Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

-- Wikinews Welcome (talk) 06:31, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
After post message below, notify the existence of the message on my talk (can be written in English).
If you believe your article is complete and ready for publication, you should submit it for review; I've added a {{develop}} tag, so there should be a button for submitting it. Regarding our review process (and other aspects of how the project works), see WN:PILLARS. --Pi zero (talk) 20:57, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
- The "review comments" explain what the problem is. Here is the key line:
- We require two mutually independent sources. (We also recommend reading all of them before starting to write.)
- For a "synthesis" article on English Wikinews, you must use two or more sources that are independent of each other. Your article lists two sources, but they are both from Agência Brasil, and they are both by Graça Adjuto and Augusto Queiroz. So, they are not independent of each other. --Pi zero (talk) 22:47, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Synthesis articles
editWe're interested in news from Brazil. In order to publish through en.wn, though, you need to understand how we operate.
We don't publish news articles from some other news agency. We do publish "synthesis" articles. A synthesis article draws on information from two or more sources, and is written in your own words (not copying phrases from the sources).
Choose a current event to write about: something specific that has happened within the past day or two. This current event is called the focus.
Then, choose two or more sources, independent of each other, that are about the focal event.
Read your sources before you start to write. When you do start to write, your first paragraph (lede) should give very short answers to basic questions about the focus, and then your later paragraphs should provide details and background. This is called inverted pyramid style.
WN:PILLARS may be helpful. --Pi zero (talk) 16:55, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
The article you submitted for review is no longer fresh. Plus, there is only one news source. Until there is not any other independent source to verify this thing, I am afraid, I will never publish.

- I am sorry for your experience. But please don't be disheartened. You have a welcome message at the top of your talk page. You should read it first.
They have the links to the guidelines page. Wikinews is very different from Wikipedia since the time factor is important. Plus we have very less editors here. Let me try:
- Wikinews:Writing an article: This will give you idea how to write articles here.
- Wikinews:Article layout in a nutshell: This will give you the idea of the layout.
- Style guide It is similar to the Manual of Style that is on Wikipedia.
I am sorry that I am not explaining properly. It is my college lecture time. I will do it once I have time.
Till then, you can read from the welcome message.
Sorry again.

Amsterdam related article
editHello, Saskeh. Please note that article is no longer fresh. And submitting the article without addressing former review concerns is considered disruptive.

- I see the Kirkuk article came from Spanish Wikinews which came from the Dutch version. Just to let you know, the fuente template on Spanish Wikinews is compatible with English Wikinews, and just like the {{w}} template there, we use it here to link to Wikipedia articles.

Just wondering, why are you removing the inter wikilinks? Any good reason to do so?
