A pitty that you didn't write something on the blog about it... I've blogged about recent reports today, maybe you could write something about your experience with this interview, your cooperation with Brian... You could ask Zanimum to invite you to the blog.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 19:48, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I did blog about it on my blog: http://gpollard.wordpress.com ([1] and [2]). The blog is also under a Creative Commons licence if that helps. --Nzgabriel | Talk 20:38, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I just read about it on Planet Wikimedia, as long as it shows up there, we'll have promotion for Wikinews!--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 12:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The video response from Key is even more amazing... One peace of advise, email him to make sure you get permission to license the video under the GFDL which you claim on Commons, or some idiot might delete it... Or even better, you might want to dually-license it under GFDL-cc-by-2.5, which prevents problems for using it here on Wikinews.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 15:54, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ouch, I just read the license email,... Normally Commons doesn't allow works if derivate works are not allowed... In fact, if it can't be altered, then we can't have a Wikinews version... I really fear for the future of this file on Commons.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 10:02, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
You should send them an email to ask if we could have derivate works, i.e. our version of the video. They may allow that, although it would contradict their request to not have alterations... I mean, it's normal that you can cut videos, no? Anyways, they always retain personality rights...--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 10:08, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
The e-mail permission is in regards to our version: "the video in question (indexed on your Wiki at http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Exclusive_video_interview_with_New_Zealand_Opposition_leader%2C_John_Key as Wikinews_john_key.ogg)." The person who I was talking with was quite adamant that derivative works were not allowed explicitly. --Nzgabriel | Talk 10:41, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well that's very unfortunate, because I believe it will get deleted by Commons within the week...Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 12:17, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll start discussions up again with the person who I have been talking to. --Nzgabriel | Talk 19:57, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was trying to build a case, okay, on blogs, on the popularity of Paris Hilton. Is that impossible to do on this website? I wasn't trying to blog, merely report on it. My instinct was to revert you if it really mattered which it doesn't. -Edbrown05 12:28, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why is Paris Hilton famous? What has she done? That's the report I was working toward. -Edbrown05 12:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I didn't think it really mattered what one person thought on his blog. And I didn't think that they were a 'well-known' blogger, as they didn't even have their own domain name yet. If you think it is important to add more substance to the story, feel free to add it back in. --Nzgabriel | Talk 23:48, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was wondering, would you be able to track down the source information for Image:Before Lahar.jpg, Image:After lahar.jpg, Image:Lahar during.jpg and Image:Lahar.jpg? If not, they should probably be deleted per Wikimedia fair use provision policies, but I thought that, given you are active around here (and we love you for being so :D), I'd be courteous and come to you first and see what you could do. Welcome to the latest edition of the Wikinews Bulletin! This week, you may have noticed a slight change in the design. This was because I felt that as a different project, Wikinews should not copy the Wikipedia Signpost. If you disagree, be bold and make your opinion known on the talk page.

Help with interview

edit

Hi there, as a fellow Oceanian and someone apparently highly experienced in the field of WikiNews interviews, I was hoping to ask you for some advice. Mainly,

  1. How do you go about approaching a subject to request an interview?
  2. How do you put together questions?
  3. How do you record the interview?

Horribly vague and open-ended questions I know, so I'll be a bit more specific. There's a public official coming close to 6 months in office, and I was thinking of organising an interview on the general topics of "Who are you? What have you done so far? What are you thinking of doing?" and writing up a little piece here, but not having done this kind of thing before I wouldn't mind a few prods in the right direction. Confusing Manifestation (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 04:45, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I have done a few interviews. The way I get in contact with them is usually by e-mail, or some other technological device (I.M.). So try and find their e-mail online.
When I am asking for an interview I usually say who I am, what the interview will be about, and how many RSS readers there are.
I usually like the interview to be done via e-mail, that way I have exact quotes, etc. But I recently did one (not yet released) via telephone. I recorded that by putting the phone on speaker phone, and put my computer microphone next to the speaker. Very basic.
If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. --Nzgabriel | Talk 05:30, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the quick reply. I was actually planning on trying for a face-to-face interview, so do you know anyone here who's done a few of those I can talk to? Also, how many RSS readers are there, and where do you get that information? Thanks, Confusing Manifestation (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 01:29, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
There are 30,000 RSS readers, this information can be found on the Wikimedia Foundation website here: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Our_projects#Wikinews. To do an interview you could buy a voice recorder, or just jot down notes using pen and paper (yes, those still exist ;) ). I don't know of anyone here who has done a face-to-face interview similar to what you are proposing. Sorry. --Nzgabriel | Talk 02:53, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Large image note from poll

edit

Hi, I noticed that on the Wikinews:Main page poll you mentioned that the large image lead needs more OS/browser functionality. I think that we've tested it on all major operating systems and browsers and it appears to work correctly in the vast majority of the cases. Did you have a specific example in mind? -- IlyaHaykinson 08:54, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I fixed the font size issue on Ubuntu, again. We need to add it to the instructions to leave lots of extra space I guess. As for IE6, I'll download an IE6 virtual machine to test with that on a regular basis. -- IlyaHaykinson 09:02, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Edbrown05's block

edit

I saw that you blocked him again. Ehh... isn't there a better way to handle his type of behavior? It's always been the WikiWay that blocks should be preventative, not punitive. I started a discussion on the water cooler to see what the community thinks we should do.

