Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, Jon (WMF)! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Re main page
editRe this change could you please summarize the meaning of the planned change, here, please? Thank you. --Gryllida (talk) 21:50, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- Sure! No problem! (writing from my non-staff account right now) At the end of the month, I am planning a technical change that will be made to the mobile site which will treat the main page like any other page on the wiki. As a result mobile main pages (using the Minerva skin) will no longer run the PHP optimisations of MobileFrontend. More information in this the newly scheduled tech notice.
- The change I made on your behalf was a good faith edit to avoid disruption to the English Wikinews project, by adding a compatibility stylesheet in Template:Main_Page/minerva.css that applies styles for the Minerva skin only so that your project doesn't need to do anything to prepare for this change (unless t wa. You should feel free to expand these, revisit them or even remove them entirely (although I'd be interested in your thinking around this choice). Please use this test url to see how wikinews looks enwikinews before and after the upcoming change.
- There is more background if you need it on mw.org and phab:T32405 phab:T138622 phab:T246401. Hope that helps and happy to answer any follow up questions! Jdlrobson (talk) 15:50, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining, Jdlrobson. But I must say: the newer version will make things visible on the main page which we do not want to be visible. If there is a way to stop that from happening, could you please tell us? Is it just because of the CSS rules?
