Wikinews talk:Country of the Week
Great work and idea!
editThanks, CGorman, for the research you put into compiling that list! This a great idea; I'll try to follow up on it immediately. - Amgine 20:49, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Question on what qualifies an area as a country
editQuestion: whay is Scotland (a part of the United Kingdom) considered a country on your list and Texas (a part of the United States) is not? -- Davodd | Talk 07:35, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yes I was thinking about that when I created this. I suppose I called it country of the week because area of the week does'nt sound very good. Perhaps after scotland we should enforce the proper definition of country (i.e independent state with own political system...) → CGorman (Talk) 11:15, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I was thinking the same thing about Scotland. Why don't we just skip it and go straight to Nigeria? Dan100 (Talk) 14:17, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Well I suppose so. Amgine won't be happy but... two having gotten queries about Scotland maybe your right. Besides I want to get this thing going with as much support as possible - and I suppose by ignoring yee things would'nt work so well. Anyways change made, Nigeria it is from midnight Sunday. → CGorman (Talk) 18:01, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Don't bother with votes?
editVoting doesn't seem worth it with only a few voters. Shall we just agree what to do next? Perhaps we could go Norway->Bhutan->Eritrea (the order in which they were voted for, I think) Dan100 (Talk) 23:20, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Good idea. —MESSEDROCKER (talk) 03:38, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Educational experience
editWhile it's not seeing huge support among editors, I am personally finding this a great experience. When I wrote about small arms today, I began wondering why the government would want to be cracking down so. Searching on Google News revealed to me what is happening in the Niger Delta - I had no idea. Dan100 (Talk) 12:51, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Central America
editI suggest you focus on some Central American countries. The CA category is almost empty. -- Redge (Talk) 08:52, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Useful site
editIf you can get past the bad design and annoying pop-ups, www.newspapers.com is a great way to find links to obscure country newspapers... including two on Bhutan. Lyellin 23:30, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ilya is a smart cookie
editOver at the water cooler Ilya has put up a great proposal for info boxes about different countries (see example). Yay or nay to creating an infobox to be cut and pasted onto each article for the week? ~The bellman | Smile 12:04, 1 May 2005 (UTC)
main page says fiji as cotw this say baulraus (i can't sell)
editIt should be Belarus because in the event of a draw (both had 4 votes) the oldest goes through. → CGorman (Talk) 20:05, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
... Antarctica?!
editThe country of the week is Antarctica? With zero votes? Antarctica isn't even a country! It's a continent! How the heck did this one slip under the radar?! 67.68.224.206 07:38, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

Renaming page to "Featured Country"
editThe project page should definitely be renamed to "Wikinews:Featured Country". This feature has been becoming less "of the week" and more "whenever the hell we want". If we rename it to "featured country", it would be less of an embarrassment to Wikinews. —MESSEDROCKER (talk) 01:45, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
The Map
editI'm a bit colour-blind, and I must say that this map is a nightmare for colour-blind people to understand. Can it be made with a scale of decreacing shades of a single colour? (ex: "25+" would be dark blue, "0" would be white, and anything in between would be gradual shades of light blue?) Or perhaps in black and white? --Munchkinguy 17:58, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
