About the Myanmar military coup article

Sorry if I sound rather contemptful, you'll see why.

The issue with your deletion of the article ― which I played a prominent part in writing ― is that I received no notification to the deletion at all. None, zilch, nada. Now, there some responsibility that should be shouldered onto me, I ― probably ― should've had the talk page on my watchlist. But, you most certainly should have alerted me on my talk page, like User:Acagastya who politely alerted me and I then updated the article.

I have other words for Wikinews in general, like how it takes an eternity ― at least in the news world ― for an article to be reviewed. But, that's irrelevant to this subject. --Kirkworld (talk) 02:20, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Kirkworld: sorry you feel that way about your article. Any article that you write, if it is abandoned, it is tagged as {{abandoned}}. If there are no significant changes, it is then deleted. An author needs to look at the article, and be alert about it. The discussion about the article, and its status will be on the article or its talk. We may occassionally inform the author if there is a problem that can be fixed, but this is a standard procedure. Re taking forever for article to be reviewed, Kirkworld, we are all volunteers here, with real life commitments too. Reviewers feel bad about losing an article, and it really sucks to lose the article like this. I hope you reconsider this with light that sometimes we lose the race against time, due to off-wiki real world commitments. I would say, how about you give one more try, pick something fresh, and write another article. If you do not mind using IRC, consider joining #wikinews or #wikinews-en, where reviewers and authors can have a real-time discussion about the potential problems and fixes for an article which helps for a speedy review.
•–• 02:47, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Kirkworld: I appreciate it can be frustrating to see work deleted but these are agreed procedures we have been using for years. If we did not use these procedures, we would probably see huge numbers of abandoned drafts. Unlike Wikipedia, we felt it was necessary to only keep the published articles and those that were still fresh. I am open to the idea of changing the parameters e.g. may be moving the "abandoned" procedure from four plus two days to five plus three days. This would need agreement by Wikinewsies. I’d also recommend changing the settings on your Preferences so that each page you edit is automatically placed in your watchlist. --Green Giant (talk) 00:57, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've long suspected the reason it's four days is so that it's sure to be solidly past the two-to-three-day horizon for freshness. --Pi zero (talk) 00:17, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Deletion

Why did you delete the article? If you revert your changes, I promise to work on it every day. Thanks. TheFurreterPress (talk) 04:22, 18 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

It was stale. The event in question happened well over three days ago, and its overall relevance was, IMO, dubious from the start. Please refer to Wikinews:Newsworthiness for more. --Dylan Smithson (talk) 04:53, 18 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
"With the exceptions noted, it's very rare for an article to be published more than three calendar days (in UTC, the time Wikinews keeps) after what the article is reporting." --Dylan Smithson (talk) 04:54, 18 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@TheFurreterPress: Don’t be too disheartened by the deletion. We have all had draft articles rejected and deleted for one reason or another. It is part of the learning process on Wikinews. As Dylan has noted, the article became stale from about March 10/11. There were no edits for about five days - which is why I tagged it as being possibly abandoned. Unless there is some more recent aspect of that story, it will not regain freshness. It is a long-held principle of Wikinews to only publish fresh news. There are exceptions such as interviews, which can extend the freshness timescale. Could you outline anything that could refresh the story? If there is a reasonable prospect of such freshness being extended, I’ll happily restore the article. --Green Giant (talk) 08:08, 18 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Green Giant. I will be afk from Sunday morning 6AM IST to at least Tuesday morning 11 AM. I will have internet access, but won't be easy to use the mop and the bucket. And I also won't be able to review.

Moving a published page?

