
ArbCom 2021
editHi Gryllida. I was wondering if you'd be willing to stand for ArbCom this year? If you don't wish to nominate yourself, I would be happy to nominate you.
•–• 07:51, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, I would be willing to stand for ArbCom this year. Thank you for the offer. Please nominate me. Gryllida (talk) 02:03, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Do we need to re-elect for ArbCom? Existing ArbCom simply expired. Gryllida (talk) 23:05, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
'Crat
editThanks! Can you give me a 50 word tutorial on how the privs work and what my 'routine' duties might look like?--Bddpaux (talk) 14:30, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- You should now be able to grant/revoew admin/crat privs to those who are eligible or have been outed out, @Bddpaux:.
•–• 14:51, 1 August 2021 (UTC)- OK. So there is probably a User List page or something, that gives me the buttons to press in order to make that happen??--Bddpaux (talk) 19:40, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Bddpaux: The additional rights are listed at Special:UserGroupRights. The main page you would use would be to change local rights at Special:UserRights. Enter the name of the user you want to change rights for. Tick or untick the relevant tick boxes, write the reason, and save. Then close the discussion and inform the user on their talk page. --Green Giant (talk) 20:01, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Bddpaux, like Green Giant wrote above, you can modify user's rights at Special:UserRights. (This is usually preceded by a vote.) Please let me know if you have any questions. Gryllida (talk) 22:05, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
editHi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Temporary change to article length
editHello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from February 1 to April 30 to encourage more articles to be published per the outcome of a current proposal. The minimum requirements for article length will be one paragraph of at least a hundred words. At the end of the trial the requirements will return to normal (3 paragraphs etc) and there will be an evaluation discussion about the trial. Happy reviewing! Temporary change to freshness
editHello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from July 4 to October 4 to enable more articles to be reviewed per the outcome of a current proposal. The freshness window is being extended to about five to seven days. At the end of the trial the window will continue to be at 5-7 days while we discuss whether to adopt the change permanently or not. Happy reviewing! [24Cr][talk] 17:36, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
One permission removal request to review
editSince you're one of bureaucrats, I would like you to review the following: Wikinews:Requests for permissions/Removal/Blood Red Sandman. George Ho (talk) 04:48, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- I am giving BRS a few more days to comment, then will take action.--Bddpaux (talk) 17:29, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi George Ho and Bddpaux
- I had sent an email to BRS some time early December after the first message here, via Special:EmailUser, and got no response. Commented on the vote/discussion thing.
- Regards, Gryllida (talk) 20:50, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could come together and create a
WhatsAppJami or Tox group for all people who have some sort of privileges at Wikinews (doesn't matter which - reviewer, sysop, autoconfirmed etc)? That'd be useful in the case everyone involved actually commits to installing the instant messaging app on all their devices, and enabling notifications. - (I'm not sure how that'd be better than email, or wiki messages. Perhaps wiki messages do not generate a notification to people who do not log in to the site. I log in about once a week for example, as my Firefox is in Private Browsing by default. There was some time when it wasn't, but then I wouldn't go to the wiki site every day, as I had other things to do. But that -- 'it does not show notifications' -- is true about Jami and Tox as well; the only difference being that they have a tray icon and start on startup and auto-login, which the wiki doesn't. Hm.)
- Is there a way to have a tray icon for the wiki on desktop, or an {Android, iOS, Maemo, Sailfish} app, that logs into the wiki automatically and shows a counter, and generates a notification, each time there is a new notification in Special:Notifications on any of the sister wikis? Help regarding spam flag
editDear Mr/Ms Administrator;
I have been trying to post a message in the Water cooler but it keeps preventing me from doing so as it would flag it as a spam. Please could you help me post the message there?
This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: cs-spam-simple News gen (talk) 11:22, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- I know not why your message triggered the abuse filter. I have, however, posted it and replied at Wikinews:Water cooler/assistance#Contact Address of Wikinews as a News Publisher. SVTCobra 14:41, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- Some of our widgets/formatting type stuff has been acting up a bit around here.--Bddpaux (talk) 20:12, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- Replied at the water cooler to you, News gen. What a fascinating idea. Gryllida (talk) 23:12, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- @News gen: the automatically blocked edits contained words / phrases used by spammers / spambots on this wiki in the past. This DOES NOT mean you are a spammer; just that you tried to use similar character strings. I won’t list them but characters such as the AT symbol could be part of a spam email address for example. Permission removal
editSo, to remove BRS's Admin bit, which buttons should I press?--Bddpaux (talk) 22:09, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Bddpaux, I see now that you already did it. Apologies for my slow response, and many thanks for closing the deadmin request and actioning it.
