Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Pakistan to elect interim prime minister on Tuesday

edit

Hi. The situation in Pakistan is certainly relevant. This article has some difficulties; a new contributor's first submission to Wikinews is often a massive learning experience, and I've tried my best to enhance this by explaining things in my review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 18:48, 31 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

It is possible that you wrote completely on your own, but the contents were too close to the sources. (Regarding copyright, you can't just write Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban word by word and claim it is your work. I have rewritten the article and submitted it for review. You can use this method to avoid "being too close to source" problem. List all the facts from sources as points. Look at the points and write in your own words. I literally write in a journal, but that is my preference. And I understand when we feel helpless when the sources have written in such a tone that we can't help but create instances of copyvio -- I have been there, and experienced that. You would learn with experience, that is for sure.

Pakistan

edit

I assume you are from Pakistan. I would be glad to help you write/review articles about stories from Pakistan. I hope to see you editing more often. I had a poor start when I joined Wikinews, but I learnt over time. I would really like to help you. Ping me whenever you are writing about anything, let it be about Pakistan or anything else. Or even if you need any help, or request any articles.

Yes I am from Pakistan. I would love to work as a reporter in an English daily from Pakistan, although I am an engineer by profession. Indeed, I would contact you in the future if I write an article related to Pakistan. I just read the article that was rewritten by you and assume that grammar of Wikinews is a little bit different from other newspapers or sources. Literally, I wrote the article in my own wording and tone. The misconception was due to the habit of reading English dailies. Thanks for help.--Asadwarraich (talk) 11:08, 8 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
You will learn with practice -- and you can use the archived articles, in case you need to know how things were done. Oh, by the way, can you please suggest me reliable news sources which focuses on news stories from Pakistan?
acagastya PING ME! 11:14, 8 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
There are many news sources but credible ones are Geo News (Webdesk), Dawn Newspaper (an English daily being published since independence), Express Tribune (another English daily being run by country's third biggest media house Express Media Group) and The News International.--Asadwarraich (talk) 12:41, 8 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

The article is published. Pakistan: At least 18 killed, others wounded in suicide attack at Balochistan Sufi shrine. The edit history got messed up. But well, have a look. I tell this to everyone, and I will tell you: observe how others are doing things. You will learn a lot from observing and absorbing (those habits).

Well, you say you are an engineering student in University of Taxila, that is interesting. I remember when we had Taxila in history when I was in sixth grade. (That is the only thing I remember, I hated history then) And mom told me it was called तक्षशिला. A place I wanted to visit, after I visited Dholavira.

Yes, I am studying in final year of civil engineering at Taxila Engineering University, only engineering university in Punjab after Engineering University Lahore. Taxila has very important historical background, being an important archaeological site. Our university is situated about 3km from ancient remains of Sirkap, Gandhara Temple and Dharmarajika Stupa. Visit Taxila if you ever come to Pakistan.--Asadwarraich (talk) 14:00, 9 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Note on neutrality

edit

Using the word "terror" is not neutral.
