Welcome
editAholtman, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Style guide - how articles should look before publishing
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- Audio Wikinews could always use more contributors
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Deprifry|+T+ 12:04, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your welcome message. [I could have needed a similar message when I started with the German wikinews... ;-) But this was earlier.] If I have any further questions, I will just pose them whereever I think it will be "appropriate". --Angela H. 12:23, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Welcome templates
editJust to fill you in a bit more, there's also {{subst:Hello-anon}} for IPs who make a noticeable positive contribution, {{subst:test}} for people wo do things like a page titled asdfgh or just adding that onto an existing article. The reason the template should be substituted is that otherwise you end up with an edit link that takes users to editing the template.
You probably want to take note of shortcuts as well, you can enter them into the search box at the left to go directly to specific pages such as the water cooler (WN:WC), deletion requests (WN:DR)), admin action alerts (WN:AAA), list of infoboxes (WN:IB), and quite a few more. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:28, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, another contribution to my talk page. :-) Thanks. --Angela H. 18:20, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
While I'm here...
editNew template for you, see Reactions to the execution of Saddam Hussein and Template:Translated Wikinews, format is:
- {{Translated Wikinews|title=article title goes here
- |wiki=language code of wiki goes here
- |language=English name of wiki's language}}
--Brian McNeil / talk 17:30, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you. :-) A New year's present? ;-) Well, in the German wikinews, we also include the language code as a picture with the corresponding template, but as far as I have seen, there are no language code templates here. What do you think of the "German layout style"? --Angela H. 17:37, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
- The German front page is something I don't think we could follow, but we should probably be using the language codes, I know User:Stevenfruitsmaak uses them when he uses a Dutch source, you're more than welcome to go and set up templates. I'd shout on the Water cooler to find out where they should be documented. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:45, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm, I am not quite sure whether I expressed myself correctly or whether I got you right. No, I did not want to introduce a new Wikinews front page. The layout question was meant to refer to the translation template. I just saw at least one page with a bit of documentation for language codes. Although I asked myself why there were two parameters (one of them optional) giving exactly the same results… It seems that Stevenfruitsmaak is on a wikinews holiday – preparing his exams. At least, that is what his user page told me. Thank you again for your help. --Angela H. 18:12, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
- Well, somehow he did not take his wiki holidays too seriously during the last few days... ;-) --Angela H. 18:16, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

- Yes it's difficult to control my addiction, especially if there's interesting news out there... anyway for foreign-language sources I found Template:Languageicon very handy: the first parameter is a two-letter code referring to the language as it is used in the wikimedia projects, e.g. de for German, nl for Dutch etc. The second parameter is the language name in English: this makes it an easy to use template across projects: if you use a German news source like Der Spiegel or something, you can put it behind the source in the sources section like {{Languageicon|de|German}}, which gives (German). The translation notice from Brian seems like a good idea, I've done some translation on Wikipedia but almost never here: the other language wiki's (in my case, the Dutch one), seem to been on permanent wikibreak... I have no idea were there could be more guidance on this subject.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 22:56, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your immediate answer. So it's just in case, someone forgets about the language code, that the first parameter was introduced? ;-) Well, the Dutch wikinews really does not have so many articles. A bit in contrast to the German wikinews (and recently also the French version :-)). So I think I got the "language entries" for the article right. Thanks again. --Angela H. 23:21, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Quiz
editA new quiz is up, want to translate it over to de. and do an interwiki? Might encourage other languages to pick up on it. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:26, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, a new week has already started… Thanks for reminding me. :-) --Angela H. 18:44, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

We have someone from de.wikinews with an accreditation request. Can you comment? --Brian McNeil / talk 14:25, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Brianmc! I hope that my comment on WN:AR can help the community on en.wikinews a bit with their decision. I don't really feel able to vote because I do not know too much about the accreditation on en.wikinews (except for what I just read on Wikinews:Accreditation policy) and have not been involved in other cases. Compared with Sean Heron, in Sean's case my decision would probably have been much clearer (and support), one of the reasons being that he was much more active (on de.wikinews), but — unfortunately — I missed his request somehow. --Angela H. 19:49, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Angela, as you might have seen, from the moment of my updated user page, which predated my request, I've started being more active than before on both en. and de.wikinews, preparing my own articles and contributing to those of others, which I intend to continue no matter what, but which, as I hope, also lends credibility to my request.
- Currently the votes are balanced and I'd ask you to lend a voice in support - to allow for access to press conferences, starting with the upcoming Frankfurt International BookFair in October where all topics are handled and interview access to dignitaries and interesting authors of many countries is possible. I will be there anyway, but the difference between (F) and (P) on my ID is the willingness of people to talk to someone - or to just hand someone a flyer. Press conference attendance will also come up on political issues.
- Your support would be very muich appreciated. --Gwyndon 20:37, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Don't know if you've seen the above page, but we could do with a photographer (wink, wink). --Brian McNeil / talk 16:34, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, first of all you could need someone who creates a link to meta:Wikimania 2008 or http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org on WN:WM2008… ;-) Well, actually, the problem is that I am neither a good photographer – maybe not so important… – nor someone who would be able to join the conference because I won't have my holidays then (and not be able to get any holidays during that period). But anyway, thanks for letting me know! --Angela H. - (talk) 16:48, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

- Yes, of course. I got another one when I tried to welcome you at de.wikinews. So I skipped inserting the welcome message at your talk page. --Angela H. (talk) 18:50, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Hi !
editNice to see you here :). I was glad to see your article still got released - with the review policy (which is of course a good thing in principle), getting all the finished ones actually published seems a bit of a problem. Cant say how long I'll be hanging round here, but I'm quite happy at the moment :). See you round! Sean Heron (talk) 14:32, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi! Nice to see you again. I did not know that you were that active over here. Well, I had to wait a bit until the article was published. (In the meantime, it had been marked "stale" twice, but I was able to find new news everytime. ;-)) Thank you for adding another paragraph to the article. :-) See you. --Angela H. (talk) 09:20, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
- P.S.: Well, actually I saw some of your contributions before and was going to leave you a message on your talk page, but could not make up my mind on the question which language I should take. ;-)
