Welcome to Wikinews

Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

What do you think of this proposal to prevent this article from being publsihed? Maybe you think it is OK to remove the breaking review template? See the User:Mrchris page for the work that could be left unpublished if that template is not removed. Q/0/k 03:35, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
- I disagree. All four articles are capable of eventually being published independently, in my opinion. Benny the mascot (talk) 03:41, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
To keep discussions un-fragmented, please continue the discussion where it started, and use the Template:Talkback. Thank you for the answer. Q/0/k 03:47, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

editSo far (perhaps sadly) we've only a couple of prizes up. The mugs ones from NewsTrust looks likely, plus CA$ 10 from Bawolff. Both too small to need a tax declaration.
If you wish to ask family if it's okay (for the NewsTrust one they might want your real name, I think it'd just be name, age, country - a minor winning would be great PR for them) then you could could put it as "I want to enter a competition to write and publish neutral news articles, trying to write to a standard high enough for publication on the BBC". --Brian McNeil / talk 14:57, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm just afraid that this novice user Wikiwide, the author of the article, being probably a scientist (you just look at the first version of this article), has a very little understanding of what Wikinews is. And probably has lots of other work to do, is not interested, etc. Even the topic of climate contrarians near UNCCC sounds scientific, doesn't it? I think that if you revive this article, it will be very good
- for Wikinews,
- for this user, and
- for the environment
- (as some of the "skeptics" or
- just common diesel car drivers can find this article realistic)
Please be informed that only an experienced Wikinews user can manage with such significant and responsible task. Q/0/k 04:13, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Encouraging trolls
editDid you actually review the contributions of that muppet IP address that you apologised to because I deleted his trolling insults? Unbelievable!
I was on the Internet before there was a World Wide Web, I've seen trolls-a-plenty, I know how to deal with them. The "drama" caused by asking for that comments page to be undeleted is exactly what they thrive on.
Comments is right on the edge of policy. The WMF could, at any point, tell us to remove the entire namespace and delete every page in it. I used my discretion to delete the only version of that page which contained an insult directed at me. It's likely that would have been the last we saw of this particular troll. Then you say "sorry Brian deleted your trolling". I suggest you look up the meaning of the word censorship before you use it again. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:47, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- Merriam-Webster definition of censor: "to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable; to suppress or delete as objectionable"
- Deleting offensive comments seems to fit that definition of censorship. Please note that I'm not a troll-loving or admin-hating contributor; I just believe that administrators' and bureaucrats' actions need to be revewed from time to time. Benny the mascot (talk) 16:28, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- I don't disagree with admin actions being reviewed; I disagree with the way in which you did so - effectively forcing someone to post the trolling comment I removed to satisfy your curiosity. Yes, they didn't restore it, but they posted a copy on the undelete request. Do you know what would be required to delete all the versions containing it? This is the point; if you don't trust other admins to review what one of us does then the troll is winning by disrupting the community and forcing them to pore over things like this. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:04, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't force Tempodivalse to post the trolling comment; that was his or her decision alone. Your deletion summary provided enough information to infer what happened anyway, since it provided a link to your passport photo. I wasn't trying to feed a troll; I was only trying to point out something that seemed extralegal. Apparently the community doesn't agree...but you ironically did support undeletion ;) Benny the mascot (talk) 05:57, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I did - to make the point that people have admin privileges because they're trusted. Questioning it can have consequences you do not intend. Perhaps now you see why there are better ways than drama and wikilawyering on the deletion requests page. Wikinews doesn't set the bar for adminship particularly high, you'll likely get it in a reasonable time; you, then, wouldn't want the same done to you. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:04, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry if my reposting the deleted post was inappropriate. I thought it would be easier for non-admins to decide which way to vote if they knew what exactly they were voting on. Although I'm not sure why we went through the hassle of oversighting said post, that seemed to have been giving the troll more attention than he deserved (and it's not like there was anything actionable/super offensive on it). Tempodivalse [talk] 02:29, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Sports report
editIn a sports report, as asked at Wikinews:Water_cooler/assistance#Sports_records, the format (x-y, a-b) generally notates overall record and conference record, where x is the number of overall wins, y is the number of overall losses, a is the number of in-conferences wins and b is the number of in-conference losses. I believe this format is generally used in the United States more than any other place. Hope this helps. Calebrw (talk) 06:45, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Remember, many people will lurk, connected long-term, but not regularly checking for messages. Please be patient when looking for answers to queries, it can be annoying to see someone ask a question but leave before you notice it. |
