Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Football?
editYeah. It is good to know you are interested in sports article. So now I know someone who will help me cover soccer news. But the thing that happened today, let's distribute the share. I prefer La Liga, international football, and UEFA Champions League. I have also written about the FA Cup, Premier League and would like to cover Bundesliga. I would try to cover Italian football also, basically match reports. Currently, after the season finishes, I would pick up Olympics, Copa America and Euro 2016. Let me know if you have similar plans. We can share. Let me know which about the leagues you are interested in.

El Derbi
editHello! Congratulations for the publication of Leicester City wins first Premier League as Spurs and Chelsea held for 2-2 draw. I just wanted to know if you are going to write for Real Madrid v Manchester City news article? Well, I will see your work some hours later. You are doing good. But I hope we don't clash for the Milano final on 28th.
And sorry for the delay, but on the behalf of Wikinews I present you the modest pencil!

Greetings! Thanks for all your help as well. I will try to write about Real Madrid/Manchester City, but it might only be tomorrow as I have quite a lot of work to complete before I am free again. I don't think we should clash. You are more than welcome to create the page when the time comes. I'll probably just check in to see how it reads and maybe make minor changes as the story develops. --Handraulic (talk) 17:30, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
Some templates you would require for soccer articles
editHere is the list of templates a football match report might need (and what they would result in):
Atletico article
editOccasionally the review queue gets glutted with more articles than we can handle in time; yesterday was the first time in months I'd seen eight articles on the review queue simultaneously. I feel bad. This particular article may already be stale (haven't had a chance to look closely yet), because staleness depends on when information came to light rather than the publication dates on particular articles. (We are working, long-term, on semi-automated tools to aid review so this sort of thing happens less.) --Pi zero (talk) 10:55, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
Not a problem. Thanks for all the help thus far. I think it'll still be a while before I'm use to the format of things on here, but I think I'm slowly getting there. I'm actually thinking about writing about the match that took place on Wednesday, although it might be considered too old to publish. --Handraulic (talk) 11:40, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
Recent article......
editSorry, but this: Atlético through to Champions League Final courtesy of Griezmann's away goal failed review. Please read my comments and submit a new article! --Bddpaux (talk) 22:21, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me. I'm still getting the hang of things here. So, should I attempt to simplify it or just leave it? --Handraulic (talk) 22:30, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
- (Putting in my two cents.)
- Since it's lost freshness, I recommend you just note the criticism for future articles, and let this article go. --Pi zero (talk) 23:53, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
Roger that. Note taken. --Handraulic (talk) 07:52, 7 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi. We got a late start on this, then review delay. Hopefully the feedback in the review comments can be valuable moving forward. Review comments, review edit history. --Pi zero (talk) 19:25, 7 May 2016 (UTC)
- Published. See review comments, edit history. --Pi zero (talk) 22:46, 7 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks very much for your help and patience. I have found this experience most informative. I will try in future to get these kinds of articles out earlier. --Handraulic (talk) 23:15, 7 May 2016 (UTC)
Hello. I noticed that you made two edits to the article. I did not use The Guardian source and thus, I removed it.
If you observe, some claim that the contract is signed, and some say that they have agreed to offer a five-year contract. It is little sensitive: as the medical test is to be conducted before signing the contract.
Another thing; I did not edit the article for hours. If you want, you can write, complete, and submit the article for review. I remember I picked up NASA announces water on Mars written by someone else after it failed first review. I re-wrote the whole story. It is not just my story. We can collaborate.

- By the way, DFB Pokal Final (Der Klassiker), Coppa Italia, and the FA Cup final are on May 21. I would be travelling that night. I will start the story seven hours after the match when I reach home. You are planning to cover those events?

Football Clubs
editThere is a page on Wikinews where editors can join any football club (also more than one) they want. Saying more than one club, I don't mean joining FC Barcelona for it being Més que un club or having a situation like Alfredo Di Stéfano. After joining, the editors would write news about that particular club(s). There is no restriction to write for the club they did not sign for..but I am can't find that page at the moment. I always wanted to sign for it. Now that you have joined Wikinews, I have an opportunity to discuss it.
If you had to sign for one or more clubs, whom would you sign for?
By the way, this is not an indirect attempt to know which club(s) you support.
acagastya ⚽️ 🏆 🎾 🚀 🔬 👟 🎬 🎼 📰 18:15, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
- That's a tough one. I don't really support or follow any one club in particular. I am more of a neutral when it comes to football. --Handraulic (talk) 19:14, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
- That's odd! No team could win your support plying the most beautiful sport.

- It is a difficult concept for many people to understand. I appreciate football as a whole. There are many sports in this world, but football seems to tell the greatest stories. One can learn almost all there is to know about life from watching a single match of football. I admire an ever increasing number of teams, players and managers. But personally, I find the idea of supporting one team and one team only a strange one. --Handraulic (talk) 20:37, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
- I am not talking about just following one club. Yes, one can support one club, and also watch other clubs play. Sometimes, I find myself watching Süper Lig when I am free. Even though I do not follow any support clubs. But still sticking to the question, any league you would primarily focus for news articles?

editHey! I saw that you fixed some errors to the El Derby final article. Thanks for that. I can't believe that I misspelled Griezmann's name. But I wanted to tell you, if the attendance is not available, it is not an issue, since the parameter says ADD IF POSSIBLE. Good to have it, but if not possible, we need not to worry (for future articles)
acagastya ⚽️ 🏆 🎾 🚀 🔬 👟 🎬 🎼 📰 12:44, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Greetings! Not a problem. Thanks for the heads up on the attendance - I'll keep that in mind for future articles. I hope you don't mind, but I changed the title/moved the page. I hope that's not a problem. I decided to change it since not everyone understands Spanish and most of the readers are basic English speaking and might not know what that means. --Handraulic (talk) 12:55, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- Well, it is just a word (not even a phrase) and many English news websites also included it. I was discussing this with Pi zero. WN:SG#Headlines did not say anything about using foreign language. Plus, it adds meaning for all those who know (it is indeed a popular phrase in sports), it says why the event is unique and makes it interesting. (It would ignite readers' curiosity). I am restoring it. Later, if the review queue is tackled, we would update the style guide.

Not a problem. I'll leave that up to you. One positive aspect is that I now know how to go about renaming/moving pages which is something that confused me in the beginning. My understanding was that contributors write for a global audience, those who may not necessarily have as deep a knowledge of the game as you or I. Those who may only have a basic grasp of the sport may not have understood the beginning bit of the title and thus the meaning would be lost on them. I apologise if moving the page created problems as this was not my intention. --Handraulic (talk) 14:12, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- Well, we do mean to write for a global audience. Choosing headlines can be a subtle and subjective thing; with acagastya proposing that phrase in the headline, I was hoping it might be interesting, attention-getting without off-putting. --Pi zero (talk) 14:23, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- Decima- or decimal would mean ten for English readers. 'Un' will make them know it is eleven. But eleven what? They would read the article out of curiosity.
acagastya ⚽️ 🏆 🎾 🚀 🔬 👟 🎬 🎼 📰 15:24, 30 May 2016 (UTC)- In fact I've been floundering around trying to get the rest of the headline right. Probably stable now. --Pi zero (talk) 17:08, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Covering some sports news
editHello, Handraulic. I was wondering if you could cover Colombia v USA (Copa América's opening match) or Garbine Muguruza's French Open victory. I was not at home, plus there are other articles I am engaged in. We can delay French Open by a day, but I wanted to cover Garbine Muguruza Copa América's entire event. It would be a great help.
