Re 261 eaters down in Former PH 1st lady's 90th birthdayEdit

Hi Gryllida,

I have updated the article. I am trying to reach the hospitals but sadly "no latest news about affected peoples' condition" as DOH released a statement the incident is in light of suspected mass food poisoning.

--Dehgel (talk) 04:39, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

Whose quote is that? Is that the response from the hospitals? Gryllida (talk) 10:18, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

--Gryllida (talk) 20:20, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

I updated the article. It was the statement of Department of Health (DOH) on July 4 this year, which monitoring all hospitals where affected people have admitted. Many of the patients were discharged from hospital. Dehgel (talk) 20:20, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
@Dehgel: Unfortunately, that information still comes from last Thursday. In order to refresh the article, there would need to be some new information that came to light within the past day or two. Or some further development (even an announcement), with two sources, for a refocus. --Pi zero (talk) 13:34, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

You're right, this is a bug. (This api query needs a cmlimit, otherwise it only retrieves the first 10 members of the category.) Sorry about that!...
This has now been fixed, and I expect the notifications to appear shortly.
(Just as a reminder, please check the user script detailed at this section or that one: you don't have it enabled here, and without it, your talk page might become difficult to read.) Gryllida (talk) 01:33, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

SpamEdit

Hi Gryllida,

Any chance you can write a self-learning spam-blocker in five minutes? Today was a nightmare. I can't continue. Cheers, --SVTCobra 01:10, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi SVTCobra.
I'd be concerned about fully automatic spam deletion.
Would a one-click 'delete this page as spam and block this user [and do one more click for mass delete]' button help?
Regards, Gryllida (talk) 01:16, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
I was half-joking. But I am fried right now. --SVTCobra 01:21, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
This is one of the things I have in mind to build an assistant for. That wouldn't happening in the next five minutes, though. --Pi zero (talk) 01:25, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
I was thinking a bit bigger. An artificially intelligent program that populates the blacklist or whatever is supposed to stop spam from being posted in the first place. When something slips by, it looks at what the human admins blocked as spam and learns. This is a fantasy as far as I can tell. At least without a googoplex of $. And the downfall would probably be the system learns the best way to block spam is to block all contributions. Good night, folks. --SVTCobra 01:41, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
"Artificial intelligence" is a misnomer. --Pi zero (talk) 01:48, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
Can we enable mw:Extension:ORES here? I think it learns spam patterns and offers them for human review. I could build a nice UI for it. Gryllida (talk) 02:02, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
No thanks. --Pi zero (talk) 02:51, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

GryllidaEdit

Gryllida is an interesting page you created a couple of days ago. Would you like me to redirect it to your user page or develop it into a full news article? Cheers, --SVTCobra 01:40, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

I'm using it for testing my 'welcome a bit' software as I am rewriting it to "listen" for page categorizations in recent changes instead of querying DPL lists for new category additions. If its precence in the main namespace is causing any difficulties I do not mind experimenting in my user space instead. Please let me know if this is the case and then I'll move it over. Gryllida (talk) 02:00, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
No worries. I am disappointed I don't get to write another article, though. ... No, it's fine, I just didn't know what it was about. As long as you are using it and tracking it, it's more than fine. --SVTCobra 02:07, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks SVTCobra. Clearly "check rss feed for new entries for all Svetlana's subscriptions, then for all SVTCobra's subscriptions, and so on" has performance issues. I'm just rewriting the logic now to make it more sensible.
Once that's done I'll get back to you about how to make deleting spam easier, I think at the very least this is too many clicks at the moment. Gryllida (talk) 02:10, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Practical disadvantageEdit

Although setting Trigonidiida's bot bit keeps the notifications themselves out of RC, I'm finding if I'm watching a talk page that gets such notices, it's really difficult to sort out non-bot remarks there. Such as on this page — I saw SVTCobra had said something here, and wondered what it was... and then had to wrestle with the page revision history. I'm not sure what to suggest, but it seems worth thinking about. --Pi zero (talk) 02:15, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for sharing this. I think that I will need to delegate the archival task to the separate bot account also. I will let you know when this happens. Gryllida (talk) 02:18, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
That 'Pi zero' character is quite the stalker. --SVTCobra 02:31, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
I reckon that this character has an engine somewhere, even if there is no 'this is a car' label on the tin. :) Gryllida (talk) 03:04, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
Having the bot remove sections as well as adding them... hmm. Would want to avoid doing so if anyone else has commented in the section, I guess? Could have some drawbacks; it'd imply less involvement by the subscriber, after all. I've pretty mixed feelings about that; and of course it wouldn't help with sorting out the revision history of the talk page... afaik. --Pi zero (talk) 13:01, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi DannyS712. Thank you for offering your help. This tool is in Perl. The current version [1] checks for all feeds of each user every 10 minutes; for instance, it checks all news in 'Australia' because I am signed up for it, then all news in 'Africa' because someone else is. This is redundant; instead it should look for all new pages, and sort them by topics and users afterwards. The new version is available at [2] in the 'Draft version' section. Would you please be able to complete it? --Gryllida (talk) 22:45, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
I didn't realize its for the welcome a bit project. I'll take a look, but I'm not familiar with perl --DannyS712 (talk) 23:13, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Until after January 1 I don't have the time to add new projects, but after that if you're still interested it should be a good time to talk. Until then, my contributions will be in bursts and splutters, sorry --DannyS712 (talk) 23:24, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Research projectsEdit

