If there are new developments covered in news media that makes this a news event, then excerpts of the letter can be used in support of such an article. Without context, the letter is just not news. Hey.
I know we don't get along well, like...at all, but I'm leaving these notes for Danish people who may be interested in starting a national chapter. I know you're not living in Denmark right now but I figured it would still be of some interest to you. Here's the note someone kindly translated for me.
Jeg kan se at du er aktiv på den engelske Wikipedia, og at du er fra Danmark. I skrivende stund, diskuterer vi på landsbybrønden et nyt forslag, om at starte en national afdeling, der vil blive kaldet Wikimedia Danmark. Hvis du er interesseret i at bidrage med noget tid til at få startet afdelingen, kan du skrive dit navn på denne side hos meta. Tak for din tid! Mike Halterman (talk) 08:13, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I cannot commit any more time to Wiki-projects. There are those who say I should cut back the amount of time I already spend on Wikinews and take care of more important matters in meatspace. Cheers, --SVTCobra 17:43, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

But it looks like WM DK will be taking off so I'm excited about that. Mike Halterman (talk) 22:32, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I am sorry if you feel that not knowing what music I like (or whatever) is a hindrance to our ability to work together. You are perceptive, though. Not many have picked up on the fact that I have lived in Denmark. I will share with you that I was not born there and I am an American citizen. French vs English
Hi SVTCobra! Re this move. Creche is British English as well as, presumably, French. Kinderdagverblijf in Flemish. Are we after US English (center rather than centre, theater rather than theatre), writer's English or localised English on Wikinews. (If it's one of the latter, creche is the word ;o) I know en:WP's rules on these things, but I'm new here so I'm still learning the ropes! All advice - even if just a link to a startlingly obvious policy page I should've found myself - gratefully received :o) Redvers (talk) 14:32, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- I consulting WP before changing it. Crèche is defined only as a French word. If there had been an article, I would not have changed it. Cheers. --SVTCobra 14:52, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- The WP article says Crèche... is a French word that means day care. In English it may mean: Day care center (especially in some British Commonwealth countries), an organisation of adults who take care of children in place of their parents... so I still think you're wrong ;o) but I'm happy to go with your advice. Is there a Wikinews version of en:WP's English variants guideline? Thanks again and sorry to pester you! Redvers (talk) 14:57, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

- "Crèche" is not like keeping the spelling of the writer's English, imo. For example, it is not like "colour" versus "color". "Crèche" is a word that is without meaning to a great deal of the English-speaking world as well as to many who have English as a second language. Therefore, I argue for "day care" which is a term understood by all. --SVTCobra 01:20, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- First off, this is a word in English, though it is often spelt "creche" instead of "crèche", like many anglicized words with accents and the like. SVTCobra is right in that this isn't a commonly used word, so instead of linking it to Wikipedia, you should link it to Wiktionary. Just use "wikt:" instead of "w:" in the wikilink. Creche is defined there, in all its uncomplicated glory: there are just a few lines per definition. Wiktionary is often better for simple but specific definitions, whereas a link to Wikipedia is better for extended explanations of a general topic. I see nothing wrong with the use of this word if it is wiktied. Gopher65talk 01:46, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, you are right, Gopher. And I did not go so far as changing it throughout the article. I simply changed it in the title and added "day care center" in parenthesis. For better or worse, the speakers of US-English do outnumber the speakers of UK-English, and "crèche" (with or without the accent) simply has no meaning here. --SVTCobra 01:58, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Russia ends counter terrorism operation in Chechnya
Hi, SVTCobra! You left a comment on the talk page of Russia ends counter terrorism operation in Chechnya concerning NPOV. It seems difficult for me to find a "general" Chechen expression for the situation (because I do not know where to find in published news articles official or inofficial views other than the one of the Chechen local president which is quoted a lot (and basically coincides with the Russian view point)). Maybe you have any further idea? Regards, --Angela H. (talk) 09:02, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

A penny for your thoughts
Okay, not really, but I am requesting your participation in the following Water Cooler Discussion: OR and Broadcast report. The discussion involves the need for specific policy concerning how Original Reporting relates to information recieved from a broadcast report of an event. This can include both news-style reports and non-news reports, such as a sporting event. Thanks and again, please share your thoughts on this so we can get as many people involved as possible, especially since this relates to an important topic such as OR. —Calebrw (talk) 05:18, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

