Welcome edit

Chris Mann, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Thunderhead - (talk) 05:17, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

You recently contacted me (Nzgabriel), below is the direct reply I gave you on my talk page.

Yes, I have done a few interviews. The way I get in contact with them is usually by e-mail, or some other technological device (I.M.). So try and find their e-mail online.

When I am asking for an interview I usually say who I am, what the interview will be about, and how many RSS readers there are.

I usually like the interview to be done via e-mail, that way I have exact quotes, etc. But I recently did one (not yet released) via telephone. I recorded that by putting the phone on speaker phone, and put my computer microphone next to the speaker. Very basic.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. --Nzgabriel | Talk 05:31, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

There are 30,000 RSS readers, this information can be found on the Wikimedia Foundation website here: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Our_projects#Wikinews. To do an interview you could buy a voice recorder, or just jot down notes using pen and paper (yes, those still exist ;) ). I don't know of anyone here who has done a face-to-face interview similar to what you are proposing. Sorry. --Nzgabriel | Talk 02:54, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Chris !

I read your concern about the article - "EU fines Microsoft $1.35 billion for non-compliance with antitrust decision". I have replied to it on the article's talk page. Please read it and post your comment. I published the news with a description of "what happened" and cited 5 sources. Also, the article met Wikinews' content guidelines and it was not a duplicate, therefore I do not see a reason why it should be unpublished. It is quite obvious that once a news is published on Wikinews, it will be edited by more and more readers and they will add more information if they have. That is the strength of Wikinews.

There is difference between a news and a research article. News has a "time" factor which is very important and we should publish the news (while conforming to the guidelines) as early as possible otherwise it looses its appeal. There are dozens of premier websites which publish news faster than Wikinews.

I am quite new to Wikinews, it was my first news story and it is nice to know that we have serious volunteers like you. Thanks for raising the concern. Such discussions will be helpful in improving Wikinews further.

Hi Chris Mann, I am afraid I do not understand what you mean by:

"The current code does not create the correct link to the article talk page, it creates a link to the talk space of the namespace the page is currently on. Thus, when used as the header on a Comments: page, it links to Comments talk:, leading to at least some of these. Replacing User_talk with Talk should give the desired effect. Perhaps others do, but to be safe, I'd bring it up elsewhere. I found it here WN:AAA#Edits to protected pages. Cheers, --SVTCobra 02:25, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've created it. What was the problem before?

It needs expansion and sources, and a date. Think you can handle it? B2xiao (talk) 19:38, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Chris. I hope you don't feel like I sanitized it too much. Actually, it is quite sad that no other editor took an interest in this article as you have had it in "ready" for about a week. It is a great article. Cheers. --SVTCobra 00:25, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Admin status granted edit

Congratulations, you have just been made a sysop! You have volunteered for boring housekeeping activities which normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops basically can't do anything: They cannot delete pages arbitarily (only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY"), they cannot protect pages in an edit war they are involved in, they cannot ban users except in cases of obvious vandalism or excessive edit warring (24-hour "cool down" ban). What they can do is delete junk as it appears, ban vandals, remove pages that have been listed on Deletion requests for more than a week, protect pages when asked to by other members, and help keep the few protected pages there are up to date.

Note that almost everything you can do can be undone, so don't be too worried about making mistakes. You will find more information on Wikinews:Administrators, please take a look before experimenting with your new powers. Drop me a message if there are any questions or if you want to stop being a sysop (could it be?). Have fun! Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 18:40, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello again. I did a wikipedia re-direct thingie to rename the article, I will examine the way you did it and if the future needs it, will do it that way. Sorry about that. Thanks for the note about minors as well. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 03:12, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

FYI, I removed some trolling from you talk page. --SVTCobra 14:44, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Such an entertaining guy (sounds like en.WP is copping some of this guy's vitriol as well). I'm most amused by the fact that he seems to have tried to suggest I may have had some kind of conflict of interest in one of the many non-OR articles I have written, while completely by-passing the great, honking COI OR article I wrote when I interviewed my own boss (and, admittedly, openly announced the COI and asked everyone else to check to make sure I wrote a decent article). Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 01:24, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

A penny for your thoughts edit

Okay, not really, but I am requesting your participation in the following Water Cooler Discussion: OR and Broadcast report. The discussion involves the need for specific policy concerning how Original Reporting relates to information recieved from a broadcast report of an event. This can include both news-style reports and non-news reports, such as a sporting event. Thanks and again, please share your thoughts on this so we can get as many people involved as possible, especially since this relates to an important topic such as OR. —Calebrw (talk) 05:10, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

privs edit

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.
