Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

editWhere did File:ECCOconcert 20140221.jpg come from? Who was the photographer?
Btw, I tagged ECCO Music Concert in London with a list of some needed improvements. --Pi zero (talk) 03:33, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
- The photo was taken by Rajan Shanthi, my daughter who lives in Walthamstow, London. My grandson is performing in the orchestra, playing the Indian music instrument 'Mridangam'. My daughter's E-mail ID is tsivashanthi at yahoo.com - Uksharma3 (talk) 03:47, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for improving the article. I have left some feedback with my review. Currently there is an important issue — a copyright one — preventing publication, with additional questions I asked at the article talk page. Gryllida 07:30, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
- I have done my maximum possible within my knowledge and rewritten the article taking your questions into consideration. There is no copyright or promotional sentences now. There may be any grammatical errors but otherwise the article contains only facts. The only point that I cannot give source is the list of songs played in the concert. It was told by my grandson who performed in the orchestra. If that cannot be accepted, you can remove that sentence. Thanks in advance for approving. - Uksharma3 (talk) 00:20, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
- I'm very sorry if things haven't been working out for you here. I was hoping we could help you get that article into publishable shape. Our model of wiki-based news production can work, but the first thing we need to do for a new contributor is successfully explain how it works, and we try really hard to do that, but we don't always figure out what we most need to say to a given new contributor.
- The biggest difficulty with your article right now, that I can see, is that a reviewer can't tell where you got the information. For example, how do you know how many musicians there were, and how many parents attended? It also seems that, in order for the reader to understand what kind of event this was, there ought to be some indication of how big an audience this was; not that one needs a precise head count, but some idea of the size. From the way the article is written one might think the audience consisted of ten parents, except that, on careful inspection, there were more than that because there are more than ten audience just in the picture provided.
- Again, I'm sorry if things haven't been working out for you here. --Pi zero (talk) 11:56, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind cooperation, Pi zero. I have now placed a request both on the article and on the image pages to remove them. I am living in India and I wrote the article with the information given by my 11-year old grandson who lives in London and a member of the ECCO orchestra at Walthamstow. As a contributor to Wikipedia both in English and in Tamil, I thought I will write this story in Wikinews as it is an event and not suitable for Wikipedia, as an encouragement to the boy and his colleagues. I do not know the number of audience; neither the boy. I doubt whether even the organisers would have known the exact number as the admission was free. Now I understand your attitude. Whatever I say or do, you are determined not to allow the story to be published. I am positive you have some form of hatred, otherwise, this is not a big story that would bring about a world war if the statistics are not given correctly. I do not want to see any more of you. Sorry for this blunt statement but I think if I continue with you, I might fall ill. - Uksharma3 (talk) 13:37, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
As a reporter, it would seem you would've been able to ring the event organizer and retrieve the requested information on the event size. (If you can get that done before Thursday, that's fine, regarding the freshness.) —Gryllida 15:04, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
- I thank you for all what you have done, Gryllida. I have requested to remove the article. So, let us forget about this. Rgds. - Uksharma3 (talk) 17:30, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
- Part of this concert can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENW1bZTc6Yc - Uksharma3 (talk) 17:44, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
