Wikinews:Arbitration Committee/CheckUser and oversight requests

edit

There are two requests in relation to CheckUser and oversight which require the approval of the Arbitration Committee before they are presented to Wikimedia stewards for action to be taken. I would ask you to review these two requests:

  1. User:Brianmc has recently been elected to the committee and requests CheckUser and oversight
  2. User:Chiacomo hasn't been re-elected and has been inactive on the project since March, User:Adambro has suggested his privileges are revoked.

I would appreciate your input, as a member of ARBCOM which I understand has the final say on whether a user has these rights, on these two requests. Adambro 14:12, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Input provided. Thanks for calling this to my attention, Adambro! -- IlyaHaykinson 23:59, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image credit on Template:Lead article with large image

edit

Hi,

As the template utilises the image, it needs to provide a direct link to some form of attribution (per the CC and GFDL licences which is has been placed under). Having the user go to the subject of the template in order to click on something else is not acceptable - and indeed the whole prospect of attribution can be missed if the user follows the link to the Apple Portal. The attribution doesn't need to be in the form I placed it - some <small></small> text could be placed under it linking to the image page, but having no attribution is not an option. Thanks, Martinp23 21:30, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I, Martinp23, award you this shiny device as some sort of recognition for your initiative and work on Template:Lead article with large image. Thanks! 21:40, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar. I'll open a discussion about the attribution question somewhere appropriate — I feel that use of the image does not have always include attribution in exactly the same place as where the image is used, as long as it's findable. For the time being I'll enable to default imagemap "blue-i" feature which places the information link in the corner of the image automatically. -- IlyaHaykinson 22:03, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I liked your approach. -- IlyaHaykinson 22:13, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for doing that - looks a lot better than my version! As far as I know from my reading of the CC licences, attribution needs to be obvious wherever the image is displayed. The rules may be different for GFDL. However, IANAL, but better safe than sorry :) Martinp23 23:42, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Just a note that the image as it is laid out at this moment, has a quirk. The last word, "Greece" overruns the image and spills out into the white space just a little on the right-hand side. I am using Firefox, if that helps. --Jcart1534 23:15, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Interesting... what computer platform are you on (OS and browser)? What's your screen resolution? I'll decrease the font size to fix the problem, in the meanwhile. -- IlyaHaykinson 23:19, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am using Ubuntu Linux 6.10, Firefox 2.0.0.6, and have a screen resolution of 1400x1050. I should mention too that the phrase "More from Greece" is broken into 2 lines. "More from" on a line above the word "Greece", which is on a new line. On my Windows box with IE it looks fine. By the way, the title "Forest fires burn in Greece" looks fine now. The change you made worked. All the words fit within the image. Cheers, --Jcart1534 23:31, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I made the div for More from Greece a bit wider. I'll get myself a VM with Ubuntu installed so I can check a few of these out... I think the moral of the story is "always assume you'll need more space than you think you need to make it fit". -- IlyaHaykinson 23:37, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Looks great now! --Jcart1534 23:44, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ticker

edit

Thanks :) At the moment, it's customisable in your monobook.css, but that's all. I'm just going to arrive at a method that looks good. Any suggestions? TheFearow 00:44, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Also, you can see what it would look like on the mainpage at User:TheFearow/MP. Feel free to change. TheFearow 00:47, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll try that - right now it waits 5 seconds after typing it out - i'm considering putting that up to about 7. Also, please purge your cache, i've done some bigger updates to make it look MUCH better on the main page :) TheFearow 00:55, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, what exactly is broken? Can you click the javascript error button (bottom left in statusbar on IE6) and tell me what the error is? TheFearow 01:15, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think I know what it is - AJAX is horribly in IE. Does it display the "Recent stories" text or does it display nothing at all? TheFearow 01:16, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yep, it's the AJAX issue I thought it was. Sadly, it's unavoidable, but at least it works reliably for Firefox and most other non-IE browsers. TheFearow 01:23, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm considering getting this implemented; the version on User:TheFearow/MP looks great, and the major issues have been resolved. Who is best to ask to implement? Also, do you think using importScript (loading from my userspace) is possible, so I can update the script if necessary? Thanks! TheFearow 01:44, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll stop the error coming up for IE. Just note this will NOT work in IE - the bug is in IE, not my script. I'll just disable the entire thing for IE, so no errors come up. TheFearow 02:51, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
IE's AJAX doesn't allow forcing a MIME type, making the received content unusable. It also requires all sorts of other stuff to be changed. TheFearow 02:55, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Lastly, would you object to having it use importScript to load from my userspace? It allows me to update the script with bugpatches etc. TheFearow 02:56, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
In that case, could you implement it? All that needs doing is renaming it to User:TheFearow/public/ticker.js, importing it in MediaWiki:Common.js, adding to mainpage, and deleting the old redirect from User:TheFearow/ticker.js. TheFearow 03:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

And it looks great :) I'm going to put the speed of the typing up a little bit, but no other big changes. TheFearow 03:17, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ahh :) I better fix that, will do now. TheFearow 10:02, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have programmed custom tickers, which can be seen at Wikinews:Newsroom and Portal:Football. I will implement any new ones on request. TheFearow 04:32, 31 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Portal:Football

edit

I registered today because I saw that Portal:Football was very out of date. I have written a few articles so far today and will do every day to keep this updated. I was thinking of an idea though but I wanted to ask a sysop first.

