Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Hi
editHi Pitille02 :-)
I've reviewed as 'too old to be news'. Not your fault: you wrote of it straight on the next day. Here are the issues that prevented the article from being published:
- Language barrier leading to grammar and punctuation errors.
- Inexperience leading to 5W not being answered in first paragraph.
- Inexperience leading to issues with neutrality.
- Misquote in the initial submission.
- Reviewer not trimming the article to remove unverified information.
- Back and forth between yourself and reviewer awaiting the issues fixed and assessing what else needs to be done.
- Lack of interaction on live chat (WN:IRC) as it is easier, for me at least, to read than the entirety of recent changes on-wiki.
- Many, I would say most, other contributors were not aware of the article existence and as a result were unable to offer assistance. I welcome your proposals how users can get notified of the drafts and their status to have an opportunity to get involved.
- Does @Michael.C.Wright have something to add to this feedback?
- Privmsg me on IRC to get your 'always online' Quassel IRC account setup?
You are welcome to write a story about something fresher, now; I will try to offer you as much support as I can.

- @Gryllida But I will never write anything on Wikinews, they made it clear to me that they are incompetent in doing their job, this does not seem like a collaborative project, this is an execution in every sense of the word, they never gave me help and @Michael.C.Wright He did nothing but flee cowardly. They have disappointed me because I literally tried my hardest. how sad. Pitille02 (talk) 04:07, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: I would add that it is first and foremost the author's responsibility to provide sources for all information. It is not a requirement that a reviewer remove unsourced information on a failed review. My review did not hold up publication in regards to unsourced information. The author held up publication by not providing sources for all information. This was the first article written by this author and therefore learning by doing is the best course of action. Further, unsourced information was not the only reason the article failed review, as communicated in my third review[1]. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 13:46, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ok,
- To speed it up in review comments we can write 'author needs to either provide a supporting source or remove this part'.
- Afaik when I make a new draft or edit an article there is, by default, no automatic notification nor email to me about new messages on article talk page. I'll make a sock account in a few minutes to test this.
- There is no feature for a user to get notified each time a article is created, or each time a article is added to a category, through Echo. 'Subscribe' to Category:Disputed is not a thing. Why not?
- It is probably debatable whether reviewer can remove a big chunk and remain uninvolved in editing. What are your thoughts on this?
- Thanks, Gryllida (talk) 00:41, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