(Apologies if this comes out as a rant) What was the reason to move this page, Green Giant? The does not use English (US), nor did the author choose or request English (US) for the headline. If an article is published, we DO NOT move the page until after the article is archived unless it is one heck of a dying emergency. This creates multiple entries in the Facebook/twitter/RSS feed for those who are subscribed to our feed. Worse, the page was moved without leaving a redirect. Meaning anyone who saw the first post of this article was published will now end up on dead end. If you want a page to be moved post-archival, please put {{moveprotected}} on the article's talk, so one can do it later.
•–• 04:09, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, unfortunately, it does come across as a bit of a rant. "The does not use English (US)" - I’m not sure what you are referring to but the article subject is definitely a US subject. Although I personally favour British spellings wherever possible, in this case the article name just does not look right. I would have expected it to be picked up during review. Having said this, I note we have an ambiguity in the guidelines at WN:Style guide#Spelling which allows geographical preference or author preference. However it also goes on to encourage using an obvious spelling where possible and in this instance that would be the US spelling. --Green Giant (talk) 09:54, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
There are two things to discuss here. Even if the article is related to the US, the author does not have to use English (US). The choice of English variant for the article is left for the author and the reviewer (who publishes the article) to decide. If the author did not use English (US), and the reviewer didn't convert it to English (US), it should not be renamed post-publication.
And in no circumstance must an admin rename a published article without leaving a redirect. If you see our Twitter account, the first version was tweeted out -- and when we rename without leaving a redirect, anyone checking that link will see the deleted page -- which should never happen. Always leave the redirect behind. However, if the published article is renamed before it was archived -- a duplicate entry is created. So please, do not do it. (That is the reason we protect the page so only admins can move it.) As long as there is nothing severely wrong with the headline, renaming should happen only after it is {{archive}}d by a reviewer.
•–• 11:02, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Clearly we are not going to agree on this issue. I understand what you are saying about moving but you appear to be glossing over the core issue. Either the author and reviewer genuinely did not realise that "criminalise” is not a US spelling or they don’t want to acknowledge it as a valid spelling. The average US reader is going to see a non-US title for a US subject. It may seem small but things like this mark Wikinews out as sloppy, which is the image our opponents want. It is similar to using "Bombay" for “Mumbai" and putting it down to personal preference. However long Bombay was used is less relevant than the local wish for it to be referred to as Mumbai. -Green Giant (talk) 12:02, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
The Twitter feed is indeed a separate issue. If two tweets have been sent, this is either a coding issue or a setting that can be fixed. If a Twitter user did come across the deleted page, they can see where it has been moved to and I don’t think they would struggle to find the article. --Green Giant (talk) 12:02, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
a broken link will look more sloppy than the spelling variant. It is not a coding issue -- when a page is added to CAT:Published and sighted, a tweet goes out. That is how it is supposed to be. The liberty to use any English variant is so one is not forced to stick to either one going against their preference. Wikinews is not US-only news, we are for global audience. That is why the SG is purposely loose, not to force non-US volunteers having to use the other variant, as that may discourage them from writing about it. Consider this: if we had to stick with English (US) for US articles, and a reviewer simply refuses to review it because they don't find English (US) sensible -- the project will suffer. And news sites for global audience don't abandon their variant. Both BBC and The Guardian stick with English (UK) spelling for US articles, while ABC (US) used English (US) for a UK article. If someone thinks we are sloppy for using one spelling over the other, they are just ignorant people, and we should not let our editorial process be governed by people who can't grasp we write for global audience.

I had to discuss...

Hi, Green Giant. I had to discuss something about few of my articles. It would be better if we had a real-time discussion on IRC. But if not, email-based is also fine. So could you please come by on IRC? Or should I send an email instead? (It is time sensitive.)
•–• 07:14, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Acagastya: It depends on when you want to discuss it. If right now, I’m on a coffee break at work and can’t chat. I’ll probably finish at 17:30 UTC. What time would suit you? -Green Giant (talk) 07:30, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
1730 UTC seems all right, Green Giant. That is 11 PM my time, and I should be available on IRC on the usual wikinews and commons' channel. Please ping me once you are online.

I had figured you might have gotten preoccupied with something else. I can't assure about 2000 UTC. I may or may not be sleeping that time, it is 1:30 for me. But guess we will have to try. If I am going to sleep, I would most likely inform ImprWikiImpr, so you don't end up losing time.

File:Monklandsdgh.jpg

Hi, Green Giant. This article which I am reviewing uses this image. It is extremely small in resolution and lacks EXIF. I am agnostic to whether it is actually an own work or not -- it is the only upload of the person. What do you suggest we do? Right now I think I will publish it without it -- but better to get a second opinion.

Honestly......

Could you (or someone, for that matter) explain to me (like I'm a German Shepherd) how sighting revisions works? My brain just struggles with the whole business. Are ONLY changes of archived material required to be 'sighted'....what is the whole business about, really?--Bddpaux (talk) 17:22, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

For the mainspace articles, please do NOT sight any revision for unpublished article -- and only sight those edits where you have verified the changes are correct, and in accordance with the policy. That would be the simplest (though incomplete) explanation.