Gryllida, a lot of your ideas for additions to the article are okay, and I would like to believe that you just don't realize that they would take massive amounts of research or that they require information that isn't available to us in sourceable form. Is there a way I can tell you, "Gryllida, that's not a practical request," without making you feel like you have to say "Yes it is" or making you feel put on the spot? I don't want you to feel bad. I want you to feel appreciated.

  • Would you be willing to go and find the information you requested on the slippery business article yourself, just so you can see how much time and energy it would take and what kind of results you get?
  • Would you be willing to, in the future, make additions like this in the comment space rather than review space and clearly mark them as "would-be-nice" and not "necessary" so that other Wikinewsies are exposed to your idea and can work on it if they want but without the idea itself delaying publication?
  • Would you be willing to always read the source articles before rejecting a Wikinews article from review?
  • Any other ideas?

It took me a while to realize that you aren't just being grossly wasteful with other people's time, that you just didn't know what your requests would involve. But this article became a headache and it didn't have to. Darkfrog24 (talk) 13:47, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for asking. Quantitative comparison with existing solutions is required otherwise we mislead the readers. I am willing to try and find it asap. I will get back to you about it soon. Gryllida (talk) 08:01, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
Gryllida had a very valid concern about (ultimately) neutrality, and I understood it and may have inadequately enforced it. If we determine the article was not suitable for publication, the situation may call for a {{correction}}. --Pi zero (talk) 13:11, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
Pi zero, while I have absolutely no authority to forbid you to participate in this thread, sometimes when you come in and it looks like you're taking sides, I feel like you put both of us on the spot and the conversation devolves into who has to submit to whom, social stuff, instead of staying on the less personal subjects of content and process. Please consider whether we might work this out better by ourselves. If that or any specific article has a neutrality issue, I'll head to its collaboration page. But neutrality is not really what I've asked Gryllida about here and I want to stay focused.
This is about when the reviewer asks the drafter for multi-hour/multi-day research projects without realizing it, and it's not specific to this one article.
G, thanks for giving this experiment a shot. Just to be clear, I'm not proposing that we use the content in the article. The purpose of my request is for you to learn for yourself how hard it is and how long it takes to find the content you asked me to find, and whether it is available to us at all. Darkfrog24 (talk) 16:59, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
The research paper says "reduce cleaning water consumption by ~90% compared with untreated surfaces". Took me two minutes to figure that out. Could this please be added to the article, Pi zero? I would suggest adding "Treatment of a toilet surface with the new coating would reportedly reduce its water consumption by about 90%, the researchers reported" to the end of the first paragraph. Gryllida (talk) 00:32, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
Alas, at this point it can no longer be added by normal means, because we're more than 24 hours post-publish. --Pi zero (talk) 00:40, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
Okay, so Gryllida... 1) You did not happen to find the information that you asked for in review, a comparison of the newly invented treatment to other treatments—and I'm guessing because you did not look for it, but 2) you did find something else that—correct me if I'm guessing wrong—you liked just as much, a comparison of the newly invented treatment to no treatment at all, and you found it by reading the source. I'm also inferring that 3) you read the source for the first time just now, after publication and not before. Do I understand your experience correctly in these three ways? Darkfrog24 (talk) 05:36, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
It is the information I asked for in review. Gryllida (talk) 19:33, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
Okay, we've found our problem, then. The problem is that no this is not what you asked for in review. If you had said, "I think this article should include information on how a treated surface is different from an untreated surface," I would have slipped it in no problem. You said "How does 'approximately 500 flushes' compare with the utility of the currently popular toilet cleaning liquids" and "how this invention outperforms existing liquids." That's not the same thing. It is as if you said in review "The article needs a peach" (to which I responded "peaches are out of season; we cannot get any peaches"). Now, here, you're saying, "The article needs a banana."
Do you mean "Yes I asked for a comparison of the newly invented product to similar products but I would have been satisfied with a comparison of the newly invented product to ...well, anything that would have been good to compare it to. I really just wanted a comparison at all." Do you mean that drafters are to interpret your reviews as broad and vague and "hm, something like this" rather than as specific? "When I say 'the article needs a peach,' any type of fruit will do"? Darkfrog24 (talk) 19:41, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
