Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

editThe first pillar of Wikinews writing is that articles aren't just posted to Wikinews. You need to write an article conforming to our policies and guidelines, and submit it for review. You can read about the other principles an article should conform to at Wikinews:Pillars of writing; then, I suggest reading Wikinews:Writing an article, which is a good tutorial on writing a first article, and has an article creation form that automatically provides you with several required formatting elements. --Pi zero (talk) 03:22, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- Were you having trouble with wiki markup on that page? I'm wondering if you're using that egregious "VisualEditor" (VE) thing. If you're using an ordinary edit window (rather than VE), what you'd want for the develop tag is simply the word "develop" surrounded by double braces; the text in the edit window would look like this:
{{develop}}
- (though if you look at what I've just written in an edit window, it'll look really complicated because of the stuff I had to do to make it typeset to what you need to type in the edit window).
Any questions, I'm happy to try to help... except, it's very late where I am and I need to turn in; I probably won't be around for the next few hours. But I am happy to be of help, when I can. --Pi zero (talk) 04:36, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- No, this even more egregious thing (but visual - not sure how to switch to that there). Gryllida (chat) 09:21, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
Seeing that you have not added new messages to talk pages so far - perhaps this link is handy?
I need your help.
editThank you for helping me. Could you please tell me how to add images to any article? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by M.ranajit (talk • contribs)
- Use the "Free use media upload" option on the left side for free-use images. If the image is non-free, use this option instead. Leaderboard (talk) 13:30, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot.
Hi. I reviewed your article. It's clearly improved, but there were significant problems. That's not surprising for a first submitted article, of course; the first is always a massive learning experience, trying to get a handle on the various things needed (hopefully it gets much easier, with later articles, as one gets a feel for the basics). Please see my review comments, and detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 00:21, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
