Admin Voting edit

Thankyou verry much Borofkin for your vote of confidence for me becoming an admin.--Ryan524 16:36, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Would you like me to delete Friend of asylum seeker accuses DIMIA of harassment? If I get your permission, as you are the original author, I can delete immediately. NGerda 22:00, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)

IIRC since other users have edited it you need to let it go through DR. --Cspurrier 22:02, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, I was slightly confused by the statement on {{delete}}. NGerda 22:05, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)

Rwanda edit

Hi there, thanks for nominating Rwanda for the Country of the Week! Hopefully we're on for next week :) ClareWhite 12:30, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

We are! And I've set up a 'news hut' to gently guide my friends into it. It's here and I need all the help I can get :) ClareWhite 15:07, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

btw: Was that you who just updated the second lead? if so, you're not logged in. - Amgine/talk 05:08, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

That was me, Amgine. And Borofkin, I think it's awesome that you are focusing on events in Rwanda! We really need this kind of coverage; I'm just sick of hearing about Michael Jackson and the bodies of little girls in Florida being found. Keep up the good work! NGerda 05:13, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)
Get used to the news cycle, NGerda. <sigh> And apologies, Borofkin... I should have known better, which is why I was wondering. - Amgine/talk 05:15, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Which news cycle, Amgine? NGerda 05:16, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)
Have y'all been following this: Rwanda newshut? In my opinion, the purpose of all of the "recycling" of news, for which we are regularly criticised, is to create a news site and a news community that can support local projects like this. I'm trying to give them a little support. - Borofkin 05:22, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Just saw that when I came on, Borofkin. Excellent idea, and a very useful project. This is a form of "portaling" which I would love to encourage at any level of locality: a country, a province, a county... even a single high-school, if they would like to produce an online news site about their school. I haven't read exactly what the newshut is up to, but if it is raising the profile of Rwanda, making the country's news available for others, I'm in favour of it. - Amgine/talk 05:26, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm so impressed! Thanks so much for all your hard work overnight! I think this will really inspire my media group, who are so far getting to grips with the technology. I wondered if it's worth putting a link to Country of the Week in the info box? It will raise the profile of that project and let people know why there are all the stories about Rwanda. Woo! ClareWhite 08:17, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Borofkin, I wondered if you might be able to help next week when I'm in Rwanda? I don't know for sure what sort of web access I'm going to have and would like to be able to email someone who could put material up if I can't get to wikinews. Could you be the one? ClareWhite 16:03, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm hoping it won't be necessary, but from what I'm hearing from the students it may be hard to access Wikinews so I wanted a backup. I will be sure to include full notes with everything and feel free to put the whole email onto a Talk page. ClareWhite 08:23, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Privatization edit

I thought that if "Privatisation" was an english spelling, then the OED dictionary or other UK dictionary would have that listed. I assumed that since dictionary.com showed no listings in *any* dictionary, that it was not a OE/AE (Original English / American English) spelling issue. ----RossKoepkeTalk 00:47, 5 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I probably should have looked more closely; I did not see any discussion entry by the anonymous IP on the talk page, or previously in the article, so I restored the NPOV as it appeared to have been removed without addressing the NPOV issues. The article is still biased, imo, but I haven't the time to devote to the article. Thanks for doing that! - Amgine/talk 20:39, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Is Australia in this much trouble? edit

http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Australian_Minister_%27leaks%27_draft_of_anti-terror_bill "The inclusion and definition of sedition, which in the bill may include "to bring the sovereign [i.e. the Queen] into hatred or contempt", or to "urge disaffection" with the Australian Government. Thanks for your help with the Nguyen article, much appreciated. I just wanted to check something with you. You added the line "It was reported that Nguyens mother would not be permitted physical contact with her son." Are you sure this is entirely accurate? Welcoming wikinewsies edit

Howdy! Thanks so much for your work welcoming wikinewsies... Lately, I've been inserting {{subst:Welcome}} rather than just {{Welcome}}. Doing this actually inserts the text of the template, rather than making a server request for the current template text each time a page is loaded. It creates a tiny bit less server load so I'm thinking it's a good thing. Of course, the other good thing is that the message doesn't change everytime someone changes Template:Welcome! Best wishes... --Chiacomo (talk) 04:45, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Computer-Assisted Reporting edit