- Generally, we avoid using "today" in place of the day of week, as that is frequently ambiguous due to time zone differences (i.e. it could be Thursday in the Americas but already Friday in Australia). Tempodivalse [talk] 00:26, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Incorrect move summary
Actually, you're a bit confused about voices. "is (not) welcomed by" would be passive voice. "welcomes", with an appropriate subject (the entity actually doing the welcoming — e.g. "France welcomes") would be active voice. "to be (not) welcome" is actually neither of the twain. It's infinite, and the verb isn't even "welcome". It's "be". "welcome" is an adjective, here, not a verb.
Indeed, the main verb of the sentence in fact actually was in the active voice all along. The main verb is "states"/"says". Passive voice here would be "be stated by"/"be said by", and a passive voice headline would be Burqa stated by Sarkozy to be "not welcome" in France. The rest, following that main verb as its object, is indirect speech, in the form of a non-finite clause, with, ironically, an active voice infinitive. (There is no passive voice in English for the verb "be". It would be "is been", "was been", "will be been", and suchlike, none of which generally occur in English. The subordinate verb was in fact in the active voice all along, too.)
My advice is not to pretend that headline guidelines have anything to do with grammar. ☺ They really haven't. Most common headline guidelines run quite counter to conventional principles of grammar, or at the very least encourage telegraphese. (And when it comes to telegraphese, it's worth bearing in mind that in a newspaper that is not paper, we are not so constrained, in the way that paper newspapers are, by what will fit in a column in the given point size.) Uncle G (talk) 02:27, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Since you seem to be a professor of grammar, please fix the mistake I made. However, Sarkozy states burqa to be "not welcome" in France is incredibly stiff, imo. I'll throw out another suggestion, [[Sarkozy says the Islamic burqa will "not [be] welcome" in France]]. But, feel free to change back to your original. I will 'sight' it. --SVTCobra 02:38, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not invested in one specific wording of the title. The mistake wasn't in the new title, anyway. As I said, the verbs were active voice to start with, and you didn't actually change that. The error was the summary itself, which isn't (easily) fixable. ☺ Being incredibly stiff is at least a reason that cannot be faulted for being gramatically ill-founded, and would have been a better move summary.
I'm not convinced that it's that stiff, though. It's a common enough construction. "She told the boy to be careful." "He declared the burqa to be unwelcome." Do you really see such sentences as incredibly stiff? Uncle G (talk) 03:06, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, if my edit-summary was lacking. If he had used the term "unwelcome" then perhaps, but he used "not welcome." The sentence "he stated the burqa to be not welcome" does sound stiff or awkward to me.--SVTCobra 16:26, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- The active voice includes using present tense per WN:NC#Active, not passive, voice.--SVTCobra 16:51, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, no it doesn't. Note that those titles are telegraphese. The full form of the main verb in the first, without the telegraphese, would be "is shot by", which is as much present tense as "shoots" is. Past tense passive voice is "was shot by". Uncle G (talk) 13:09, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

- Do you really think that all little girls are killed in India? Or that they don't bother to rescue little girls when they are in trouble? --SVTCobra 16:22, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- No, I don't think all little girls are killed in India only the 10 million over the last 20 years that the United Nations report mentioned. The girls that the families silently suffocate or starve are probably not rescued. It is soooo good in N. America, this type of news is shocking. These actions are what several families do in India - mainly from the sounds of it for economic survival as they cannot afford the dowry marriage. Political officials are mandating new laws, providing new monetary incentives for families of female children, enacting laws against the abortions of female foetuses, enacting law against provision of dowries to turn the society traditions around so the official initiated the rescue here. The rescue of the girl in comparison to the documentary is very extremely rewarding. It sounds like a very desperate and tragic situation in India according to the UN. The docuemtary mentioned that there were 4 males to every female adult, that the population shifted by that amount. I have never been to India, myself, so have to go by what the UN says or news/documentaries. I guess I didn't have reason to question the UN. The politicians really are trying hard to get the problems changed regarding females, infanticide, foeticide, dowry murders where bridegroom families burn wives to make it look accidental to re-marry and obtain a better dowry. SriMesh | talk 16:41, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Obviously, there's more here. What do you think? A new article on the reactions to the death? Or a more extensive reactions section in Singer and songwriter Michael Jackson dies at age 50? - It was removed for being unattributed, not unsourced. Also, it did not form a sentence. --SVTCobra 12:35, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes not forming a sentence would be a problem. I think its pretty much unattributable, sorry for not understanding the difference, I could name a couple of the commentators who have made the comparison, but thats not really the important bit, what I wanted to get across was the grassroots reaction , I don't know how I would attribute the banners and placards equating the reforms with Nazism, the Obama pictures with Hitler moustaches etc, I could perhaps describe it, a second hand description of something seen on a TV screen, thats pretty much the impression we have of the story here in England but that could just tbe he news editors here pointing their cameras at the lunatic fringe. I guess its a story that could have done with more than a sentence or two. Anyway how is the story being reported on your side of the Atlantic?KTo288 (talk) 13:26, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi! I reverted your expansion of the Fair Use policy for now. Generally an established policy is not altered without a discussion, but in this case almost any use of a historic event image will end up not falling under Fair Use because most of those images were created by news agents. For example, the image of the second flag raising on Iwo Jima - despite being a US icon - is a copyrighted news image, and is still marketed as a news image. However, if you feel the expansion of the policy should be in place, please feel free to bring it up on the Water cooler and check it with WMF legal counsel. - Amgine | t 21:29, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

If it is allowed, it would make a nice addition to the article.
