There is a link to the page I thought it was plagiarizing. I think some changes have been made to the article since I reported it, as when I first saw it, it was almost exactly the same as the Wikinews article. Anywhom, there it is.

I personally have no problem with the use of the word invasion but feel that other editors may and tagged it more or less so we could find an alternative. Those who are pro-Iraq war are likely to claim that "invasion" is POV - Cartman02au (Talk)(AU Portal) 01:55, 17 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Original Reporting

edit

I agree with your statement on the talk page of the latest hotel article (protest article). I would like to know what I can do to help? I think that the original template should include the name of the person or the username, afterall that person is the source as you state and It would make it much easier for someone to track down the author to ask any OR questions. Let me know what I can do. Thanks for the compliment too :) Jason Safoutin 02:10, 28 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

RE: Speedy

edit

The Speedy guideline numbers 1, 6 and 8 which can apply to most of the editorials here. These articles, specifically #8, which "other works of fiction that damage the credibility of Wikinews." As op-eds do not always represent truth, they can be considered fiction. #6 considers spam or advertisement, as many try to exploit our openness in trying to embed certain portions into op-eds, and #1, in which op-eds rarely contain useful information beyond opinion. These are all valid points that work with most encounters of op-eds on this site. --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 02:58, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Not entirely. As stated above, there are numerous occasions where a Speedy is acceptable in relation to an op-ed piece. We don't allow them in our mainspace, where our NPOV policy is in effect. DR is for articles where it isn't clear, not for every article that needs to be deleted. I will move them to userspaces if there is salvageable content; if there is none, then I will outright delete them on one of the Speedy guidelines. Wikinews' reputation heavily relies upon our neutrality, it's what distinguishes us from other sites. Having op-ed pieces on our front page, however, degrades that reputation dramatically. Most users, when they drop an op-ed on our site, never return. This saves DR discussions for articles where there isn't a clear-cut decision if it is a policy violation. The ones that I delete are undisputably in violation. --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 05:14, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • It would take a message on my talk page, requesting an undeletion (or from another admin) with reasoning. I will undelete and move it to the user's space if I still find policy violations with them, and will attach a message with it that it should not be entered into the main space until they are dealt with. If there were no violations with it, it will be undeleted without any conditions. --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 05:20, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

MrM's characterization of an editorial as CSD-1 a work of fiction is dangerous nonsense, as is application of CSD-1 and CSD-8. That is not the intent of SD. It does, however, give carte blanche to an admin to delete articles he doesn't like without the trouble of discussion simply by calling its neutrality into question as editorial. StrangerInParadise 07:15, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

If there is an article you'd like undeleted and moved to your user space, I'd be more than happy to oblige. Alternatively you may request undeletion on WN:DR and an admin will probably undelete it for the duration of the vote. Nyarlathotep 12:05, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

That is kind of you, but I would prefer that CSD-1, CSD-6 and CSD-8 not be misapplied in the first place. I would prefer not to have to ask returned that which ought not to have been taken to begin with. StrangerInParadise 12:55, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Stranger, this is the last time I'm asking you. Stop stalking me. I was fully within my grounds to delete them, and I will continue to on the guidelines on the page. --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 15:55, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

That you assume I (and Nyarlathotep?) are somehow stalking you is an uncivil assumption of bad faith. That you believe what you say regarding SD implies that someone should keep an eye on you. StrangerInParadise 22:55, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Nope. Just you. Almost every statement you make has a reference to me in it somewhere. I used to be flattered, but now I'm just creeped out. And, please have your eyes checked. It's in black and white, not what you think is right. --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 22:57, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I do not see the personal attack there. Therefore, I cannot be blocked for it, as in the case of empty threats. Telling a user to have their eyes checked means that they need to read whatever it was again. They obviously needed to. ArbCom: MrM

edit

I have solved every issue with everyone on this site WITHOUT ArbCom. I also do not allow personal issues to get involved on ths site. Regardless, any de-Admin comes from the community. ArbCom is NOT an oppurtunity for the community to vote ot to voice opinions. ArbCom, in this situation, has no authority to de-Admin. IMO, we do not need ArbCom for. this is a news site. We write news, and these are personal issues that do not belong on Wikinews. Jason Safoutin 01:06, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

