Community Service Opportunity? edit

I guess if you don't have the time to supervise a whole mass of low-level criminals, maybe i'll think of a way to orchestrate this function in some more automatic way, ie within the framework that currently exists. I hope having placed this note on top, in my beginner's luck-less way, did not make you miss it altogether.

Wikinews vandal edit

I gave up reverting the vandalism by 24.198.49.225.

I've already asked for an Administrator to help out (I'm assuming you're not an Admin yourself?), both on Wikipedia Vandalism in Progress and on Jimbo Wale's talk page.

The Administrators can just rollback everything this user is doing in one fall swoop, right?

Cheers,

Weather update edit

I am just about ready to post a new graphic for world surface conditions under the weather section. However, it appears that I can only update the two-column section underneath the single-column header and timestamp of the last update. In other words, I can no longer update where it says "November 29 Surface conditions".

I want to remove the two columns below the header section and update the single column section (the one with the "November 29 Surface conditions" text) to have a large thumbnail graphic with two links underneath it for Fahrenheit and Celsius versions of the full map.

Could you add an "Update" link to the single-column Weather section or otherwise make it possible for non-Admins to edit this section?

Thanks.

Spits edit

MacGyverMagic here. Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been on Wikinews for a while. "Spits" is a free newspaper in the Netherlands. It's not the best of sources, but I knew the information to be correct at the time. Also, I hoped there'd be more editing on the article after I started it... Hi Lyellin,

Have you read anything about voting for the Wikinews logo?

I checked on the logo proposals page and there was a mention of a vote happening sometime in December, but I was unable to find out who is organizing the vote or what page the vote is being held on.

The current logo is cute in its own special way :), but it's kind of worn out its welcome at this point, don't you think?

I realize there are a million and one important things to spend time on, but the logo is displayed prominently while using Wikinews, so I thought I would ask your opinion about it.

Cheers,

Main page layout improvements edit

Hi Lyellin,

I set up a sandbox for the Main Page to illustrate an improved layout that addresses some of the issues a number of our readers have had with navigation and readability.

Please check it out and let me know what you think on the Main Page sandbox discussion page. (I also listed some of the reasons for switching to this new layout on that page.)

If we can reach a consensus on these changes, either you or another Administrator would need to help merge in the changes, because some of the edits shown in the sandbox require changes on the main page, which is protected.

Happy holidays.

Regards,

DV 20:41, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Please see Main_Page/Sandbox3 and Main_Page/WideSandbox3. They're a pair that link to each other via the monitor icons at the top of the navigation bar. Ilya has started a discussion on the wide version's talk page. — DV 08:51, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Lyellin, one other thing - as a note to you in your role as Admin, both of the Sandbox3 pages show an example of a more compact version of the site banner. I am hoping you or one of the other Admins will consider using this new version on the MediaWiki page which hosts this notice, as the current version uses more space than is necessary at the top of every page.
For your convenience I have placed the proposed changes in a template called "SitenoticeSandbox", which expands out to the following appearance:

Feedback/chat: Water cooler - Wikinews mailing list - #wikinews on irc.freenode.net - Site news

It's a small thing, but the couple of lines of space saved by this new design make a difference.
Regards,

Reply edit

Thanks for your response to my e-mail list comment. I do wonder why there is an e-mail list, if the replies are made on Wikinews?

I'm glad to hear there is main page re-working underway; I will avoid getting involved in it then.

The water cooler/village pump can be a central resource for users to ask questions of other contributors, such as "can someone help me do X?" But if you look at the w:Wikipedia:Village pump you will see it has a collection of sections which clearly and quickly help a user to locate the information/support/FAQ s/he might be interested in near the top. It also allows users interested in helping out to monitor specific pages which are dedicated, rather than a long general page.

Users looking to find answers should be looking for a FAQ, first. Many questions are not unique, and Wikinews has a FAQ. That should not be on the water cooler, but linked from it. Beyond that, most questions are of the "how do I X in media wiki" (technical), "can someone do X" (assistance), "what are the rules about X" (policy), and "can we do X" (proposals) varieties, and should be answerable on or through the water cooler.

Other uses for the water cooler are to arrange social events, entertainments, group communication, and basically help contributors get along with each other.

None of this addresses the question of Policy.

Not only does Wikinews not have any available policy, yesterday when I looked there was not even a Wikinews:About, which is linked from every page in the site. There is not a policy about making policy; who can vote, what constitutes a "passing" policy (50.01%? 66% 80%?), alternative methods such as non-opposed consensus, how long a policy may be considered before it must pass/fail... These are fundamental decision-making policies.

I believe these should be addressed directly. - Amgine 17:56, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Regarding the Water cooler/Village pump - The table provides links to sections of the Village pump on Wikipedia, not separate pages. It merely breaks the conversations into topic areas.
Regarding the FAQ - guidelines, as opposed to policies, are reasonable in a FAQ, and can reach consensus quickly.
I have looked at the polls. 3 of the 5 polls have zero entries on their discussion page. However, even disregarding the lack of effort to discuss the policies in question and the extreme age of some of these polls, there are no policies in place to actually decide a poll. Any policy "decision" could be easily contested on this basis alone.
Due to this lack of policy some users, such as myself, are not writing articles. After Ilya moved my articles "for policy reasons", I chose to stop submitting articles until there are minimal guidelines. And I'm still looking for the policy used as the basis for moving my articles. - Amgine 20:48, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Check my article please edit

Look my new article: South American intellectuals support arrested FARC leader. It seems polemic because the source is POV. But I think the news is unabiased and reliable. Anyway, I think other opinions is important. Also check my English. Thank you very much. -- Carlosar 03:02, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

