Popular articles

Now that the popular articles template is working well (and excludes non articles, deleted articles etc), i suggest we add a list of the five most popular articles to the Main Page. An example of how this could look is at User:Anonymous101/Main Page with popular articles (I'm not sure the list is in the best place, it is just an example) . /me likey. The only problem i see is that the columns are starting to become uneven. perhaps this day in history should only show one year to be shorter (which year could change every page view) example:

April 26 in 2007:

• Pilots spot 'UFOs' near the Channel Islands
• Linda Jackson confirmed mayor of Vaughan, Canada
• Democrat submits resolution to impeach Cheney

Take a look at User:Anonymous101/Main Page with popular articles/2. It's the same but with Bawolff's suggestion. Also, I don't think we should say the number of hits as it looks untidy and they are quite low, and we don't want to advertise how low it is. Anonymous101^talk 07:33, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I have to agree with you on not displaying hits. Well not so much because they are low, but more it seems somehow unprofessional to say how many hits each article got (does that make sense). They are also somewhat misleading due to bots, spiders, etc and redirect splitting. Bawolff ☺☻ 07:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, thanks for that Calebrw. Where did you find that list of system administrators? Only 5 out of the 12 people you messaged are current sysadmins. Jimbo Wales, for instance, hasn't really been involved in the sysadmin side of things for a few years now. Why is a piece of news without link?

contains no links at all. nor are there any further articles. this kind of content should not be allowed on the Main Page.

Removed "Sighted revision" from Main Page

Just to let you know, I CSS-ed out the "Sighted revision" tag from the main page since it's protected and all edits are auto-sighted. revert if you feel different. Thunderhead 03:12, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

related articles

Is there a way to list related articles just below a lead? Most news websites generally have a article with its lead and then just below that, related articles. See the BBC and other major newsites. In the past days we have had several stories on the economy and it would be great to be able to do that. Cheers --PatrickFlaherty (talk) 04:19, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Since I had noticed how news stories that promote Anonymous' activities (that they want people to know about) always seemed to appear in WikiNews almost immediately, with the current story about Dmitriy Guzner not appearing until your article today (despite the story breaking on 17 Oct and it being reported everywhere else, as per the news references you give), I was beginning to think that WikiNews had become Anonymous' own news channel. —Johnalexwood (talk) 18:43, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Image credit thing for all leads

I'm not sure the Barack Obama article should be the lead one: perhaps an article pertaining to the Jonathan Ross/Russell Brand prank calls row incident would be better as the main article. Just my opinion, however, worth commenting on. --Coldwash006 (talk) 09:25, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Purge link on main page.

Since this wikiproject is about news and news change rapidly I would suggest it would be great if we have purge link on the main page. So that users can purge the page quickly to see if there is any new updated story. --Gppande (talk) 19:20, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Date links

Actually it's not that they "don't work" it is because of Mediawiki cache'ing. You have to purge the page before anything will show up. --ShakataGaNai ^{^_^} 20:42, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Eee Laptop

Unfortunately, the front page is neigh-unusable when viewed on my (newly acquired) Eee laptop. Even in full-screen view, with an 800 pixel width, the columns for display become very cramped.

I understand that the site can only be expected to accommodate the most common resolutions and browsers. I don't fault you folks for expecting larger resolutions, especially in light of the newest, huge, cheap monitors. But my experience is very poor from this laptop, and I thought I'd point that out.

Appreciate the feed back. Unfortunately there is only so much we can do. The most common screen size is 1024x768, with more and more people going to wide screen formats. I'd like to push our layout towards bigger screens, but I can't get away with that - yet. About the only way to support a screen in 800x600 or smaller is by reducing our layout to just one column. But I can offer you this one concession. I proudly present... Main Page Lite, now with 90% less junk. Let me know how that works for you. hmm, when i tried it last on 800x600 it just collapsed to one column (which was good enough). We should try to fix this. in my opinion, it should still be at least somewhat useable all the way down to 640x480 (yeah yeah, easier said than done). Bawolff ☺☻ 01:56, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Bawolff. It shrinks down quite well to about 400 pixels wide in Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari (but remains at 2 columns: so each column is about 4 words wide, quite useable in my opinion.) What browser does your Eee laptop have? --InfantGorilla (talk) 13:36, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Main page layout

I understand its new years so the layout has changed, but i just wanted to say i am completly lost trying to get to the correct information. I would of thought there would of been atleast a link to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas but i cant seem to find it on there. Thats because the article we published on it is from December 27. We generally only display stuff on the main page for three days after its published. Perhaps we should have a section for ongoing events or something, as there is obviously still intrest in it. (Note, it can be reached at: Israeli air strikes hit government compounds in Gaza). Israeli Gaza Strike Neutrality

"Israeli ground forces enter Gaza after a week of airstrikes against Hamas in the area."

IDF allegedly claims the strikes are only against Hamas, yet over a hundred civillians are dead including children. IDF strikes with cluster bombs which leads heavy civillian casualties especially when used over a small city where civillians live crowdedly like Gaza. IDF Strikes targets Hamas true, yet it is not obvious the target is limited to them. Another case might be more neutral. Saying airstrikes are against Hamas might be covering the heavy number of civillian deaths by IDF.

Presidential seal at top of main page

Is there any reason why the presidential seal image is in the banner at the top of the main page? It makes the site look like it's part of whitehouse.gov. - Borofkin (talk) 03:19, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