I needed a comparison with what 99.9% of people are doing now in civilized world. Gryllida (talk) 04:55, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
That makes sense, but then you need to ask for that and not something else.
Here is what I think happened. You read the draft, observed that there was at least one thing wrong with it that necessitated a "not ready" anyway. In this case, you believed the date wasn't there, and so on. Then you thought "Since it's not ready anyway, there is no need for me to spend my own time reading the sources just yet. I will do it later if the other problems are fixed." This is not necessarily bad; you were just being efficient. Then you thought, "While I am here, I think this article could also use ...something, maybe a comparison. I will ask for it as part of the review." And you did that before reading the source. Have I guessed correctly?
I the thing we should do is the next time I say, "Gryllida, you have accidentally requested a large research project," I should also say, "It is time to read the sources and see if there is any information already available to us that would accomplish something similar." Do you think that would help? If it would only make you feel uncomfortable, then tell me so that I will not do it. Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:43, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
My exact request started with "Relevance of the finding is not clear." For future reference when a volunteer asks for something that is missing in the article, they are not required to read sources and include the answer into their question. Gryllida (talk) 22:44, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
I can't tell if the volunteer in this post you've just made is meant to be the reviewer who is asking for information or the drafter who is asked for it.
It is my understanding that Wikinews has absolutely no rule telling reviewers exactly when during review they have to read the sources. I personally believe that is the answer to the research project problem, though. It's coming from me, not from Wikinews. I believe I'm enough.
However, your post does show another solution that I had not thought of. If you say "Relevance of the finding is not clear; find some to establish relevance" and don't ask for anything specific, that would work well too!
I feel we have made progress on this issue. How do you feel about it? Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:28, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
I meant myself. I don't think omitting the "[For example], how does 500 flushes compare with existing solution?" question would have been helpful, since I did write "Relevance of the finding is not clear." in the first sentence. Gryllida (talk) 00:51, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
Also, I would have considered it fair to add "The researchers did not specify the number of flushes for untreated surfaces." to the article, if there is no comparison available, to reduce confusion. Gryllida (talk) 00:51, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
So next time, I plan to say, "Gryllida, that is not a practical request [here's why]. What is it that you want the addition of [information] to accomplish, and can you think of anything more accessible that would do?" If this would make you uncomfortable say so, and I will refrain from saying it. Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:58, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
This would cause an unnecessary delay by asking me to repeat myself. Gryllida (talk) 03:23, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
Perhaps I misspoke: I would not be asking you to repeat yourself. I would be telling you something more like "pick something else." If you are ever especially concerned about delays, you could read the sources before requesting additional information to get a sense of what is and is not available. You'd have to read them at some point before hitting "publish" anyway.
I think we've made progress. I think we've made all the progress we will make today. How do you feel about it? Darkfrog24 (talk) 19:07, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
You do not need to wait for me to pick. Please do not ask questions that leave you idle.
Instead, "I could not find this comparison, but here is another one that also improves relevance" is more apt, isn't it? Gryllida (talk) 23:06, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
I think we've gotten as far as we're going to get in this particular thread. We have made good progress. When you ask for research projects, I will inform you that you have done so and ask you whichever questions seem appropriate. Darkfrog24 (talk) 23:18, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Just asking whichever questions seem appropriate would seem sufficient to me. Informing that "you asked for a research project" seems to me like a waste of time. Gryllida (talk) 05:48, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

France storyEdit

thanks for the comments but i'am unable to finish story as of now. Sorry for confusion. IcedRailYards (talk) 01:00, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

OK, thanks for letting me know. I'll see if someone can take over it. Gryllida (talk) 01:04, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
Maybe since its so brief we could move it to briefs? or if you had something else in mind? Also i created a news briefs page.Hope you dont mind? IcedRailYards (talk) 01:21, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks - I think it can go to both briefs and stay an article. I was personally going to expand it to add answers to the five Ws in the first paragraph. It would seem difficult to read if this information is not included. Gryllida (talk) 01:24, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
