Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Linking to your en.wp user page
editIf you want that {{w}} template call on your user page to link to your en.wp user page, add a parameter foreign=force
, so it reads
{{w|User:Seemplez|foreign=force|Take notice here.}}

editThe answer to your question, why it hadn't already been deleted. Iirc there was a page with some similar name, but with some difference or other; I forget just what. This one, I had marked as {{notnews}}, and then when it had been around more than four days (several days more, when I got to it) I marked it as {{abandoned}}; that's how most unsuccessful articles get cleared. Any time from 48 hours after tagging it abandoned, supposing it was properly tagged and nothing else happens in the meantime, I could delete it; I hadn't quite gotten to that, so it was a day or more overdue to be deleted. I'd recommend, when you're tagging a page like this for deletion, that you leave in place the {{abandoned}} tag, as removing the tag removes it from the queue. In this case, I just zapped it. --Pi zero (talk) 13:59, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for creating this article. I noticed the article had some critical issues. You can find the issues here. Please address all issues, ask questions if you run into an issue you can't solve, and then submit the article.

Hi Seemplez
editThank you for looking after other articles, and correcting the text. Perhaps you would be interested in automatically receiving notifications of new draft creations, here? Regards, --Gryllida (talk) 20:59, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
- I'll sign up! Seemplez 07:26, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Seemplez,
- Thanks for signing up! I've set up the list page (email), as well as the list page (wiki). Normally these pages list the topics you are interested in; as they are 'any', there is only one category name: 'Developing'. The script will see it and send you a notification shortly.
- Your first e-mail will be a list of what's currently under development in the topics of your interest. The future e-mail messages will only contain newly created submissions.
- To unsubscribe, request deletion of these list pages, and notifications will stop.
- In new drafts the most common things to look out for are:
- freshness that they are about an event that happened within the last 2-3 days (ref)
- grammar
- the first paragraph answering the 5W and an H
- Please let me know if there are any issues with this message delivery. It is designed to encourage the recipient's involvement in helping newcomers, but simply testing the message delivery and reporting bugs would be greatly appreciated!
- Regards, Gryllida (talk) 09:44, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Userspacing articles
editRe your message telling others to request userspacing -- please note, Wikinews is not a web-host, and there needs a very good reason to not delete an article which is abandoned.
•–• 11:29, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Acagastya: Fair enough, I'll remove it. Seemplez 13:44, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- You don't have to delete the comment -- I appreciate you notifying the user. However, when you do recommend userspacing, please think if there is a genuine reason to do that or not.

Links
editHi. I have noted this multiple times, the articles that you submit don't have enough wikilinks -- while I have always wanted a tool which could do that sort of thing -- suggesting what to link, but until then, could you please wikilink more often? Some of the wikilinks for South London police officer Matt Ratana shot in custody centre can be London, BST, UTC, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, North Island, Auckland Police Force, and class B drugs.

- @Acagastya: Ok, I'll bear that in mind. Seemplez 16:31, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. Really appreciate it.

your article
editJust so's you know: I have somewhere I have to be in the physical world in a few minutes, so I was already realizing I didn't have time to complete review of your article right now. I'll be out of the game until probably at least 2200 UTC. (Fortunately, your article now mentions Monday in its lede, so it won't go stale at midnight UTC.) --Pi zero (talk) 17:57, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

- @Bddpaux: Yes, apologies for inactivity. Got caught up in school work but holidays are coming in the next few weeks so hopefully I'll be able to contribute more. Seemplez 21:21, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
@Acagastya: I don't have access to my email at the moment, so unless the topic is of a sensitive nature, could you ask me the question here? Thanks. Seemplez 07:41, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, if you could have a look at local privs request Wikinews:Requests_for_permissions#Acagastya_(talk_·_contribs)_—_Checkuser and Wikinews:Requests_for_permissions#Green_Giant_(talk_·_contribs)_—_Checkuser and later this month, for the ArbCom election, that would be great!
•–• 07:48, 15 July 2021 (UTC)- Oh, correction, ArbCom election will be early next month; not at the end of this month. And also, each project would require at least two CUs, so make sure you comment, if needed, and vote for each candidate.
