Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

The article you started has been published. Cheers, SVTCobra 18:24, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for all your help with that article. I know it was really ugly when it started but I'm going to use some of the lessons from this to try and make better articles. Dr vulpes (talk) 18:27, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, while you were correct that article is dated to last May, as are its sources, this article is not a standard prepared story. Usually, prepared stories are focused on some specific event in the future, even if the exact date is not yet planned, like Wikinews:Story preparation/US Senate votes on Lower Energy Costs Act (which was itself "gatwicked" — and that is an entire technique itself). The article you tagged, however, is not focused on any future event and is being stored for use as background if new developments happen with the image.

That said, @Ixfd64 (who authored it) might know if it's still needed; if it's not, it should still be deleted. Thanks, Heavy Water (talk) 17:32, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, could you spell check my article on the expulsion of illegal immigrants from the United States?´. --Jusaset (talk) 04:10, 12 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

It’s not my area of expertise but I’ll take a quick look and see if I can help. Dr vulpes (talk) 04:52, 12 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hey @Jusaset yeah sorry I can't help you. Maybe try and find another editor. Dr vulpes (talk) 05:31, 12 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Scientists release updated human genome

edit

Hi Dr vulpes,

Like many I have an interest in the human genome. Also, like many, I am sure, I am totally confused by what it is, and whether the progress scientists have made are really as significant as we have been led to believe.

I just wanted to tell you that your initial article at Scientists release updated human genome - first article not approved(as opposed to Scientists release updated human genome-second article not approved) was one of the most, if not the most, illuminating article I have ever read on the human genome project. I had no idea the the initial findings were based on the study of only 13 individuals from the United States and Europe. It is amazing that such a small sample can provide so much information that the medical field relies on. With this knowledge I can now carry out my own limited research to see how many of women were included in the studies, and whether medicine can rely on the results to help women, as well as men, benefit from medical advances based on these studies.

Again, a big thank you! Ottawahitech (talk) 21:58, 13 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dr vulpes,

I hope you plan to continue to develop US Supreme Court unanimously rules in favor of transgender asylum seeker. The US Supreme Court has been in the news a lot because they seem to be on a tear to change many long term traditions, I think. I find this case particularly interesting after seeing somewhere that Brazil was the first to [transgender place holder].

I found this in case you are interested: SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES Syllabus SANTOS-ZACARIA AKA SANTOS-SACARIAS v. GARLAND CERTIORARI TO THE UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE FIFTH CIRCUIT. Cheers Ottawahitech (talk) 19:51, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
