edit[1] you can read Hungarian?
- 'coz u removed stuff as unsourced, when two of the sources are in Hungarian. have you been able to determine that the 'unsourced' stuff is not sourced from the Hungarian sources? –Doldrums(talk) 21:55, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- I am attempting to do so now, but cannot find a means of translation. DragonFire1024 22:00, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- there're a couple of things to try - ask the user who added the statement which source supports the statement and to highlight the particular line in the article. u can then look thro' babel or ask people on hu projects to translate that particular line for you. the important thing is to let the user who added this statement know that u're looking for confirmation. keep in mind that is quite possible that local sources can report details that international sources may not. to simply discard all such stuff even without making an attempt to see if it is valid will simply make wikinews a poorer source. –Doldrums(talk) 22:17, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Attribution
editRe: Image:Delta_before_after.png – I'm not asking for attribution for the copyrighted work within the illustration; I'm asking for attribution for the illustration itself. Anyone can just grab a screenshot and post it; I took the time to arrange and layout two screenshots and two logos in the same image. It took considerable time and effort, and I certainly want credit for that. --Omaryak 05:30, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- Again, I am not claiming credit for the copyrighted work within the image. I am claiming credit for the arrangement and layout of the images contained within. Not to mention, the design of the screenshot. It is not a standard operating system window, it is something I measured precisely. --Omaryak 05:33, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- Taking a screenshot is really no different than taking a photo of something in the real world. Cropping images in a specific way to aid in the news reporting process allows use of the images to fall under fair use and ensures against a violation of copyright law. Because I have chosen a specific portion of the Web site to display and not its entirety, and the image is being used in a news reporting context, I am perfectly within my rights. I chose what part of the Web site to display and how to display it. It was also my idea to create a before-and-after comparison. Please respect that at least that aspect of the image is entirely original and my work. --Omaryak 05:41, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- Apparently you fail to grasp that though the images contained within the image are copyrighted, their selection and arrangement is my original work. You also fail to grasp that fair use law allows for selections to be taken for news reporting and educational purposes, a purpose for which the Wikinews local uploading system was expressly created.--Omaryak 05:51, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- I did not make any changes or alterations. I provided an excerpt, which is perfectly permissible and in fact encouraged where it comes to fair use. --Omaryak 05:57, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

No hard feelings. I ended up voting for the image's deletion anyway because the images that ended up in the article convey the rebranding without sparking a debate over attribution. I do hope to contribute similar images in the future, though, so hopefully we can come to a mutual agreement about fair use and attribution. I'm talking to two other users who deleted my contributions for similar reasons to yours. --Omaryak 21:42, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

- <Lcarsdata> DragonFire_aw: When you get back is it possible for you to upload the new map you did over the top of my map. That is required to comply with the GFDL.
- <Lcarsdata> IIRC
- <Lcarsdata> It would be better for you to do it since then you would be attributed in the file history.

Supernova image
editHi, I just want to give you a heads up. I uploaded that same image from the same place to Commons and they speedy deleted it. After requesting more information as to why they Tom wrote me this:
- Regarding the deletion of this image, note that on the bottom of the NASA webpage that you pulled it from (here) there is a link to the original authors (here) at the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The image is also credited to them (NASA/CXC), which means it is their work. Their image use policy (here) clearly states "The images on this web site may be used for non-commercial educational and public information purposes", which basically means it can't be used here since those are stringent usage restrictions. While the Commons itself is noncommercial and educational, the goal of this project is to create a repository of images that anyone (including commercial and non-educational) can use for any reason. See the Commons' policy regarding these types of images. Also, I meant to post a notice on your page immediately after deleting them, but I became distracted, so I'm sorry if I upset you. Thanks. --Tom (talk - email) 21:00, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Western Maryland

- Yeah, now I see that article. A published news piece would have to move the process to where-ever that process might end up... otherwise, i don't even want to talk about it. -Edbrown05 04:45, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

backlog
editI mean who cares? Archive what? it already is, i suppose without even archiving it. all that is is protection, i think there is enough of that around here. fuk archive, we already know a news story it dead after two days, so... i don't understand archiving.... does it accomplish anything? (sorry, i'm picking on you)-Edbrown05 10:19, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
- does archiving accomplish a thing other than page protection? and if that is all it does.... what a waste of time. -Edbrown05 10:21, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
- Vandalism DragonFire1024 10:22, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
- Archiving means less to watch for in the way of vandalism. Articles may be dead after two day to all but historians... and trolls. There's too much scope for things like vandalism and well-meaning but inappropriate edits when we don't implement the archiving policy. Besides, it stops Commons from deleting images without telling us about it. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:27, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Wikinews Video
editHeya!
I see you have previously shown some interest in Wikinews Video Edition and, need your help. As you may already know, the projet is is need of assistance - we have finished all the graphics and need to start actually brainstorming ideas for the first news story. We will cover one news story and, will cover it with much depth - the story will go for 15-20 minutes. We are looking for something which is not of direct interest to the media (ie. tax increases or politics) but rather, a heartfelt or deep story. Could you please help to collaborate and brainstorm here.
thanx, USer:symode09
Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo...
editHi, that is a great piece of OR. Action reporting if you will. Most OR is of pre-planned events, so this was enjoyable and refreshing (the reporting, not the fire, obviously). My only critique is you first word Currently. Although, I am sure it was true, it might be better to use a phrase like As of this writing or perhaps state when exactly it was. Great reporting nonetheless. --SVTCobra 02:35, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationales
editPlease note that removing the template without providing a detailed fair use rationale will not prevent non-free images lacking rationales from being deleted. Statements of copyright are not fair use rationales. If you continue to remove tags without supplying detailed fair use rationales in their steads, your editing privileges will be revoked. Editors who facilitate copyright violations (which is what a non-free image without a fair use rationale is) are not helping the project. Uncle G 07:32, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- This is not a detailed fair use rationale. See w:Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline for what a fair use rationale must contain. Uncle G 07:50, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

editThe image was marked as nosource for 6 days and wasn't edited, which is why it was deleted. The source was this page which returns a 404; even if it once existed the license of the image can't be verified if the page no longer exists, unfortunately. The uploader was User:Dbenbenn, who received a note on his talk page 6 days ago saying the image need a new source, but one wasn't added; thus it had to be deleted. Hi, I wrote a reply to your comment about the redirect, there is a bit of a mess now, as there are two independent articles kicking around. Woman disclosed by newspaper in sex tape found dead (older version), and Woman disclosed by newspaper in sex tape commits suicide (new, although missing history). I am waiting to see if DPL picks the new one up properly. Any suggestions how to fix? --Zven 07:35, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- The redirect was deleted...so the old is the original article that should not be changed. The new one is the new one you would work on. :) DragonFire1024 07:37, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- When I created the new article the reverted redirect still existed as the article had not yet been deleted, as I distinctly recall seeing the redirect wikitext. The original article probably could have been redirected as it was still current in Portal:New Zealand which it is most relevant too. --Zven 08:50, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- There are still two copys floating around at Portal:New Zealand, the old version Woman disclosed by newspaper in sex tape found dead needs deletion. I am still of the viewpoint that the redirect of the article title was a better approach as it was an ammendment to the cause of death. --Zven 22:47, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- They are 2 different articles...thats how they are supposed to be. One is a new article the other is an old article. DragonFire1024 22:58, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- And the second one needs to be rewritten to conform to new news...not a copy and paste of the old article. DragonFire1024 23:00, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Can you point me to Wikinews policy about this issue please either in the Wikinews:Water cooler or other. --Zven 02:35, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
