Welcome

Planoneck, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Template:Weather World F

edit

Hi there. I note your addition of a location to the weather map but would point out that it is updated automatically every hour by a script I maintain and thus adding a location is more complex. Whilst I am too busy to add it at the moment, I will certainly look into this as soon as I can. Regards. Adambro 12:00, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I figured it was too easy to be true. Well, thanks for informing me. I guess for the time being I'll have to get my Hawaii weather from another source. ;-) ~Planoneck~ 12:08, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Lead article

edit

Are you aware that the curent lead articles about the tropical storm has 2 links to the same place. As you created the two links and published the article, it is your responsibility to add a source. If you do not I will have to unpublish it --User:Anonymous101 18:07, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

If I could jump in here, Planoneck. Sometimes it is not clear that sources from different publishers pick up the same wire story from Reuters, AP etc. You just have to be aware of that and try to find "different" sources. Also, this is a wiki and any user is encouraged to edit, write or fix things. I have gone ahead and added a source for you. Not to worry. Cheers, Jcart1534 18:18, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about that, guys. Apparently I copy-and-pasted the code for the first source and forgot to change the web address. I'll be more careful next time. ~Planoneck~ 22:50, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

VOA PD?

edit

Your article ,World stocks plunge on fears on US recession, was based on a VOA article which may not be PD. I heard from another user that article that say "Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters," are not PD. --User:Anonymous101 Talk 19:32, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, After reading the VOA copyright notice, I am quite sure it isn't as restrictions seem to only apply to images. Go to http://www.voanews.com/english/disclaim.cfm to see the notice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anonymous101 (talkcontribs) 19:36, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
This article is original to VOA and thus PD. Please check again and see [1] and you can see it does not contain their tags for AFP, AP and Reuters, at the end (which is where they put them when it applies).--SVTCobra 02:28, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nice work!

Hey Planoneck! Just want to say you are doing a great job. Your articles are very well written. Cheers, --Jcart1534 00:14, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Exceptional Newcomer Award may be awarded to newcomers who display exceptional enthusiasm, skill, and boldness beyond their experience. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 12:37, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, would you object to date bumping this to Feb 27? You published at 23:59 UTC. I just think it will get more readers as "today's" news. (and yes it is also still the 26th where I am). --SVTCobra 00:06, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, I wouldn't mind. I like for each day to have as many stories as possible, but if you think it'll get more readers if published on the 27th, go for it. ~Planoneck~ 00:13, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Cool, I see you bumped it. Also, this way as they are already awake in New Zealand and Australia, we don't have zero articles for the 27th. Cheers, --SVTCobra 00:32, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I date bumped this story to March 6. You published at 23:59 UTC. I hope you don't mind. --SVTCobra 00:42, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Award

edit

I award Planoneck this trophy (belatedly) for getting more than 11 articles published --SVTCobra 01:37, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

These awards were once given out like clockwork (I am told) when thresholds were met. Though you are already nearing "Staff reporter", I hope you will accept this "Cub reporter" trophy, though it is awarded late. Personally, I'd like to thank you for your contributions to Wikinews. --SVTCobra 01:37, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! It always gives me a good feeling when someone recognizes the time I spend/waste on these sites. :) ~Planoneck~ 01:53, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Anti-China protesters clash with police in Tibet

Nice work with this one. Could use a second quote box, perhaps lower-right of the article, for style - and/or a free-use image or two. Cirt - (talk) 00:42, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is this article ready for the front page?

edit

Planoneck- Thanks for your edits to "Constitutionality of DNC Florida primary to be decided in appeal" I'd love to see an article that I helped to write on the Wikinews main front page. (Ego driven-Electricmic - (talk) 20:01, 20 March 2008 (UTC))Reply

This is a really well-done article. Good work. Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:12, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. I just wanted to let you know that the version of this story which you published was a copyright violation. I believe the text was copied from Haaretz (I cannot confirm since the copy-vio was overwritten) and it drew attention at Admin action alerts. Before you publish any article, please check that it is not a copyright violation. An effective way of doing this is to google a few samples of the text. If they are word-for-word the same, google will list them first. Cheers, --SVTCobra 01:47, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure that there is consensus to do this. Certainly where clearly unfree images with no justification to use under fair use are proposed for deletion this is often objected to on the basis that to remove the image would change an archived article. I would presume that this concern also applies to replacing images as this also changes the article. Adambro (talk) 22:00, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you feel it violates the archiving conventions, I'll go ahead and remove it. I just don't really like seeing articles without images when there's a perfectly free image available. ~Planoneck~ 22:10, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Publishing

edit

Generally {{review}} should be added on all new articles, so as editors can look them over, as per the new flagged revisions. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 22:52, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

But that doesn't mean you don't do good work, which is excellent BTW. Its our attempt to get into Google News :-) DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 00:18, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's gonna take some getting used to, but I see why it's needed. I haven't checked in here for a while, so thanks for keeping me in the loop. ~Planoneck~ 01:02, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem :-) Without posting a barrage of links, a lot of this is on the Water cooler. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 01:24, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sighting articles

edit

Hia:). Articles shouldn't be sighted until they are published. Some odd things can happen with the googlenews feed otherwise, and with front page vandalism. Gopher65talk 23:49, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why did you revert my edit here: [2]? It has nothing to do with the article, its mostly a comment, and seems more like an attack than anything factual or NPOV. Just curious. Cheers :) DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 12:48, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

My bad, I was reviewing the edit (while half-asleep) and I must have clicked the rollback button by mistake. I didn't even notice it until you posted here, so thanks for letting me know. It was a POV attack, so you were right. ~Planoneck~ 13:24, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah I kinda figured it was something like that. No worries. I myself have done it before as well. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 17:41, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

A penny for your thoughts

edit

Okay, not really, but I am requesting your participation in the following Water Cooler Discussion: OR and Broadcast report. The discussion involves the need for specific policy concerning how Original Reporting relates to information recieved from a broadcast report of an event. This can include both news-style reports and non-news reports, such as a sporting event. Thanks and again, please share your thoughts on this so we can get as many people involved as possible, especially since this relates to an important topic such as OR. —Calebrw (talk) 05:18, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.
