Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

For starters........
editHi! Welcome to English Wikinews. We try very hard to be welcoming here.....we really do. Thanks for the article you submitted! One heck of a great first effort!! It does need some tweaking and I'm sorry I don't have time to help at the moment. Keep at it!! Journalistic writing is great to help improve one's writing. A simple, non-sarcastic piece of advice here: Don't marry your articles. Get it, write it, submit it, move on! (I'm not discouraging you from tweaking an article that failed first attempt at publication, though.) --Bddpaux (talk) 17:58, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

- Hi Md Tanbir Islam
- Done-- this story has been published, by Green Giant, as Bangladesh reports five new deaths due to COVID-19, a daily highest.
- A few notes about this:
-
- There should be a clear, within last 2-3 days, event, which is discussed in the headline and the first paragraph. (WN:Freshness)
- If more events occurred, the story should be taken off the review queue, updated, and re-added again. This should be done instantly, without a delay. (WN:Focus)
- The first paragraph should answer the 5W and an H, briefly. (WN:5W)
- Yes, the sources need to be filled in. Without misprints in URLs. Without exceptions. This is really difficult, but is absolutely necessary. Sources should be sorted by date. Fresher sources first. (sources section)
- Some of the older information may need to be removed, as it is no longer relevant. As Green Giant said, the press releases from March 30 and 31 were no longer relevant, and needed to be removed. (content guide)
- More details can be found in the edit history. Please start here, and keep clicking 'Newer edit →', looking at each change, until the finish. This will help you with your future articles.
- Sorry for the delay with reviewing: unfortunately, one of the reviewers is busy, for nearly two weeks now, reviewing one long interview.
- Thank you for the original report. It was really interesting for me to learn of first deaths in Bangladesh; I didn't know of the situation before.
- Please write again when new important events occur.
- Keep up the great work!
