Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Languages?

Hi ICameHereForNews :-)

Welcome to Wikinews.

Regarding this news about plainrock124, it seems that relevance is the largest concern. Would you like to share news about something else that has more significant impact? Just a headline and a couple URLs to sources would suffice for a start.

Seeing that your user page does not say a lot at the moment. Here are a few questions which are of interest (commonly highlighted on the user page). Do you speak any languages other than English? Do you program -- if so, in what languages? What are your topics of most interest in regards to news?

Thanks, --Gryllida (talk) 09:13, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

No I don’t speak another language. Also I have expanded my user page a bit. Thanks, ICameHereForNews (talk) 06:27, 29 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Re: Plainrock124 hits 1 million subscribers

How many YouTube channels have 1 million subscribers? Can you find out? This could help with analysing this article.

Also, as an exercise, it would be great to know the exact date when this channel reached this many subscribers.

Thanks, --Gryllida (talk) 11:03, 28 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Gryllida: I think it was in February 2020. There are a lot of channels that have 1 million subscribers, but this is more recent. ICameHereForNews (talk) 00:59, 29 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
A lot -- how many? Gryllida (talk) 07:55, 29 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Published by Pi zero just now.

The essential information missing in the initial draft was the 5Ws and the H in the first paragraph.

There was a delay as I was offline on the first week and could not expand.

It was possible to refresh as the stores lowered the limits.

Please click 'History' tab and go through the edit history, viewing each of the changes.

This may help you see how the improvements were made (by other authors, and by the reviewer).

Thank you for starting the story. Keep up the great work!

Regards, --Gryllida (talk) 22:19, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Just curious......

You still working on the Tom Hanks article??--Bddpaux (talk) 19:55, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Bddpaux: I haven’t been on wikinews lately. However, I might as well make some contributions to it now. ICameHereForNews (talk) 10:42, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Tom Hanks and his wife catch coronavirus

Hi. I reviewed this article, and wrote up a set of review comments; I was trying to be as helpful as possible in explaining the various points, which made the comments long-ish. See my review comments, and also the detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 12:16, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's not uncommon for a first article to just take a bit too long to pull together, because there is so much to learn at first. It can still be a big learning experience. In that spirit, I left an additional note on the talk page. --Pi zero (talk) 03:15, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