I'm not wild about his behavior, and the block log is very very revealing. However, he's also a really decent contributer in article space. *shrug* irid:t 07:20, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Terror raids in NZ

edit

You have a great article and it's very well-written, and I think it's a better second lead than lead. The only times I've thought my interviews are worthy of lead article status are the two Presidential articles. If it wasn't for Brownback, and the significance and prestige it gives the project to have him talking to us (which boosts all our work on here, as it gives us more credibility, more readers, and more feeds to outside sites) I wouldn't have had an issue with the lead being yours. This is just a special circumstance is all, and a rare one that may not be repeated. --David Shankbone 19:11, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for leaving a message, I was kind of angry that this was happening. I concede that your article is of importance, and that it is (at this point in time of Wikinews' history) quite a feat. And also yours was original reporting, mine wasn't. I still hold a view that mine was perhaps more news-worthy than yours, but I guess that's just because yours was an interview. Oh well, what's done is done. --Nzgabriel | Talk 00:13, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Looking for help on Video Interview

edit

Hi Gabriel,

I'm currently pursuing an interview with Reggie Bibbs (see Wikinews:Story preparation/Interview with Reggie Bibbs on his life with neurofibromatosis), and I might get lucky and get him to give us a video interview.

Problem is, I don't have any video editing skills, so I was wondering if you would like to help me on this project, and do something like what you did for the John Key interview (ie editing the raw footage, adding a Wikinews-branded introduction and then subtitles)? Do you have time for anything like that during the next week or so?

cheers, --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:54, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I can do that for you, "Steven". Looks like we'll have a few more interviews in the coming week(s), as I have one that will be done by Wednesday and the other is yet to be sorted out. --Nzgabriel | Talk 22:26, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Excellent, thanks in advance, I'll let you know when I get the file (will probably be .avi). --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 21:05, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I just started working in a new hospital which seriously restricts internet access, and I have not internet cafe nearby... could you help me to download the video and upload it to Commons under the cc-by-2.0 license (I'll forward permission to OTRS, just say it's pending). I got these instructions for FTP transfer of the video:
Using an FTP program like Fetch.
The URL is:207.44.136.30/username is: anonymous
password is empty (blank)
or in a web browser: ftp://anonymous@207.44.136.30/
If you could have a look at the video and possible edit it as previously discussed, that would be great. take your time anyway. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 22:16, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
As a side note, you probably already know this, but all web browsers are also ftp clients, so there is no need to use a special program like fetch. Bawolff 01:05, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

WN:TO-DO

edit

I have started WN:TO-DO as a place to list what should be daily or weekly points to check for regular contributors. Some parts are admin-only (e.g. Archiving) but others are things that anyone can get involved with. Feel free to add additional points and spread the word about this shortcut to get people helping do Wikignome tasks. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:55, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Uploading images

edit

PLease remember to add a fair use rational to images. I have deleted toge images you uploaded as the were not used and had no raitonal. This makes them eligiable for sppedy deletion. When you write the associated article feel free to restore the image if you write a rational. Anonymous101 :) 11:43, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The same applies to Image:John Key in Antarctica.jpg. I'll give you a few minutes to add a rational but uless you do it will have to be deleted. Anonymous101 :) 11:46, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Original reporting

Since our last edition, many articles have claimed original reporting. Here are the most recent:

Several others wrote stories based on television sources. The Wikinews Reports blog activity was mostly related to some of these stories. You can ask any of the blog authors if you want to help out on the blog.

Editor's note

In the last few months activity on Wikinews has continued to decrease to an incredibly low level. There are hardly any new contributers joining and one of our best users, DragonFire1024 (talk · contribs) has gone on Wikibreak. However, some excellent articles are continuing to be written. The Game?

edit

ARe you sure it was a wise move to interview that site? My impression was that particular site was more a sign that "The Game" was already dead. Well, whatever, but it's not always best to imagine that someone draping themselves in some part of popular culture really has much to do with it. Nyarlathotep (talk) 16:17, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request

edit

Hi, if you are still online would you mind correcting the headline of http://wikinewsreports.blogspot.com/2008/09/operative-for-republican-party-edited.html to make it more accurate. Please change it to something like

News agencies suggest that campaign operative for Republican Party edited article on vice presidential nominee

(By the way, I am sending this message to every user with blog access who seems to be online as the headline has a major inaccuracy and I don't want to see it on Google News)

Thanks, Anonymous101talk 20:13, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

privs

edit

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
The privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.

TVNZ photo

edit

Hello Gabriel,

I'm not sure if this contact is still active for you, but thought I'd try it. I am the author of a book called Moon: Living Abroad in New Zealand. It's a guide for migrants and potential migrants that tells them all about life in New Zealand and how to immigrate.

The book is going into its third edition this year, and I am looking to update some of the photos in it. One photo I had in previous editions was the TVNZ building in Christchurch, in the section about media in New Zealand. This building was pulled down after the earthquake, so I want to replace the photo with the TVNZ building in Auckland.

I saw your photo of the TVNZ sign on the Auckland building and would love to use it. I know it's on a creative commons license already, but the publisher would prefer to get specific permission from you to use it, with full credit to you of course.

If this is OK with you, perhaps you could fill out a permission form and then scan (or take a picture of it) and email it back to me. I posted my email below so let me know if you want me to send you the form. If it's not OK to use the photo, just let me know and I won't submit it.

If you could get back to me either way by February 7, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance and I hope you're having a great summer!