Right....but I'm talking about PUBLISHED articles. --Bddpaux (talk) 18:28, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry

For putting sd tag. Durantnba (talk) 18:10, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Durantnba: Don’t be sorry. Your use of the SD tag is correct because you have given otherwise legitimate reasons. On almost any other wiki the pages probably might have been deleted. However, all admins have some discretion when it comes to speedy deletion. Our thought process on EN WN is to give a chance even to pages that look hopeless. I’d recommend you look at the {{Aband}} and {{Minimal}} tags as these give a space of two to three days, which allows people to work on the article. If they don’t, the article can be deleted later. Cheers for leaving the message though. 🙂 --Green Giant (talk) 18:17, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Need some help with local upload

Hi, Green Giant. The image used for Earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant triggers evacuation has been restored and we can now replace the {{missing image}} with the original file. However, that file has since been modified and the current revision is different (in terms of colour) from the one used at the time of publication. Which means, we need a local upload under the name [[:File:Fukushima-1-5 September 2007 Thumbnail for version as of 14:03, 5 September 2007.JPG]]. What are all the things needed, including the license template and rationale for such local uploads? I ought to learn this, but don't know how to, can you please show me once?
•–• 17:08, 19 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Acagastya: You can use all of the same description details as in the current file summary but add a {{Localupload}} to keep the file from being tagged for move to Commons. I’ve uploaded it as File:Fukushima-1-5 September 2007.JPG. -Green Giant (talk) 18:51, 20 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok, that file is not on Commons......it's on WN. How did you upload it to WN?--Bddpaux (talk) 21:30, 20 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux: I uploaded it through Special:Upload, which can also be reached by clicking on "Upload fair use media" in the fourth menu at the left of any Wikinews page. It is the default upload mechanism for any Wikimedia wiki although some wikis switch it off to use people to upload only to Commons. --Green Giant (talk) 00:09, 21 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Article talk protection

I don't think article talks should be ever out of bounds, especially not indefinitely, for autoconfirmed only. Unlike article, article talk cannot be abused in a non-recoverable way, and at times, IPs leave important concerns on talk. If one IP/LTA is bothering a talk, we can investigate and handle accordingly, but let's reconsider the page protection; and even page move, which does not seem necessary.
103.48.104.239 (talk) 17:45, 31 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I agree but I only put it to indefinite to discourage the person behind the IP from repeatedly posting unrelated matters. They’ve used three separate IPs so an IP block would be ineffective. My intention is to remove the protection altogether in a few days. --Green Giant (talk) 18:27, 31 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
There should be an option to set auto-expire, no? Though I will see what the IP has been doing and think of it on cuwiki. By the way, did you get a chance to see the list? I also asked a native speaker of ZH about edit summaries of 7, 8, 9; says 7-8 have similar content (in that list).
103.48.104.239 (talk) 18:32, 31 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
No, there should not be an auto-expire. That’s what the other timescales are for. The "indefinite" doesn’t mean infinite - it means it is not a definite timescale. I haven’t had a look at the list yet but I’ll do so later today. --Green Giant (talk) 15:43, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Re: Userspace drafts

Before I answer your polite question, may I ask what the purpose might possibly be for spending the effort/time combing the wiki for things to delete? - Amgine | t 03:02, 2 August 2021 (UTC) (also, since when does en.WN block vpn/openproxy by default? pita to work around that...)Reply

That should be due to meta blocks. While I don't know precisely why Green Giant is doing it, I think both Green Giant and I would agree keeping drafts which aren't going anywhere is of no apparent benefit to the project and we are using the wiki as merely a web host. Who knows what kind of copyvio lies in there.
103.48.105.51 (talk) 03:15, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, so it is worth your time/effort to comb through userspace on the possibility of copyvio. Okay, that is certainly an opinion. - Amgine | t 03:19, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, so others don't come accuse us of impartiality when they do the same, using the wiki as their webhost.
103.48.105.51 (talk) 03:29, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Amgine: Thank you for replying. I didn’t specifically set out to look through userspace for such drafts. I was looking at the usage of a number of files in Category:Files with no machine-readable license. One of them was being used on a draft in userspace from 2011. I fully support people using userspace to draft potential content. However, wikis are not webhosts and a story from 2011 is highly unlikely to be published as news today. I think the drafts were moved to userspace to give people a chance to work on them. I don’t think it was intended that the drafts should stay permanently. The actual effort in finding the others was not that much. A search of pages using the {{date}} template produced the list at User:Green Giant/User draft list. My intention in asking some users first was really to give them the chance to save anything they really wanted before I propose these pages be deleted. The only ones nominated for deletion so far are drafts in IP userspace. --Green Giant (talk) 08:01, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
As a small rebuttal, it likely has greater costs (though still uttlerly negligible) to WMF server resources to delete/remove from visibility such resources than to simply leave them as cobwebs. Thank you for your answer to my question. Feel free to 'delete' anything of my sole creation in my portions of userspace as you feel so moved to do so. - Amgine | t 03:23, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bureaucrat template

