I would note that all recent vandal IPs appear to be from the Tor network. Not sure how often you get vandals, but we ended up just banning the whole Tor range, and found vandalism from both IPs and manufactured users dropped significantly. GreenReaper 07:34, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Revert

Hi, i see you just reverted the edit mad by me earlier stating that it screwed the look up, however i changed it to make it look better on my screen at home which now, before my edit and after the revert, has a paragraph sized whit space in the middle of the article. Deletion

Hi, i see you have deleted one of my nominated deletions for redirects and i am going to add many more broken redirect pages to the speedy delete catergory. However they do not show up on the Admin board as the template will not include due to the redirect over ride. Would you like me to keep adding the templates for you to see the pages in the speedy delete category, leave you to find the pages on broken redirects page or leave you alone completely and annoy another admin?? Image of missing boy

this image: [1] is copyvio. It is from a source that we compete with and they either contacted the family for the image or they paid for it. Neither of which we have done. i am not aginst the image but it needs to be uploaded from a source that allows their material to be copied.

Iraq Body Count and Bagdhad casualties

Hi Doldrums. I just wanted to discuss this a bit more.

According to data compiled by Iraq Body Count (IBC), a volunteer project that maintains a database of civilian deaths in Iraq from media reports, at least 393 people died in and around Baghdad between February 15 and March 11.

How did you come up with that figure? Did you sift through Lily Hamourtziadou's two articles and keep a running tally? Because nowhere in those two sources do I find the number 393. I then went to IBC's database which they maintain for transparency. However, the most recent data there is for March 1. I tallied the numbers from Feb 15 to March 1 and came up with 72. Even doubling that number for the missing days still falls way short of any numbers mentioned.

I think that it is very dangerous to cite a source such as IBC as independent and/or neutral. It is very clear from their rationale and methodology statements that they represent a certain point of view and possibly have an axe to grind. "we want to only record those deaths to which we can unambiguously hold our own leaders to account." Yet the database includes items such as incident k5517: "20 bodies found shot, tortured, gunfire, executed, tortured." The Bush administration (sorry "our leaders") is unambiguously accountable for this?

The body count "also includes excess civilian deaths caused by criminal action resulting from the breakdown in law and order which followed the coalition invasion," but nowhere do I see what allowances they make for regular criminal action. Do they make allowances for regular sectarian violence? I mean, there must have been some, even under Saddam's iron rule.

Co-founder John Sloboda is a psychologist who used to write about music but now preaches non-violence. The other founder Hamit Dardagan seems to have been a computer teacher[3] although IBC calls him a "a freelance researcher currently working in London. He has made an in-depth study of the research methods of Professor Marc Herold, who pioneered a media-based methodology for estimating civilian deaths in the Afghan war." So he read a real professors work? That qualifies him how?

And who is Lily Hamourtziadou? My best guess is she is a volunteer that reads news articles on the web. That sounds a lot like what I do in my spare time.

And their list of Sources looks pretty impressive at first glance but what is Common Dreams? I would not consider them a legitimate news source. Intellnet.org obviously fails IBC's own requirement of regular updates. And nothing against Aviation Week & Space Technology but I don't think they have too many reporters on the ground in Iraq.

I am so sorry. I did not see you notes. I apologize for this and for my tally above, it was not even close to accurate. I think I must have missed the first several days of the period which included, among other things, the market place bombing that claimed 62 days. Any way, by my corrected tally I got 183 (not the low 72) which is close enough to your 200. Although I included them, they are using codes for sources that are not on their list. For example, k5512 neither source is on the list and I am not sure what VOI and Al-Shar are. --SVTCobra 20:13, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the link to the Brookings institution and the sources key. The list on IBC's about-page is out-of-date. I re-tallied again and got 199 this time. So, I must be pretty sloppy. The Brookings report interestingly uses IBC data and talks (page 13) about Iraq Ministry of Interior figures being 75% higher than IBC. The fact that they use that data does speak to IBC credibility. I saw your comments on my comments. I just want to let you know that I am working on a response. I am giving it considerable thought and I hope to convincingly illustrate my point. I agree with your collaboration request, this article ought be able to be published and hopefully through consensus. I have finished my response. I posted it on the talk page of the article, but I will include it here, too:

You and I have debated this issue before, most notably in the article Iraqi authorities say Baghdad violence has dropped sharply, where I took issue with you for presenting statistics from Iraq Body Count and New York Times. I felt that in an article that was about what somebody (in that case an Iraqi general) said did not need to be contradicted by statistics from other sources. That time I made my argument by attacking the credibility of those sources and eventually acquiesced, though I remained unconvinced (not about the credibility but the need for that information in the article).

This time it is similar, but also quite different. In retrospect, I think I should have made my argument on these grounds back then. What it all hinges upon is the need to present both sides to maintain a NPOV. WN:NPOV touches on this subject in A consequence: writing for the enemy.

At this point I think it is important to consider what the article is about. If we can agree that all articles about 'events in one shape or another, I think they can be broken down, into two main categories.

An article reporting about an event, such as an incident or action, should present both sides. For example, 15 Royal Navy sailors captured at gunpoint by Iranian guards would be totally POV if it did not present the Iranian view that the sailors were in Iranian waters.

On the other hand, an article reporting about an event such as an announcement, a speech, an interview, or a press conference, should not face the same demands. In these cases, the article is just reporting, what someone said or did, and can do so neutrally without presenting opposing views or refute what they said or did. We, as Wikinews, are just there to bear witness and report what we saw or heard (or read as is mostly the case for an internet based news agency). I call into evidence this article, Security Council recommends Ban Ki-moon for UN Secretary-General. This article reports on the event of the Security Council recommendation of Ban Ki-moon, which basically is an announcement. It would have been totally inappropriate to litter the article with information like so-and-so thought John Doe would be better etc. Likewise, it would have been inappropriate to include any of things that are in this section of Ban Ki-moon's Wikipedia page (Criticism). In fact, if one did so, I think that would be engaging the Security Council in debate.

Therefore, I recommend that the article about Gates (it is currently called Warning of 'ethnic cleansing' if US pulls out of Iraq, a headline that I disagree with) be published without statistics about casualties, death tolls, displaced peoples etc.

If it is published with that information, which I am not saying is inaccurate in any way, it also opens the door for the other side, which is to include the good things that are happening in Iraq. I know, sounds far fetched, but there are many public works projects taking place there. It becomes an open-ended article. We could end up having to include Saddam Husseins final statements or what Rush Limbaugh said last Tuesday (I don't actually know what he said last Tuesday or any day for that matter). Oh and we can't leave out Cindy Sheehan, and OBL himself might want to weigh in on this.

Ok, I got a little silly there at the end. But in conclusion I think this article should stay focused and on point, which is to report on what Gates said. All the other stuff belongs in other articles.
