Chart

edit

The graph is nice, but it seems to show temperatures didn't go above 38°C. Why the disconnect between the chart and the article? Cheers, --SVTCobra 13:42, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

To further SVT's point, I would change the temperature scale. If you are talking about 38°C and at no point goes lower than 20ish, there is no reason why you should have a scale from 0 to 100. It looks like your using Excel for this, which means it maybe difficult to do that, WolframAlpha could probably do it better. AZOperator (talk) 17:01, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@AZOperator: The left-hand scale is relative humidity in % 0-90 ... the temperature scale on the right in °C goes from 0-45. Cheers, --SVTCobra 17:18, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
The BOM data indeed did not record the temperatures to go above 40C. This is something the news sources do not explain. At home I did measure 40.7C. Gryllida (talk) 23:02, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I presume this is because they update the weather station data every 10 minutes but only a 30 minutes interval report is available on the website of now. A weatherzone table confirms the maximum to be data from the Sydney Airport (AP) weather station so I am adding this as a source to the article and adding a line about that. I am not sure whether I will be able to get a complete dataset to plot from BOM, this may take a while. Sent them an email asking to provide the full data set if they do not mind. Gryllida (talk) 23:20, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it raises questions about what data Daily Mail was basing their article on. They clearly said at the airport, but the data we have doesn't support it. Also, Daily Mail is not local (nor very reliable in my personal experience). However, you mentioned a photo you took of a 'weather station' (I assume it is some type of thermometer). Is the quality such that it could be in the article? Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:26, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
It seems illogical that a smooth curve such as in your chart would spike 2.5°C on a single 10 minute date point. Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:29, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
The data is also supported by the weatherzone source I just added, it specifically says the maximum was recorded at sydney airport weather station run by BOM. Unfortunately I would be able to get the photo only in about 12 hours as it is on a camera at home, if I don't get data from BOM by then I could upload it to commons and add to the story (assumng the weatherzone source is not enough and BOM does not provide a complete data set with 10 minute update interval - I just sent them an email and gave them a call about this. I find it strange that they do not have it on their own website but I think the information is accurate.). Gryllida (talk) 23:44, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Also it doesn’t seem that bad when I am lucky when it is 46c in the shade. AZOperator (talk) 01:25, 20 March 2018 (UTC) AZOperator (talk) 01:25, 20 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Gryllida: The second chart lists hundredths of a degree, but those digits on the source page aren't part of the temperature, they're in italics (it's hard to see) and are the day of the month. --Pi zero (talk) 21:00, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
fixing it now. Gryllida (talk) 21:30, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

These should all be fixed now. Mail with extra data sent to scoop. Gryllida (talk) 03:22, 20 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

OK, I'll ping @Pi zero: here because I don't have access to scoop. Also, it's my bedtime. --SVTCobra 03:26, 20 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
File:2018.03.18 Sydney-t.png is based on temperatures measured at the airport? --SVTCobra 17:06, 20 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes. It is data BOM provided in a spreadsheet for the Sydney AP weather station. Gryllida (talk) 20:33, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Title

How does "Hottest autumn day in 25 years" sound instead of "Third hottest autumn day in 78"? --SVTCobra 13:27, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Renamed, updated lede. Gryllida (talk) 20:35, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I have a problem with this statement: "As a result of the hot temperatures, an out-of-control bushfire appeared in Tarraganda and Tathra". Surely, temperatures were not so hot that things spontaneously combust into flames. Fires don't just 'appear' ... hot weather and low humidity contribute to the combustablity of the bush and grass, but this ought to be rephrased. --SVTCobra 21:16, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Reworded to "On the hot Sunday, an out-of-control bushfire took place in Tarraganda and Tathra near Bega" Gryllida (talk) 21:47, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Wow, sorry for being so terrible at math. I wish 1983 was 25 years ago. --SVTCobra 21:16, 23 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh. Yes.   (The edit summary notification appears to work. Woo.) Gryllida (talk) 22:15, 23 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Original reporting present with fresh data 03:22, 20 March 2018. Gryllida (talk) 10:30, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
In that case, the new development has to be focal point. Besides, I don’t see OR notes or OR template.

Something was reportedly sent to scoop, though I am not sure what. --SVTCobra 12:55, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
SVTCobra data for the temperature plot for the day. it is not available in any published sources online and I got it by emailing BOM Gryllida (talk) 18:31, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
SVTCobra I have now emailed it to you via special email user at meta wiki. Gryllida (talk) 18:42, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Direct-quoting a source

edit

We particularly disallow direct-quoting a source, except in the rare case a source becomes part of the story. So I reckon the direct quote from Weatherzone is going to have to go. --Pi zero (talk) 19:09, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

A rephrasing to "The present record occurred on March 18, more than a week later than the 1965 and 1983 records that had happened on the March 6 and March 9 respectively, according to the climate data published online at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website." could be considered.
