Please note that "Editor at Large" is only a nickname, and this user holds no official position on wikinews.

Nor is she a fat male. She is, in fact, just one very small user; and likes to copyedit.

Welcome

Editor at Large, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!–Doldrums(talk) 15:15, 20 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

username

edit

hi, just wanted to let you know that the username u've picked suggests that you have a formal position on Wikinews. such usernames can be misleading to other editors amd are discouraged (see Wikinews:Username and Wikipedia:Username). u can request your username to be changed here.

I don't think that at all. DragonFire1024 07:17, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
as you might well know, "Editor at large" is a widely used formal position in news organisations. so i think there is some potential for confusion if a reader or new user gets a response from the "Editor at Large", especially since the form and capitalization of the username is also formal. i would suggest you change it, but feel free to take an opinion from other users (DragonFire gives us his opinion above, but not a rationale), perhaps at WN:ALERT. another alternative is a disclaimer of sorts on you user and talk pages. so, think it over. –Doldrums(talk) 08:07, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was in no way confused with this name. I never had a thought in my mind that is was an issue. Since we do not have a formal position of that name, I don't see the problem. DragonFire1024 08:10, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
the username makes it appear that we do have a formal position of that name, and this user has been entrusted with the position. that is the confusion it creates. Misleading usernames include names that imply the user is an admin or other official figure on Wikipedia, or of the Wikimedia Foundation(w:Wikipedia:Username). the test is not whether DragonFire is confused by it or not, the test is whether there is a reasonable possibility of confusion by an average user. –Doldrums(talk) 08:16, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Brianmc suggests another option - retain username but change signature to something less troublesome. and gives us some more food for thought. –Doldrums(talk) 08:44, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
just a suggestion, how do you like signing with some variant of "Ed. at large"? feel free to post to the noticeboard to get a sense of what others think about it. the other option, as i've said before, is to make it clear on your user and talk page that this is just a name and not a position. –Doldrums(talk) 09:37, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aint never heard of an "Editor at Large" position. --72.130.208.225 08:27, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

listen harder. or try Google. –Doldrums(talk) 08:44, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have not got a prob with this name, mainly because, I know this user has a few accounts on other projects, (have ran across his Commons Delete button in the past... ;)) Keep the name, maybe add a note on your userpage saying Doldrums concerns. This has kind of spread across various talk pages so I will reply here... the variant "Ed. at large" I'm not sure about as people already call me "Ed" occasionally and I am actually female; unfortunately "Editor at Large" makes people think of a fat man when I am a (slender) woman! At any rate, E@L is a nickname that was used often on wp, and though slightly cryptic I suppose I could use that. I also have no problem with adding a disclaimer of sorts on my user and talk pages saying I hold no official position, etc., if that will help clear things up. I'd prefer to keep my sig the same as my username because I firmly believe in making it as easy as possible for people to find and recognise you, and if I use E@L people will start looking for me under that name and won't associate my actual username with me as much. Then again, as on Wikipedia I could create user & talk pages for User:E@L (currently not a usable name) and redirect them to my talk page. I would prefer to just add disclaimers and keep the rest nice and simple, but I understand if that isn't enough here and I'll change my sig if concensus deems it necessary. — Editor at Large talk 18:17, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

disclaimers on user and talk pages are good enough for me. and since it looks like other people are not unduly concerned about this, that shld settle the matter and we can all go back to editing at large. so welcome once again to Wikinews, Editor at Large! and hope you have a good time here. –Doldrums(talk) 19:08, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
