Main lead

Well you can do if you want but this version isn't centered, doesnt stay within its white background and doesnt have a description. Thanks for adding the categories to this, and for your guidance - what's the policy for acronyms in headlines?

I started off with a short snappy title for this article but someone decided to replace my acronyms with words resulting in a long title - I added the acronyms back in as I feel that this is what people will search for. The next redirect, by someone else, was to Graffiti vandal banned from top deck of London buses under Anti-Social Behaviour legislation which is just plain misleading & sensationalist (as the Order applies to all of England and Wales , and not only to upstairs on buses but any public place).

According to our style guide, it says: "Avoid jargon and meaningless acronyms — Avoid uncommon technical terms, and when referring to a country or organization, use its full name rather than acronym, unless the acronym is more common than the full name (ex: NASA, CIA, AIDS) or length is prohibitive."

I see User:Zachary has moved the title back to "Transport for London wins first Anti-Social Behaviour Order against graffiti vandal", and removed the acronyms. I suggest to keep the title like this because it's been reverted almost over three times, and the style guide policy recommends not to use acronyms. Good to know someone's actually keeping track of the portals. So many of them aren't updated for months at a time. What do you think of possibly merging the provincial portals into clusters? Comments pages

Hi. I had been creating an empty comments page along with each of my articles because I thought the "This page is for commentary on the news..." text that appears after someone leaves a comment is a lot nicer than the "This is for rants about the article" message that shows up initially (I think "rants" has a negative connotation for most people). I voted delete on WN:DR because your article is from Oct 3. We cannot publish old news items, it needs to go on the main page first so people can read it. It also wouldn't make sense publishing it today, because the news is from Oct. 3. I suggest you find a recent news item on Nortel and write about it, I will help to publish it if you want me to. But we thought that the award was awarded on Oct 3. If this article is reporting on how they were awarded twice then it will be considered encyclopedic or advertising. This smells a bit fishy. Coming along after more than a week and pulling some bureaucratic number which - "by the way" - prevents correct and balanced data to be published on wikinews. A request

Hi again, I saw that you are editing right now. Could I ask you to look at this article and see if I contaminated it with my American propaganda. Particularly, look at the way the article was in this version 22:12 and see if that was more or less POV than the current US denies plans for attack on Iran amid report of hunt for evidence against Iran. The title at 22:12 was "US interrogators complain of "sickening" pressure for evidence on Iran." I thought I was doing this contributor a favor by expanding an article that was hardly publishable, but they thought differently. Why I switched back to the Unger story

Hi, I switched back to the Unger story and I wanted to tell you why. Wikinews was originally started as a site for "Citizen Journalism." In the few months I have been on here, it mostly has appeared to me to be a blog. Looking at the stories that were written about the site, it was originally designed for us to go out and write stories ourselves. What the site appears to have become is a place where news junkies take MSM stories, whittle them down, and post them as original stories. That's more what blogs are designed to do.

The Craig Unger piece is ours. Nobody else's. We own it, and if people want a fairly in depth synopsis of what his new book about (he's no small potatoes, but a NYT best seller) we are offering them something they can't get anywhere else. The Black Sea oil spill? I can guarantee you nobody is coming to Wikinews to see how we took some MSM media stories, cherry picked some info out of them, and then posted it as citizen journalism.

I don't mind the blog stories because they make good filler. But they are nowhere near on par with original stories that we ourselves research and write, and they should never be seen that way. Otherwise, Wikinews becomes a blog, and a not very compelling one. So, I switched back to the Unger story as the featured story because it's about a very timely topic, about a best-selling author and major contributing editor, NYU Law fellow, who is currently on book tour.

The blog stories are uninspiring to contributors. We should be taking more risks at citizen journalism on this site and showing other people what they can accomplish. I feel I have been doing that. The blog stories say, "You can read the news and whittle it down for us." Why would somebody want to do that when that on Wikinews when they can do that on Wikipedia and have more readers?

At times I feel this project should do some soul-searching, because taking MSM media stories and turning them into shorter versions isn't "citizen journalism." I'm one of the few on this site where most of my work is, indeed, the work Wikinews was originally envisioned to do. --David Shankbone 06:45, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Disney cats

Are you sure "Walt Disney Company" wouldn't have been the better one to keep? It covers all of their subsidiaries and including movies studios, tv networks etc, and can be used for business news as well. "Walt Disney World" only covers the the resort complex in Florida. Well, both have a use. Walt Disney World is needed for articles at their Florida park, whereas WDC could work for their other ventures.

I presume you moved this into the Wikinews namespace because of NPOV concerns. If you have concerns, please address them yourself instead of banning this article from the mainspace. I moved it to the Wikinews: space not because I wanted to remove it off the main page. I just thought it would look nicer with the "Wikinews:" in front. Sure, we can publish this on the main page, there is not a problem with that. My only problem with this page is that we should keep the summaries of the articles NPOV, not POV as we are not meant to be a POV website.

<a little offtopic> I understand David's editorials aren't totally NPOV, but that does not mean we can make exceptions to have POV in other articles like this one, as that is stepping out of our purpose (To present up-to-date, relevant, newsworthy and entertaining content without bias). Category:New religious movements

This category has been stable for quite some time at Wikipedia. I was unaware and no one notified me about the deletion discussion here. I had left a note at the deleting Admin but got no response. Why is a category that has existed at Wikipedia since June 2004 not deemed appropriate here? Can we please have another deletion discussion so I can raise these points, since I was not notified about the last one, even though I was the creator of that category? The third lead should be the one that has the most human interest, the best written story that day perhaps or a quirky story - whatever people feel is most likely to get readers reading, besides the day's top breaking news.

It is news, and I think that you might be the one who is biased for deleting it. I would be interested to know why you deleted it. why did you delete it?

You are supposed to bring up any debate, especially about deleting an article on the talk page first, or inform the author first - before you delete something.

The article that you deleted did not fit the requirements for a speedy deletion. That guidline can be found here: WN:SD

The policy you cited as the reason for deleting the article (although it would still be unjustified even if it had broken the policy) contains no applicable statements to the article you deleted.

It did not fit the requirements for even posting a deletion tag. And there was no deletion tag when you deleted it.

I also have realized that I could have written it better - more "neutrally" one might say. For example, rather than saying "the man lied to the police officers, saying the customer had 'shoplifted' and that the customer had swung on him first." it would have been better if I had said "According to the employee, the soup was not a free sample, and the customer had tried to swing on him first." I think that would resolve any conflict there would be over the story. I cannot, as of now, produce the police report, because it has not been released, but as soon as it is released, I will for sure type it up and post it on the collaboration page, so that other editors can see it. This page is in the Wikinews namespace but it actually was intended as a normal article last April Fools day.