Hi Borofkin. CAR is a journalism technique which involves using the computer to do things like original research, finding primary sources, contacting experts, arranging interviews, requesting FOI material, accessing and processing raw data etc. It's usually taught in final year jrn courses because it gets rather in-depth with statistical analysis and data processing. I like your political project idea – it looks good. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 09:10, 1 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm afraid User:199.126.30.22 is from somewhere in Canada, so the Oz welcome might be inappropriate. I use http://visualroute.visualware.com which gives me a fairly inoffensive email once a month or so for the use of their service. --Brian McNeil / talk 00:00, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm working on it now. Thanks Neutralizer 02:04, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Borofkin, I saw your edits and like your approach to this. The way I read this, it was planned as a collaborative approach to examine the editing behaviour from and in response to a particular user to achieve some clarity over acceptable use and avoid future conflict. It seems that now you have changed your mind and changed the format away from "type-of-behaviour based" to "people based", which I find counterproductive. What is your reasoning behind this? Did I misread your intentions? Or is there policy in place that forces the "people based" format? --vonbergm 02:24, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Vonbergm 100%; I liked your original approach. I got upset when I saw Chiacomo and then Amgine delete SIP's edit and then when you deleted your own diffs it just seemed like the whole thing was turning sour...I put everything back in but now it will look to some like it's just me stirring things up. Neutralizer 02:32, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree totally; touchy,feely is good. Neutralizer 02:38, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, now I feel a bit better. =) OK, I agree with Neut and Vonbergm on the idea of a common brief, and would suggest reverting to my last, or whatever. Let me know how you would like to proceed. StrangerInParadise 03:24, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Response to Borofkin; Sure, a "common brief" on a separate page for the diffs sounds good to me; I am not good with formatting but if someone sets up the separate page format, that would be great. Neutralizer 12:44, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Generally speaking, when one brings a request for dispute resolution I have two considerations: has the bringing party attempted the other steps outlined on the dispute resolution page; has the bringing party informed the other party of the dispute resolution request? - Amgine | talk en.WN 22:57, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

comment every other time the MrM issue has been brought up, Amgine steps in to try to sabotage the process by bogging down attempts like this, by deleting Rfda requests and by deflecting the discussion toward other contributors with uncalled for comments like this he made yesterday to SiP on Cartman's talk page. I am not optimistic about this effort going very far because Amgine and 1 or 2 others have been extremely successful in the past at manipulating/stopping a process like this with bureaucratic sludge and deflections. Neutralizer 13:05, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure it meaningful to talk about the other steps as applied individually to each person when several people are involved. I strongly suspect that 1, 2, and 3 have been done to varying degrees by various involved people, plus it appears this is only at 4, not 5. Nyarlathotep 11:58, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Borofkin, I'll likely endorse whatever you guys eventually write, especially the parts about MrM being hostile to new users, but I don't currently have any new objections to add, nor have I had many encounters with MrM recently. Nyarlathotep 11:58, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I did look at that. It appears from the Indymedia timestamp it was created there before the Wikinews article creation? (Wishes Indymedia would use something compatible with us) - Amgine | talk en.WN 03:09, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just tested, the Melbourne Indymedia site is on +9 or more hours. It's clock is also inaccurate. - Amgine | talk en.WN 03:20, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Uhm, if the article were posted at 1508 Indymedia time, which is approximately +9 hours, then it was posted at 0408 UTC. The Wikinews article was posted at 1500 UTC, or almost 11 hours later. Which, again, is a fairly astonishing coincidence. I don't know what to say for this case. - Amgine | talk

DR edit

Borofkin, That was an extreme unintentional screwup..I don't even know how it was possible? Could it have been an edit conflict? As you can see I was of the same view as most of the edits I apparently deleted so vandalism would make no sense....I really can not figure this one out can you? The only edit I recall making was adding my own agreement with Vonbergm; is it possible a vandal was somehow piggy backing my edit? I am really baffled at this. A question edit

Borofkin, I have a question for you. How close does Wikinews allow people to fly to copyright? I understand that most of the articles here are derivative, but I've been noticing for a while now that when you look at the articles by one particular editor, they are often just one paragraph taken from different articles with one or two words changed and then pasted together. Sometimes no words at all are change. I consider this to be a copyvio, is it here on Wikinews? Sarah Ewart (Talk) 01:14, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply (and Amgine as well). Next time I notice something I'll tag it. What I noticed today wasn't as bad as some of the previous ones, but FWIW this is an example :
Wikinews: "The couple accepted flowers and chatted with the crowd for a few minutes before being driven off in a black Rolls Royce."
[4]: "The royal couple accepted bunches of flowers and chatted with the crowd for a few minutes before being driven away in a black Rolls Royce."
Thanks again for your reply. I appreciate it. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 03:20, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
