There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours. Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

Places to go, people to meet Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews! Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it! It is recommended you read the article guide before starting. Also make sure to check the list of recently created articles to see if your story hasn't already been reported upon.

Would you be interested in helping to edit new drafts added by others? Wikinews is looking for volunteers with this, to expedite the peer review process, and to help you gain news writing practice. This is easier than writing a complete story. :) And it may help you with your future writing.

US removes preferential treatment for Hong Kong

I see that you made some changes. Some key concerns remain, though. The "polarity" of things is often unclear, that is, it's unclear whether they're positive or negative (and toward whom); and the nature of various technical measures is unclear, which also relates to positivity/negativity. The headline, for example, has been improved from

"US removes preferential treatment for Hong Kong"

to

"Trump removes Hong Kong's special status"

but, removing special status... is that something that improves the treatment, or degrades it? More restrictive or less, more favorable or less? I.e., positive or negative? (We'll want to make that "US President Trump", but that's not the main point here.) Similar difficulties apply in the lede and other passages, such as the second paragraph (which has been adjusted to state the circumstances of the remark). I also mentioned, the lede seems a big over-long and over-detailed.

I realize the sorts of things I'm asking for are fairly deep, intensively engaging the meanings of the passages. Truthfully, if the changes needed had been shallow, I might have been able to do them myself in my role as an independent reviewer, rather than requesting revision to the article. But, I do feel we would need to improve these aspects of the article, to produce an article that informs the reader. --Pi zero (talk) 05:09, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

@Pi zero: Eliminating special status is a reduction in treatment and is negative. I've included a link to Wikipedia in the press release, which should help readers to understand it.

Death toll of Aegean Sea earthquake rises to 116; over 1,035 casualties reported

I really wish we'd managed to review this sooner; on review I found some difficulties with it that were outside my reviewer's purview to address, and we now have limited time to revise and re-review the article unless some new development can be used to freshen it up (I remark further on this in the review comments). Please see feedback below:

• In the first paragraph answer to "when" (what date) is missing. (WN:5W)
• Also, passive voice is present in the first paragraph. Please reword. Please indicate who made the announcement. This is indicated later in the story, but passive voice is discouraged anywhere in the story, and this is also answer to 'Who' (WN:5W).