Could we 'employ' users to be football writers for their team. So if this goes ahead there would be a group of users per team who will write up the latest news and match reports for Wikinews. The team links would be Portal:Football/LeagueName/ClubName. So for Celtic it'd be Portal:Football/SPL/Celtic. If you go to Portal:Football you will see that the fixture list has been updated, the featured results has been updated and that I am going to start a major revamp of Portal:Football. I am going to ask Dark Squall to help me as most of his contributions are football related topics.

Thanks. Please send your comments to me ASAP. Celticfan383 01:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your very quick reply. I am just making minor changes currently. I agree with the only make a team page if it'll be updated rule. I was thinking of a great idea just currently which I will demonstrate on the Celtic page soon. Thanks for supporting my ideas! Celticfan383 01:17, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I cannot believe you are publishing this. I can't even find a single reference to this so-called opposition group, Smena. All it is a video of a woman feed paper into a machine. We have no evidence of anything about it or even when it was made. --SVTCobra 04:20, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I left a comment on the talk page. The group is legit in that it is mentioned by major newspapers as a "youth opposition movement". I did a search in Russian for "движение СМЕНА", which means "movement SMENA" and got a number of hits including one from kommersant.ru — which is a major newspaper in Saint Petersburg. -- IlyaHaykinson 04:23, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

intersection extension

edit

Hi, I am a sysop on italian wikibooks. I saw you are the author of the intersection extension; this extension is very good but as now it cannot show an alphabetical list of pages, that can only be ordered by lastedit or categoryadd mode.

I was interested in having alphabetical order mode so I have developed it in the extensions by adding this two three code lines at line 196:

	case 'alphabetical':
		$sOrderMethod = 'alphabetical';
		break;

and this code at line 340 (343 if you have added the lines above):

	else if ('alphabetical' == $sOrderMethod)
		$sSqlWhere .= ' ORDER BY page_title ';

I tried the code and it seems to work well. Do you think it is possible add this code to the stable revision? Thank you :-) --Ramac (talk) 14:59, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please help to document the extension, for my purposes its usage (and compatibility) is completely undocumented, see [1]. Many thanks for programming this, but at the moment no non-insider can use it. --Vigilius 05:56, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. That edit really shouldn't have been self-sighted; just make the edit and leave it for someone else to peer-review. Policy in place since early 2010 prohibits self-sighting of substantive edits to published articles; it's self-publication. This specific edit both tinkered with the meaning, so would have benefited from a second set of eyeballs for safety's sake, and was, as you pointed out in the edit summary, unusual in that it was far past the horizon for substantive changes (now 24 hours after publication btw), so that leaving it for someone else to sight would have insulated you by distributing the judgment call between two people. (I actually did peer-review it myself, after the fact, and it passed. :-) --Pi zero (talk) 12:02, 21 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

DPL thanks and proposals

edit

Dear IlyaHaykinson, first I would like to thank You very much for the excellent tool of DynamicPageList for Wikimedia. In Czech Wikinews we use it and after we had solved few issues we are very satisfied. I am not a fan of technical tools, anyway I think this is one of the few that are really useful. So thanks a lot.

And now a thing that I write for, but in fact - as I write it now, I believe it is less important than the thanks before: I would propose two small(?) enhancements of the DPL. First is a possibility to select and sort the articles randomly, second is a possibility to add the category sortkey to the list - as can be the date added through addfirstcategorydate. What do You think about such idea? And how should I propose it - through the buglist?

Once again thanks for Your work and also for Your possible answer. Okino (talk) 12:55, 6 January 2012 (UTC) (on cs.wnReply

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.

DynamicPageList

edit

Hi,

I am a user from Turkish Wiktionary, and lately I have been working on the category tree module. I wasn't able to copy the English version into Turkish Wikt., it was so complex. So, I decided to create a new one. It works very well at this point. We started using the module through some templates on most categories. But there is an addition in the English version of the module. As you can see here, there is a table at the right of the page gives us info about recent additions and oldest pages. I want to do the same thing on Turkish Wiktionary, but to do that I need to activate (I guess) DynamicPageList feature. Found a page on MediaWiki: Extension:DynamicPageList (Wikimedia), it talks about the exact same thing, but it cannot be used on Turkish Wiktionary. Saw your name in the page, and if you could help me how to use this extension on our wiki, I would be very pleased. Thanks! ~ Z (m) 16:57, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, it's been more than 10 years since I've touched that code, or worked with the extension. I'm afraid I can't help you. :-( -- 47.151.142.62 (talk) 06:57, 4 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ilya, I'm just reading what you posted there, about the need for changes, and I very much agree. Imho one part of the solution has to be to tap on Wikipedia's resources, not only by reusing content here (the license incompatibility has to be solved, though), but also by making it more attractive for WP editors to contribute here. So, I posted some discussion points at Wikinews talk:For Wikipedians. Would be great if you gave some feedback on this. Thx, and keep on fighting for changes! Thanks. I'll read and follow up when I can. I don't want to be fighting the community to do what it doesn't seem to want to do though. -- IlyaHaykinson (talk) 21:55, 8 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
