New main page problems

• New main page looks broken in IE explorer (lead 2 picture displays at right top, but text doesn't). --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 22:53, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

• For me, IE6 displays the lead articles one on top of the other, while Safari does everything just like it's supposed to. Don't tell me we're going to have to make Main Page/Internet Explorer users and Main Page/Everyone else. Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 23:45, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

• IE7. Main lead box is way too wide fills entire field, yet image and text are narrow and centered. Other leads are pushed out of the way, with the second being visible as a narrow strip to the right if I scroll the browser right. 3rd and 4th leads are both pushed below 1st lead. I think i got a way to keep all the leads consistently meeting at all resolutions (no more volvos). This is for firefox/opera, as I don't have IE on hand to test, but I would like to hope it works in IE. Basically it will rearange itself depending on how big your window is (I think that is refered to as a variable fixed width design (not sure). ). problems so far: not sure if it will work if your default font size is not 13px, After 1280x1024 it just goes to a fixed width design for resolution 1280x1024 as that is how big my monitor is (easily fixed, I'm just too lazy to test beyond that), The handling of the image on the first lead could be better on lower resolutions, and increasing the font size will make it go off screen (scrollbars come on), however images will be resized accordingly, so everything still lines up. It really just seems to be the size of the box around lead-1. The image is narrow, the text is narrow, but the box is really wide with lots of blank space and it pushes everthing else out of the way. --SVTCobra 00:12, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

giant radioactive symbol seems overly sensationalist...

...and does not reflect the actual degree of risk, implications, or amount of nuclear material. I advocate switching to a different image or at least sizing down. Dar-Ape 06:27, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

agreed, perhaps something like an image comprised of the entries of strontium, plutonium and radium from the periodic table.

Israel-Gaza violence

Its stunning that we have not included today's fighting in Gaza. According to BBC and al-Jazeera its been the most intense fighting since Israel withdrew from the Strip in 2005. At least 52 Palestinians were killed (16 militants) and two Israeli soldiers. Hamas also fired up to 50 rockets into Israel afterwards.[1][2] --Al Ameer son - (talk) 22:16, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

New main page design: overlay?

Story links on main page

It used to be that the article titles were clickable for the leads in this relatively new main page design. But now the only way to get to the articles is to click the "Full story" link. I am using IE 7. --SVTCobra 00:22, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

New in Pictures

Could someone with appropriate permissions edit out the 'ever' in the 'News in Pictures' blurb (or more after the '2nd').

Amber Alert Section

I am not sure if I am posting this in the correct place, but should WikiNews have a section dedicated to Amber Alerts, and a Permalink to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, or at least an Amber Alert Ticker that automatically updates? Well, I don't know how Wikimedia's servers work, but most web sites that do that will detect the visitors IP address, and only load the ticker relevant to their country, based on the location of the IP address. I am not sure if this helps, but I logged into MySpace the other day and they had an amber alert system set up...which alerted those people within the area of the alerts. As someone who doesn't like the word can't, I'll mention its possible, just not pretty. Some thoughts that come to mind: could load js from toolserver, toolserever detects country based on ip. Thats a bit ugly though (and I'm not sure if we're allowed to use toolserver for something like that), but most likely solution to work. Another way that will work a very small portion of the time is see what the language settings of the browser is. en-US you're in us, en-CA you're in canada etc, however those are often inaccurate or set to the wrong thing. Could use Java to detect stuff, and go from there, but wouldn't work for all people, and you'd probably need the script signed for security reasons (unsure). Could have a mediawiki extention pass the ip address back to the site js (or include a different one based on IP), but that requires making, might (or might not) have privacy issues (but is essentially what we want). Could just do it per portal (on US portal put amber alerts, on other country put appropriate alerts) (Works right now). Last of all there could be some magic way of getting this out of the DOM I'm not aware of that makes it a simple problem. Does the script that Crasheddata is refering to get changed by the server-end (php asp etc) or is it one script servered to everybody, and the country is determined on the client end? If its a simple Javascript script+cookies (with the cookies set by the js, not the server), we can do it easily. If the script is changed on server end, or if the cookie is sent from the server end, then that needs a php extention to mediawiki (which is harder as it needs to be both made and approved). Use a separate 'image credit' link on the main page for every image?

I like what you've done with the image for the main story - linking the picture to the story and having a small link to 'image credit' beneath. I think you should do this for the whole main page, as the titles are in black and at first don't intuitively look like links.

I have photos of the God Hates Fags protest group outside the United Nations (or several blocks away from it) and the counter protests of a far larger amount of Latinos chanting "We love our pop" - I have the audio. ... and as apparently the lead story, is just bollox. I objected plenty when US/Canadian vote stuff appeared in (IMO) excess quantity because it was small potatoes on the world stage.
This story is small potatoes on the UK stage. It should not have such prominence.

Suggestion

We need a better category system than now. The present category system ist not good enough and it has only few subjects. What we need are more Portals, like woman, animal, countries, lierature etc.