That time of the year again edit

This is a form letter that I am putting on the talk page of every admin: As you may know, we are approaching April 1. In many cultures, this is a time for pranksters to pull w:April Fools jokes on others. Because of the ease of editing, wiki projects tend to fall prey to these types of pranks rather easily. Let this be a reminder to us all to keep a special lookout for hoaxes, rampant fiction and other random acts of content vandalism between now and April 2. Good luck, and hopefully not too much damage will be done. -- Davodd | Talk 07:01, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

new convention edit

It's generaly thought that it's better to provide internal links (where possible) rather than external links (so as to keep people on wikinews for longer). However i really wouldnt go so far as to lable it a convention. Some people do it, others dont. Really i probably shouldnt have changed it, since we use a 'whoever wrote the article first sets the conventions' rule - but i did; feel free to change it back should you like to. ~The bellman | Smile 07:36, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hey Lyellin, you can blame this one on me! In the end after some descussion we decided to decide on a case by case method, here's 3 (fictatious) scenarios:
  • An article deals with a riot in Dunshanbe, Tajikistan - both places should link to Wikipedia.
  • An article deals with rural de-population in Ennistimon, County Clare, Ireland, - the first two places should link to wikipedia, but Ireland should link to wikinews Ireland.
  • An article deals with a new state law in Massachusetts, United States both should link to Wikinews pages.
Hopefully eventually Wikinews will have thousends of regional pages (county and state level). On these we can have a banner such as This page covers news relating to Orange County, Florida in the United States So that when a person reads an article relating to Orage County, Flordia they can click through to the Wikinews page on Orange County; see its location and other relevent stories and still be able to get to the wikipedia article with minimal effort. So basically a reader would be never more than 2 clicks from a places 1) Location, 2) Relevent Articles and 3) Encyclopic entry. → CGorman (Talk) 16:12, 2 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Moldova edit

That's fine! It took me quite some time to actually find the correct name in Romanian, because unfortunately all of these Russian news sources use Russified names, but since I'm from Romania (and not from Moldova), I had no idea of the actual names in Romanian, because they never make it here in the Romanian media (as you probably know, the relationships between Romania and Moldova aren't all that great). As part of Country of the Week, I'm also going to write some more articles on Moldova from a Moldovan Romanian-language news source , azi.md. Cheers, Ronline 00:29, 10 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Responding on the article talk page edit

Hi,Lyellin,

If you can assure me I won't be blocked for responding there , I'll do it. I just don't want to be directly in Amgine's way on anything for the time being; so my plan was not to participate on talk pages he is involved in for the time being. I really wish I hadn't even noticed the remarks about Australia and Simeon; and I really only told admins because I thought you admins would want to know about it; but, maybe I was wrong about that as I have been wrong about other procedural matters. Do you think its a good time for me to offer an apology directly to Amgine about the water cooler stuff? Paulrevere2005 18:44, 11 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

An invitation... edit

I'm attempting to start up a new edition of Wikinews, one with a simpler user contributions system at m:Wikinews/Start a new edition#Open English. The goals of this project would be to simplify the process of submitting articles such that anyone with no knowledge of the Mediawiki software or the Wikimedia projects culture can easily understand and submit an article, and immediately see it on the main page developing articles section.

If you would be interested in supporting this project I would be pleased if you would sign up at the Meta page.

Why Please? edit

hi tom

may i please ask why you corrected my change to the article of the UCC's progress on recognition of gay marriage? this article was in the search and i wanted to post a link to it on our church website, since this is surely something to share and celebrate. but while reading it i saw the statement that the United Church of Christ was "the largest Christian denomination to do so. UCC has over 6,000 congregations and 1.3 million members."

but that's not true. our canadian ucc is 3,000,000, and we've a long long history on this issue.

i knew of wikipedia, but this article introduced me to wikinews. wow! what a wonderful concept.

so i thought to add my 2 bits worth.

if i have not followed a protocol, could you kindly advise me? i certainly did not mean to be meddlesome of troublesome, just to share and correct a small error.

thanks

Jock, I believe you are referring to the "You have to ask..." COmment? If so, I reverted that because it is against our Point of View Policies. The Comment didn't add anything to the article, instead all it did was basically set up a certain point of view regarding the news. In effect, it was not news, it was editorializing. Answer to talk page edit

Hi there, I didn't see your question on the bombings talk page till today, sorry not to have answered. If you're still keen to know, Friends House is on the Euston Road opposite Euston, so not very near Kings Cross but very close to Tavistock Square, as in it's the closest bus stop heading South :) We heard the explosion and some of the first witnesses got here (we opened the building for the stranded) and told my colleagues about the bus which I then reported to Dan100 on his talk page, about ten/twenty minutes ahead of the first witness report on BBC London Live. ClareWhite 08:31, 15 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Our's is the main headquarters and it has a very large and dramatic Meeting room, there are lots of others round London so you may not have come to FH, it may well have been Westminster Meeting if it was central. Free samples are available at our website and there'll be quite an extensive report next week about the work during the bombings, otherwise it's full of interesting news, we tend to write quite a lot about US Friends too :) ClareWhite 13:12, 15 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Quaker portal edit

I took Ilya's comments on the talk page as just trying to prevent over-enthusiastic Wikinewsies butting in on pages with arguments about newsworthiness etc, but I took it as an assumption - and have included in the proposal - that all portals must be inclusive of anyone who wants to be involved. It would be great if you could help develop the Quaker portal! I hoped that Britain Yearly Meeting and Young Friends World Gathering would give us plenty of material to kick off with. Police have punishment and control authority; I have neither; nor do I wish to. The lower case, "basketball," is closer to policy. Let's keep that. I'll mark the upper case for deletion. BTW, are categories only related via the markup on a sub-cat's page?
