Hey!
editRemember me, from SEWQ? Just thought I'd drop in and say hello, after seeing your name in recent changes. Nice to see you around here. tempodivalse 03:28, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- Of course, good to see you. I stop by here once in a while, though I'd like to get more active in the future. Do you have any suggestions on where a newbie like myself could start? Thanks. :) Juliancolton (talk) 03:30, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'd recommend checking out Wikinews:Introduction to get started out. The single most important thing you could do here is probably to write some articles -- we currently are lucky to get much more than 6-7 stories a day, so any help you can give us there would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions or need help, just ask me at my talk.
- P.S. I know you've been welcomed before, but since then we've developed a much nicer welcome template, which I think is more informative, so I'll send it out to you now:
Welcome to Wikinews

Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

- Awesome, thanks! –Juliancolton | Talk 21:41, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I wasn't online at the moment so I didn't have a chance to review the article (looks like someone else did). You did an great job, though - you've learned the "news style" of writing very quickly. One minor point, the sources should generally be in chronological order of publishing date, newest at the top and oldest at the bottom. Otherwise, excellent. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 14:04, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Contractions ... you mean words like "didn't", "couldn't"? Yes, they are acceptable. Tempodivalse [talk] 17:40, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Alright, thanks. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:45, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

NC Terror sting article
editThanks for catching that. I thought I had gotten all of the direct quotes, but I missed that one. It now cites the sources directly. Is there anything else I need to fix? --Jayron32.talk.contribs 03:12, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

User "Juliancolton" is now an administrator
editCongratulations! You've been op'd. May I proudly present to you the admin Segway. Sorry we don't have anything cooler, but both the admin-mobile and admin-cycle were stolen off with. You'll just have to settle with the Segway, and don't break it, because it's damn expensive. Anyways, enjoy your power, abuse the peons, so on and so forth - you know the drill. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 18:40, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Request for CU
editI notice you closed the request, but it hasn't yet been open for seven days. (I don't think it is a race to 25 votes). Also, it might be good to let a steward close it as they will need to make the change in user permissions (as far as I understand it). Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:43, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, nevermind. Cirt seems to have been granted the powers per this. Weird though, it didn't show up in the user rights log. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:49, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- It isn't displayed in the local user rights log because the stewards changed Cirt's user rights from Meta, not locally. Tempodivalse [talk] 22:19, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- That cause you gotta look here SVT. The steward actions are done "Cross wiki" from meta, so the logs on meta. Only things we do (promote admins/crats/editors) will be kept here (Even de-ops will be on meta). --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 22:20, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Protected edit requests
editPlease, when you review a request submitted with the template {{editprotected}} edit the request when you are done to change to using {{tl|editprotected}}. This takes the talk page out of the appropriate category and stops it being listed on WN:AAA. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:58, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
- I've been doing that, haven't I? –Juliancolton | Talk 12:00, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
- I found a couple on WN:AAA that had Pakistan-related cats added, the request marked as done, but the template still there. Then I got distracted with {{source}}. --Brian McNeil / talk 12:21, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, I must have forgotten a few. I'll be more careful in the future, thanks for the note. –Juliancolton | Talk 12:23, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

- Of course he's a noob! His WP talk page has elements with the blink attribute. I know, they're in red, but I know enough about typsetting to know that they're displayed at significantly less than 48 point. :-P --Brian McNeil / talk 23:32, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
- It isn't blinking anymore :P (It only blinks for my offline status indicator ;) ). Best, Mifter (talk) 23:50, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Reviewing
editWhen reviewing an article, please look to make sure no one is copy editing or the likes. Just a friendly heads up :) Keep up the good work! DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 17:07, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

- Hehe, thanks! :) –Juliancolton | Talk 17:21, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Hi, any chance you could review the above article? I noticed you're online today. I generally don't like pestering people to review my articles, however this one has been in the queue for over a day and risks getting stale soon if not published. It should be easy to review, it's a VOA-based article. Thanks, Tempodivalse [talk] 14:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
- Done I saw your note. Tris 14:56, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I went offline shortly after your post. Thanks for the help Tris! –Juliancolton | Talk 16:09, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
- No worries. Thanks for your review, Dotty. Tempodivalse [talk] 16:38, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I went offline shortly after your post. Thanks for the help Tris! –Juliancolton | Talk 16:09, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
- Do be careful with VOA articles! Tempo is wrong, "it should be easy to review" neglects the fact that you must be particularly aware of certain assumptions and language which reflect the point of view that the United States government wishes to project to the rest of the world. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:51, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- I meant "easy to review" in the sense that verifiability and copyvio checks are usually less difficult to do in VOA articles. One should of course be very careful about POV issues. Tempodivalse [talk] 23:03, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Promoting people to editor status
editHi, Julian! I noticed your promotion of MBisanz (talk · contribs) to Editor status in the RC today. I thought i'd just point out that all requests for the Editor flag generally should go through WN:FRRFP first (it's a policy). Imho, being "trusted" isn't quite enough for obtaining the Editor flag, one should also have demonstrated some understanding the style guide. I'd suggest that in the future, you nominate a user through WN:FRRFP first and get at least a few users' approval before promoting (instead of immediately granting the flag). Cheers. Tempodivalse [talk] 23:01, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, well, I was under the impression that the aforementioned page was more for self-nominations, and other users could be promoted by admins' discretion. I'll keep your note in mind, however. Thanks! –Juliancolton | Talk 00:35, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