- For future reference: I would suggest to put link to the deadmin discussion into the summary box when performing the action of removing this user right. Then it may be clearer that the action is backed by the said discussion and consensus, and easier to locate the discussion if needed.
- Have a great day. Gryllida (talk) 01:58, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
Hello. We've created Wikinews:Writing contest 2023, which will start on February 1 and end on May 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 and 2013 contests. As a reviewer who has recently been inactive, it would be a great time for you to rejoin. If you are interested in signing up, please do so at Wikinews:Writing contest 2023#Entrants and create a category for the articles you submit. Heavy Water (talk) 04:05, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

New Ibot
editHello Gryllida, I saw your mention of Ibot on IRC and decided to try it out. I like the idea, and things were working fine...until the "Copy/paste the headline and URL here" part. I pasted this (headline in one message, URL in the next), but Ibot was unresponsive. A second attempt produced the same results. Heavy Water (talk) 00:24, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- lbot does not count the lines or identify which part is an URL or a title, sorry.
- lbot responds only to 'next', so you have to manually say it after each step. Gryllida (talk) 04:52, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Note, I will try to fix this in a future release. How would you like it to be implemented? Would you suggest that lbot continues after two lines have been sent assuming one of them is an URL and another is the headline? Or perhaps write «When done please write "next"» reminder about a minute after the previous prompt? Gryllida (talk) 04:54, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Ohh, I see. If the instructions included, say, "Put the URL in one line, then the headline in the next" the bot wouldn't have to actually determine which is a URL, and it (should) be foolproof. The reminder could also be helpful (I forgot). Heavy Water (talk) 05:16, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- "PROMPT: At any time, please write 'next' to continue. Now, write 'next'." I think this is what confused me; "at any time" could mean only "Whenever you're ready, please write next on this step". Heavy Water (talk) 05:23, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- I'll reword, thanks! Gryllida (talk) 10:34, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

AI generated articles
editHi. I wanted to let you know the article you recently reviewed was at least partially AI generated. Given the author's name, it may have been ChatGPT. I do not know how your own iBot project compares or how it works. I do think it is something we will need to discuss in some forum. Cheers, SVTCobra 06:12, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

De-admin??
editI intend to take steps to de-admin someone (they are OK with it)... but for the life of me, I can't remember the actual steps needed to make that happen. I probably need to start at Wikinews:Administrators. I am uncertain if I have ever taken someone's keys away here before. Can you advise, please?--Bddpaux (talk) 20:39, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Bddpaux, at Special:Contributions/Gryllida, click "user rights management" at the top. That should have tick boxes that can be added or removed, and a reason textbox to note in the log. Gryllida (talk) 04:25, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Question about DR and bot
editHi!
There is not much action on either Wikinews:Bots#Requests or Wikinews:Deletion_requests#825_sxw-files. Is there any chance you could have a look and decide what to do?
If I'm granted a bot flag it would be nice to know if the sxw-files are to be deleted or not. If they are deleted I will skip them. If they are to be kept I will fix them with my bot.
The background info is now located at Wikinews:Water_cooler/assistance/archives/2023/August.
Thanks a lot --MGA73 (talk) 14:23, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi MGA73 :)
- The bot request is marked as successful and the bot has already been granted a bot flag. I'm presuming no further action is required.
- What is this SXW thing? Is it another document processing format? Is this format proprietary? Hoping to get more information on this.
