A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor

  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome, Ernestogon! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Welcome edit

Hello, Welcome to Wikinews Ernestogon! I noticed your story on Pujols and pitched in a little to push it toward publication. I thought it was newsworthy and important on a couple of counts: Pujols is well known. He has a fan base that is widespread besides local concentrations in the D.R., Missouri and California. I tried to put it into context as some people who don't follow sports as much wouldn't know his history (years with St. Louis) or about his new contract with Anaheim. You can do this to in your next story -- Tell the larger story, too!

Please read the comments from the editors on the talk/collaboration page! You'll a lot learn from those. What distinguishes Wikinews from other citizen journalism sites is the quality of editing and amount of editor-writer interaction!

This was a very good first effort Ernestogon! Good for you. I hope it gets published. All the best, Crtew (talk) 14:25, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I just saw it was published -- that was fast! Congrats on your first article and I hope to see many more from you! Crtew (talk) 14:32, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Changes edit

Ernestogon, I noticed you added a "Review" template after the article was in publication. Please don't do this. What happens is if you want to make a change, you can do that. The editor sees the pending change and decides whether it is valid. But after publication, you can't add the review because it's already been reviewed. You might be used to Wikipedia where articles can change quite a bit even after publication. Because news is quick and fast paced in changes, only corrections and needed info is normally accepted. It takes getting used to if you're used to Wikipedia writing and editing. Crtew (talk) 14:48, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Btw: When an article is published, the date on it becomes the date of publication, which is what it remains thereafter. --Pi zero (talk)

Review edit

A great beginning to the baseball article...expand it a bit....and tighten up the English....it's almost there. Oh, and welcome!!! Bddpaux (talk) 20:00, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Cole article edit

I'm not too sure about the "stats compiler" statement.......stylistically, it may be OK......it's just a (written news) term I'm not too familiar with. Bddpaux (talk) 20:05, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

First paragraph edit

Hi. If you haven't, it is worth reading Wikinews:Style guide#The first paragraph again. who, what, where, when, why and how is very important. The when is often missing or not written correctly. "Monday" is not right if it was two days ago. It should be "Two days ago" or something like that. I'd also lead up to them by stating the when and where early in the text. Ideally, try to shove this into one sentence. The following are example first sentences from sport articles I have written:

  • Tonight, in the second match against the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) team before they play a three game test series against the Australia women's national softball team, the Japan women's national softball team beat the ACT team by a score of 10-0 after four innings when the game officially ended.
  • On Friday, the Aussie Spirit finished their test series against the Japan women's national softball team with a 6-5 victory, winning two out of seven games against the second ranked team in the world.
  • The Australian women's national water polo team took home first place at the VISA Water Polo International on Sunday, beating the United States team 6-5 in the final, holding on to a 4-3 lead at the half.
  • Earlier today, Capital Punishment, the Canberra based 50km and 100km mountain bike race, was unofficially won by Shaun Lewis in the 100km distance in about four hours.
  • In the opening round of the 2012 ANZ Championship this past weekend, the Southern Steel beat the Bay of Plenty Magic in Invercargill, New Zealand by a score of 49–47, while over in Brisbane, Australia, the defending champion Queensland Firebirds lost to the Melbourne Vixens by a score of 47–42.
  • Australian Shadow Olympic team member Odette Snazelle was in Tuggeranong ahead of Thursday and Friday's National Archery Championship target recurve event.
  • Nineteen year old Australian Shadow Olympic team member Alice Ingley was attending the second day of the National Archery Championships, a few days before the start of the target recurve event that she hopes to represent Australia at the Olympics in.
  • The second day of the Australian National Archery Championships was underway today at the Tuggeranong Archery Club in Canberra, with the field shooting competition being one of the highlights, as Australians in several bow classes were attempting to qualify for the World Archery Field Championships in August.

They should all answer those when, where, who, what and why this matters. Hope that can give you an idea style wise to help with the style in the first paragraph. --LauraHale (talk) 03:51, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Baseball player Cole Hamels suspended for five games edit

Hi. I've done a major edit on Baseball player Cole Hamels suspended for five games. I've fixed some things on the article by combining some of the sentences into one two quickly answer who, what, where, when and why this matters. There are some facts that are not getting in early enough and other facts that do not belong. He is an American player in an American baseball league. Thus, his being American does not matter. It matters MORE what team he plays for and his position. Saying "This American baseball player hit some one with a pitch" is not as important as "Team pitch name hit rookie for team player with a pitch." Thus, you're set up for the information. --LauraHale (talk) 20:50, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dates edit

Hi. I see you added May 6 here. On English Wikinews, the dating style is different than English Wikipedia. You would do that on English Wikipedia. On English Wikinews, you say "This past Monday", not May 6. Date will be relative to the date things are published. As this should be submitted on May 13, it should be easy enough to figure out the date relative to that. --LauraHale (talk) 00:22, 10 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

The May 7-13 week in baseball‎ sources edit

Hi. Can you put the SPECIFIC sources in the SPECIFIC section they apply to? Wikinews Shorts: April 2, 2012 is an example from ice hockey that puts the sources for a short article with the section. This will make the article much easier to review and be in line with the style guide for how to write shorts. Also, if you are copying your work from Spanish Wikinews, please provide a link on the collaboration page which says this so reviewers know you are doing this. Otherwise, your work may have copyright issues. --LauraHale (talk) 01:11, 10 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