In the 3 months or so that I have been here, this is the first I have heard of this issue. I only picked up on it when it was brought to ArbCom. So IMO, speaking from as long as I have been here, I do not agree. I never had the chance to discuss this matter and ANY discussion of a matter involving the de-admin of a user is an issue for the community to decide not arbcom, regardless of the situation. If you want ArbCom to deadmin, then you need to make it so that only members of ArbCom can vote in admins. Again, Wikinews is a news site. It is not a theatre of war and it is not grounds for people to create their own battles. If someone has a personal issue with another user, then discuss it off Wikinews. Jason Safoutin 02:02, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
And I said No. If I just heard of this issue, and I have been here for 3 months, then No the community has NOT had enough time and no the community has not been properly notified. Jason Safoutin 02:12, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Then perhaps instead of just "posting" issues, make a pont at putting them on the Nav bar? Not everyone looks at the water cooler or the news room. All I am saying is that ArbCom is not a place for peole to take out their personal feelings. We do not need "officials" to resolve disputes over a computer. If we are going to elect admins through the community, then it is the community's decision to de-admin them, period. Otherwise, to hell with the community, and make ArbCom the official boss of everyone and everything on Wikinews. But I know that I will not allow my rigts as a user, to be dictated by a committee that wrongfully de-admins users without a community' direct approval. Any and all de-admins MUST be decided by the community. I alo believe that it is totally unnecessary to have 4 or 5 pages to look at for this issue, I do not have time to look at all this stuff and it should be clearly marked on the worshop page ALL locations regarding this issue. IMO any other way is misleading to users. Jason Safoutin 02:27, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Two errors in article

edit

Hi David, thank you for the article. I just noticed two errors in the article if you could possibly amend?

Cruise's numerous statements that no one should be using any psychatric medication was not only ignorant but darn right dangerous. (not "no one should not be")]

No one can possibly argue that it is responsible for Tom Cruise to effectively tell every child... to suddenly stop their meds and start “exercising and taking vitamins.” (not "irresponsible")

Original reporting is the direction I want to move in, and was partly my motive for the interest I held in it. The request for an interview comes from a candidate that is not from my own U.S. state, and I could only help with formulating the most general questions... not ones specifically interesting to that state. Mr. Ashdown needs Wikinews interest from members of his own state. -Edbrown05 07:48, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for any confusion

edit

Hi,Borofkin,

The above was meant to be an admin alert. I only asked that you "particularly" might be interested since you had blocked me; I certainly did not say or imply that I only wanted your attention to it. Since that request has been apparently misunderstood, I will now completely withdraw my request that you "particularly" respond as my main effort is to bring the edit to the Admins for consideration. I also do not feel it was right for MrM to move my edit without discussion with me first, but, I assume he simply misunderstood my intentions. Neutralizer 23:06, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, simply put, I'd rather not do it myself, because if you can teach others why there might be bias in articles, one would hope those individuals would realize what may cause disputes in the future, and edit their articles (or ask others to edit them) to remove or neutralize that content. I don't wish to fuel the flames, but I don't really want to edit every single article on Wikinews that has to do with controversial topics such as the ones in the Amnesty article. I was hoping that the inclusion of examples and describing why it is not acceptable to our policies would educate most of the contributors to the article, and in turn, those contributors would pay more attention to content in future works. I don't know; maybe it's not working, but I'll keep trying it, unless I've got some other suggestions ;). --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 02:37, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Borofkin

edit

A belated hi and thanks for the welcome. You were wrong when you said "If you want to be truly anonymous, you should create an account" - that is untrue and so is the statement by wikinews that "Registered users have their IP addresses hidden from public view".

That's because other admin users are tracking my IP when I'm logged in with my username. And one has even published my IP next to my username on a wikinews page.

Is that abuse under the wikinews policy? Nemesis 08:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

....

2. Yes you could be right about the IP guess or otherwise he is technically savvy (or has a friend with other privileges) that could allow him to check IP's. Never the less - whether the IP is guessed or traced - I think it's inappropriate to publish other users IP when they haven't been involved with spamming or vandalism etc.

...

3. On another issue I'm still pretty sore in the way those admins went about in deleting my work (with amendments) on that copyvio excuse. Those admins knew that my article had been copied from wikinews and a number of hours later posted on that blog - the times and dates showed such (I saw one of yours there too). And then to turn it around and accuse me of copying my article from the blog means I must be able to time travel! But I guess that's the way some admins treat newcomers - with unreasonableness and hostility...

Hellos!

WikiNews hotline

edit

Dear Borofkin,

I'm a freelance writer based in New York and I'm doing a short article about WikiNews. Obviously, WikiNews breaks with traditional reporting in a lot of ways--but what I'd like to focus on is the way potential sources can request an interview either online or by calling the hotline. Since you seem to do some of your own original reporting, can you share some of your experiences with me? I'd love to hear some stories and get a sense of how it works and what advantages it has over traditional reporting.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

privs

edit

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.