- Many thanks. Gryllida (talk) 22:18, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- .sxw. Craig Spurrier said at the DR in the early years the Print Ed was written in LibreOffice, and "the open-source tools available for editing PDFs were few and had major limitations. Providing the SXW file was a way to provide an editable source file for it." Heavy Water (talk) 00:01, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Looks like this is not a proprietary format. Perhaps some contributors will find it useful as the print edition is allowed to be edited (please correct me if I'm wrong) while distributing in pdf format effectively makes the content read-only and means it is harder to make a derivative. I would be delighted to have these in docx format maybe these days but see no harm in keeping the old ones around. If this is the case, utilizing the bot to categorize them correctly would be nice. Gryllida (talk) 00:16, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- LibreOffice, for example, currently supports the editing of PDFs. (I should note all of these appear to have been created before LibreOffice was in 2010 — but it's thus obvious Cspurrier meant OpenOffice.) I agree there's no harm done by keeping them. Heavy Water (talk) 01:12, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Gryllida! Yes the bot request need no further action. The SXW are not needed but I fixed most of them so I will not save much time if they are deleted. So if you do not feel comfortable deleting the files you can close the DR as keep. --MGA73 (talk) 13:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Requesting a review or admin action
editHello, I am new to Wikinews. I see that you're an administrator who has last contributed in December, I've tried to contact more recent participants since last Wednesday but have not had any luck so far. The issue is that I see Wikinews is time-sensitive, and I would really appreciate for my first article to at least be reviewed before it is marked as stale and deleted. It's here and was submitted on Saturday, though I have been trying to line up a review for it since last Wednesday. Can you please review it – or if not, can you please approve Asheiou's RfP here as an admin so that they can have the opportunity to review it? Thank you, --Habst (talk) 16:06, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida, I wanted to ping you on this as I have since WN:GATWICKed the article with a new anchor here: World Athletics Indoor Championships concludes in Glasgow with new world records and significant wins. Would you be available to help? To be honest with you, I would feel really disappointed if my first article went stale and got deleted due to lack of reviewer activity so I am trying to reach out to as many people as I can, despite the fact that English Wikinews has not published any articles since January 4 of this year. --Habst (talk) 14:36, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Habst,
- Sorry for the delay.
- Please ping me on IRC in the future, and stay online there for 12 hours after asking. I am more responsive there than at the wiki.
- Could you please also advise me what languages do you speak and what are your main regions of interest (region and topics) for news?
- Regards, Gryllida (talk) 03:12, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Are you still around @Habst ? Gryllida (talk) 10:37, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Gryllida, I have unfortunately not really had time for newswriting lately, though I am active on enwiki where I write primarily about athletics. Thanks for your offer -- I will keep that in mind when I have the motivation and time to write again. --Habst (talk) 11:56, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Habst I appreciate you getting back to me. I would like to ask you a few questions about how you write articles on the English Wikipedia.
- Do you use visual editor or source editor?
- Does it have a button to 'save and keep editing'?
- Do you usually spend around 20-30 minutes a day writing or do you make little edits which take a shorter time?
- In your personal time, do you read news about the 'Athletics' topic or do you only read encyclopedic materials?
- How do you collaborate with other contributors? Do you use IRC live chat?
- Do you program something related to your activity on English Wikipedia, or install advanced tools (those not enabled by default)? What are they?
- Hope you have an opportunity to answer these questions, this may help me with editing. Gryllida (talk) 23:12, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- 1. I use source editor, the 2010 toolbar editor.
- 2. It doesn't have a button to do that specifically AFAIK, but you can preview and keep editing, or you can save to a draft and then click edit again to keep editing.
- 3. Combination of both. I think long-form / prose writing is healthy but it unfortunately takes more time.
- 4. I read / listen to a lot of news sites and message boards.
- 5. I tried to start a Discord / Matrix group but it hasn't really taken off yet. So I mostly communicate on-wiki.
- 6. Yes to both questions. I use dozens of tools, too many to list. But you can see my scripts at w:User:Habst/common.js and at my user page.
- --Habst (talk) 11:58, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- In my scripts on enwiki or global (don't remember which) there is "instantSave", you might find it relevant to point 1 and 2, just (I didn't figure out how to switch to the old editor here on this wiki). I will check out your scripts thanks.
- Can I ping you if there is a new draft about athletics here? Only athletics or any sport? Maybe it will be once or twice a year and your help would be very welcomed.
- Thanks, Gryllida (talk) 12:09, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

- @Gryllida BigKrow (talk) 19:58, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi BigKrow
- Nice to meet you. What are your favourite topics and regions?
- A few points:
- We had a "main reviewer" on duty usually, or a few,who could review anything. I was not one of them. I don't tolerate US politics or sports. I also usually, for last 10 years, unable to review anything that is not very short. My contribution was mainly elaborating how to improve a draft to make it more likely to pass a review. (Speaking in modern terms from water cooler, I was and am able to function as a pre-reviewer, but not as a full reviewer unless the story is in my focus area. My focus areas include Australia region, and science-and-technology topic.)
