Welcome
editAnchorman, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- If you're interested in audio recordings, Audio Wikinews could always use more contributers
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!--MarkieTalk 17:32, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

editPictures from news sources that we compete with such as First Coast news, has images that they pay for from the AP or otherwise and are copyrighted, so they cannot be used on Wikinews.

- as this is about an ongoing missing child alert, i think we have a good claim for using the photo, so i've restored the image and added them back to the article and main page lead. — Doldrums(talk) 21:26, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- The image - in all probability - originated with the family of the missing child, and if we could have got a copy from them we could have used that. Of course, now would not be a good time to bother them. If there hadn't been a free alternative I would have contacted First Coast and asked what the copyright on the image was, I'm sure we would have - eventually - got permission to use it.
- That brings me on to another thing, your username. Are you affiliated with First Coast News? If not then your username might be construed as misleading. You've not a high edit could so a rename is relatively trivial. Some of us even use our real names. (unlike EssJay). --Brian McNeil / talk 22:14, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Username
editI'll dig round or ask about a username change and let you know the procedure - I know it is possible if you've not too many edits, you see if you can dream up a new username. More later. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:24, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- That didn't take long... You want to look at this page. Take your time thinking about a new username; who knows if you'll get hooked on contributing and want things like accreditation? --Brian McNeil / talk 22:28, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- Your username move was done successfully by Cspurrier. Thunderhead ► 02:52, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
