Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews!

Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it!

It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Also make sure to check the list of recently created articles to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.

I didn't make any edits. Maybe you saw me on the account creation log. BTW why is this welcome not signed? welcomes are signed in both 'books and 'pedia. Kayau (talk) 01:24, 21 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your article, Hong Kong by-elections start today

I saw your recent article and quickly looked over it. It needs to be slightly longer. If you are unable to locate any information relevant to the story itself, perhaps a sentence or two of background information could be added to the article to pad it out.

Also, when you finish writing a story please place the {{review}} tag at the top of the article page to draw the attention of a peer reviewer. This will ensure that your article is factchecked, copyedited, copychecked, and, hopefully, published. If you don't place a "review" tag on your submission sometimes the article will get lost, and no one will notice your story's existence after it has gone stale (IE, is too old to be published).

All that aside, welcome to Wikinews:). I hope your first attempt at an article here is successful. Gopher65talk 03:16, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Request for reviewer status

Per your request, I have closed the discussion as "Candidate withdrew". I suggest that you read up on our policies which are often quite different from Wikipedia, study the style guide thoroughly and write a few more articles that address the issues raised and come back and apply again. TranslateWiki request

I have granted you Translator rights on TranslateWiki. Good luck with your new job ;-) Cheers. --Diego Grez return fire 02:20, 6 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Interesting that you posted a message here btw. You know, I am more active on books and pedia. (OK I'm on a pedia break, but I'm still active on books.) Kayau (talk · contribs)

To your msg at my enwiki page, in case you didn't see. And to the refdesk question– but I'm not sure how much help I was. May I ask what you're doing with the translations on the talk? Is it as "evidence" or something? Sonia (talk) 11:09, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oh, about that, please see Talk:Hong Kong Democratic Party stirs up universal suffrage reform package controversy, as well as the archives of the assistance water cooler and Brian McNeil's user talk. Kayau (talk · contribs) 11:18, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unable to publish your article.

Hi Kayau. I'm leaving you this message as a courtesy, to inform you that I have reviewed Hong_Kong_'tutor_king'_applies_for_bankruptcy and I am presently unable to publish it. The reason for this is that I need to be able to review all the sources, and since two are in Cantonese, I'm not able to do this. This isn't to say the article isn't fit to publish, merely that I can't confirm all the information. If you can find a second source in English, please leave a message here (since I'll be watching the page) or at my talk page here. Thanks for your contribution, I look forward to re-reviewing it when you've updated it. BarkingFish (talk) 02:04, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've replied at the cooler. User:tempodivalse seems to be online; maybe you could ask him. Kayau (talk · contribs) 03:47, 27 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've seen your activity level here has decreased over the last time. I also saw you created many great articles that demonstrate to me you know the website's policies and guidelines regarding content, and all that jazz. Would you like me to nominate you for the right? I'm sure you'd do well :) Diego Grez return fire 18:26, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I'd like to accept, but I'm not confident about my own article-writing abilities yet. I plan to write an article soon, perhaps later today, to assess my language proficiency. Also, if I do become a reviewer I'll do little more than a few tweaks here and there and a couple rollbacks. I'll let you know if I'm interested later. Your request at WN:RFP was a success, and I've given you admin rights. Congrats! Of course, help and advice is always on hand as you get used to the tools. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 14:54, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for support everyone, as well as the comments on AGF. I'll try not to let you down. :) Kayau (talk · contribs) 15:47, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Since you've also become a reviewer, for that you should take a look at {{Reviewer message}} and (shameless plug) WN:Tips on reviewing articles.
Congratulations! --Pi zero (talk) 17:34, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Actually, that's a fair point - would you mind going through a confirmation on WN:FR/RFP since it was originally only an adminship request? I ask because you never actually confirmed you wanted reviewer, and most people only voted for admin. A quick confirm would clear that up. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 17:39, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Seconded, Blood Red Sandman. Since each area of RfP only deals with one specific right, clumping them together by giving rights not requested kinda circumvents process. I'd appreciate the WN:FR/RFP purely to confirm that people had no objections to the additional authorised rights. BarkingFish (talk) 19:48, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Done, and thanks for the congrats and links! :) Kayau (talk · contribs) 15:26, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer Promotion

I Diego Grez (talk · contribs) has promoted you to the Wikinews:Reviewer class, entrusting you with the ability to mark revisions of articles as sighted (review). Please take a moment to read:

You are welcome to use {{User Wikinews reviewer}}.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask for help on my talk page, and thank you for contributing to Wikinews!

Thanks. :) Kayau (talk · contribs) 14:49, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey there! Just a quick note to say that using {{subst:aband}} works better than {{abandoned}}, as it will automagically add the date (to make it easier for administration later). Regards, — μ 09:23, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am soliciting your input please!

I am attempting a Dispute resolution at Wikinews:Dispute resolution/Brian McNeil and Mattisse and I am soliciting your input as to the problem. I urge you to give feedback. Soliciting input is the next step in the Dispute resolution process. Please do! I can't participate in the project until this is resolved. Regards, Mattisse (talk) 00:07, 6 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.

Hi Pi zero. I'm back. I won't really be very active any more, though. Kayau (talk · contribs) 07:41, 4 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Kayau. :-)  --Pi zero (talk) 12:31, 4 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The two sources are not independent of each other, so nothing based on them is really going to be truly free of copyvio no matter how differently it's phrased. The article would need multiple independent sources first. --Pi zero (talk) 15:58, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I know; I did suggest that xe use a Tagalog article and use information from there (since there appears to be no other English source available). If it is on the verge of going stale, I can use a Chinese source as well. Kayau (talk · contribs)
Dates on sources wouldn't necessarily protect from staleness, of course; it's when the information came to light that matters. --Pi zero (talk)
What I meant was, if the author is unable to find a second source before time runs out, I can use a Chinese source as a second source. Kayau (talk · contribs) 22:23, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Why do you want to hang on to this article? We don't usually save synthesis to userspace — in fact, without very clear limits (hence my question) it'd be a very bad precedent to set; we can't allow ourselves to become an archive of failed articles. --Pi zero (talk) 01:40, 19 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

This is not really the first time I've had a failed article userfied. In fact, it's the fourth, though it's the first time I've done it myself. Keeping my failed articles is (for me at least) a great way to remember my past mistakes. This one, in particular, highlights what WN stuff I've forgotten during me wikibreak and I plan to refer back to it again before sending articles for review in the future. If you think it is inappropriate to store it here, I'd appreciate if you warned me before deleting them to let me save it in my hard drive. Thanks Kayau (talk · contribs) 13:48, 19 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