- This year my activity reduced due to my personal circumstances.
- I reviewed one draft this week and I will try to gradually increase my activity in the next several weeks.
- Hope it helps and I am happy to help you further in case you have additional questions or suggestions.
- Regards, Gryllida (talk) 10:22, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

I could ping you if there is a science/tech article (I might write on soon by the way) or a short article if we just quickly need an admin/reviewer, and if you are available you could help. editI would love to review this article, but the notes were sent to Scoop -- I cannot access my WN email account. That is a major problem. This has to be rectified.--Bddpaux (talk) 18:19, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- I have been trying to reach Acagastya for two weeks to get access to the mail server now.
- Apologies for the delay. He provided me access but I did not setup my access to it from all my devices. One of my devices died and we have this situation now.
- Internally we should have a Wikinewsie/wn-reporters wiki. We had one before. It could be good to put cell numbers of key users with privileged access into such an internal wiki one day. Would you agree?
- I will keep you updated. Gryllida (talk) 02:15, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Familiar? mpox article
editIn written form this may come across as snitty (so please don't take it that way) -- but as a Reviewer (Editor), I don't think one really needs to be familiar with a topic to review/publish an article appertaining... one just needs to know the rules about what does/doesn't work around here. Don't want to scold you for not reviewing something, while I am busily not reviewing it myself -- I am just curious about your thinking.--Bddpaux (talk) 00:30, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Bddpaux I find myself more successful in digging sources, for hours at times, for some topics but not for others. Weather and crime events, and local news, are in the former category. I find it unfortunately very difficult to work outside of this small list of topics. I don't, for example, know, nor can remember quickly, that WHO has a chairperson or some structure in it that votes on things; I can easily misuse or misplace their names. Reviewing a story with new vocabulary takes me two or three times as much time (which is my current environment comes in blocks of 5 minutes, rather often not a whole free hour, not to mention two, due the surrounding noise.) I don't know whether that's normal or not. It would be interesting for me to know whether other reviewers have such stronger and weaker topics also, or not. I am happy to clarify as desired. Gryllida (talk) 10:32, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

Regarding the request at AAA
editRecently you said this at WN:AAA[1]: Thank you for your help AramilFeraxa. For Michael.C.Wright's reference, I am a local sysop and I may be able to assist quickly, I only need clearer instructions what needs to be done and up to two days to respond. Seems like a non urgent issue and I had no idea what steps are needed. If anything is needed in future a request can be made here with specific instructions.
Are you suggesting that I did not give local admins an opportunity to take action on the request? I initially made the request at AAA six days ago, explicitly so that any admin, whether global or local (yourself included), could respond. However, no local admin addressed it until after a global sysop stepped in to assist.
It is counter-productive to ask global sysops to step back when local admins are not addressing the workload. We have been requesting assistance from local admins since July[2]] to make necessary edits to edit-protected pages for the upgrade project, and those tasks still remain unfinished.
If your schedule does not permit making the edits yourself, could you consider temporarily removing or downgrading the edit protection on the listed[3] pages? That would allow me to complete the changes and move the project forward.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I appreciate any steps you can take to help resolve this. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 14:56, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Michael.C.Wright
- Thank you for asking me.
- It isn't Wikipedia, if it is not vandalism then waiting more than six days is fine. I would have seen the message eventually. Possibly on a weekend.
- I am not sure how I am supposed to follow the page. I managed to subscribe to receive notifications about recent changes by joining 'en.wikinews' live chat on Wikimedia IRC network. There is a bot that outputs each recent change. However, this is too much for me to read on my busier days. It would be nice if there was a way to receive notifications of new edits on-wiki, with each notification being given a priority (for example, messages which ping me or are on my personal talk page or are on AAA are 'very high'; messages or edits to articles I watch are 'high'; everything else is 'average'). I haven't seen any way how this can be achieved. So my responses are spotty for now and I welcome any assistance in the setup.
- For the above reason, highlighting me or leaving me a message could help. (I'm two weeks behind on my echo notifications, but yet this is going to likely be something that I read among first items on my list when I am less busy.)
- I don't know what you want me to do. One option is to downgrade protection. What is the other option? What edits can I possibly make myself? The link in "downgrading the edit protection on the listed[3] page" contains a long discussion and does not include a list of pages I can immediately act on.
- Thank you again. Gryllida (talk) 17:56, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