Re this -- png is almost half the size of svg, perhaps that's why? I might have done the same, is there any other reason I migth be missing?
•–• 05:25, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Acagastya: It would be helpful if their edit summary was more than just "Replaced file". We have used the SVG on the template for almost eight years without anyone else thinking it needed changing. It isn’t even a generic template that might be used on other wikis but it is specific to Wikinews. This user (on their second edit on this wiki) decided the image needed changing but failed to provide even a brief explanation of why in their edit summary. If they’d said something like "Replaced file. PNG is smaller than SVG", I’d have probably thanked them for doing so. However, this kind of drive-by editing is not useful and I am surprised they have thousands of edits elsewhere but they don’t want to provide more than a cursory summary on a project where they are not established. If you or another established Wikinewsie wish to change it to a PNG, I’m quite happy with that. [24Cr][talk] 13:57, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I was just guessing if that could be the reason; and considering the file size (yes, since I have been cursed with sub-optimal internet connection, I opt for lower file size) -- should we stick with SVG files for all templates, or opt for smaller file size? If we were to okay that change, am I overlooking something, while being focused on the file size?
•–• 17:37, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Acagastya: I think it should be done on a case-by-case basis. In most cases, the SVG will probably be superior (size is one element of this) to other versions. Certainly SVG is the preferred option on some other wikis. However, if an alternate version is superior, I think we should go with that version. File size itself is important because many users don’t have high speed internet access (I definitely don’t). [24Cr][talk] 18:00, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bad weather

I notice bad weather in Oklahoma even Toronto.

{{Afghanistan}}

I know we have to decide on something about this -- and I know we prefer having such things to have just minimal required info, which can stay factually correct for as long as possible, and also avoiding archives from being affected. (A crazy example -- say if enwn existed a century ago -- if Nazi Germany was occupying Poland and changing the flag, changing flags in every archived Poland article with a Nazi Germany flag would seem really crazy.)

Requested articles

Given the number of blank requested articles we are getting, it feels like people using it are not getting how to fill in the details, and we need to make it more obvious for them to be able to do it? What do you think?
•–• 05:44, 9 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Acagastya: Yes, it seems so but what solutions do we have? In an ideal world, we could have a form which would only post the request if it wasn’t empty. However, I certainly don’t have the skills to do that. Do you have any ideas? [24Cr][talk] 16:23, 9 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I am guessing an HTML comment might help, at least?

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Short article trial

Hi, should we have a hidden category to track the articles published under the trial run? It might be useful in tracking results, although, we probably won't get so many it will be unmanageable. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:02, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

IRC

Hey!!
I want to join IRC, what do you suggest, web client or some installed client? Cheers!! 2006nishan178713t@lk 09:31, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@2006nishan178713: I can’t say which is better but I use IRCCloud on my phone (which is where I do most of my editing). The web client is awkward to use I feel. Personally I dislike IRC for multiple reasons, not least of which is that it isn’t as secure as some would have us believe. I think there’s too much reliance and expectation with IRC. As a steward I gave up on IRC because some users were constantly messaging me, expecting a quick response. I had a very terse discussion with one agitated user who assumed I had ignored them on IRC, when I had in fact been fast asleep, as I was several time zones away from them. Don’t let me put you off it - it is useful for reviewing etc. [24Cr][talk] 12:08, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Cromium:, yep!, some users are quite annoying, Also Wikimedia does have a discord server, why don't we use that server as the primary communication tool between users instead of IRC? It is more modern and faster. Anyways, have a good day. :) 2006nishan178713t@lk 15:11, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@The drywall: At this point it looks like you are trolling. Archiving

Don't archive too many. I know there's a rule for X number of days old, but Pi zero always used to tell me it shortens the list of "latest news" on the front page which he liked to have 10 or more articles to encourage more engagement. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:30, 21 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ah, too late! Well I’d been trying to avoid archiving for a bit but it had reached 15 articles. I guess we could change the rule to something like 12 or 15. [24Cr][talk] 21:32, 21 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
No worries. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:37, 21 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
FYI, I was archiving a few in your absence, making sure the "latest news" didn't get longer than the lead boxes. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:43, 21 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@SVTCobra: Now there are 18 articles listed at top right of the main page. It looks very good without any empty space beneath the list (at least on my phone) and I think it verifies your request to not archive too many. 😊 [24Cr][talk] 11:17, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, but it is a delicate balance. It depends on the text in the Lede 1-5 boxes. It is going to be difficult to write a good rule for it, but as long as we use common sense we should be fine. Oh, and thanks for the work on Donbass->Donbas. We may soon have to address Zelensky->Zelenskyy. Cheers, --SVTCobra 05:48, 30 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
