Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Jay Adams funeral article
editI admit, as I start in on this review, I'm concerned about whether this is going to work out. We greatly value original reporting, and we sure do want to encourage contributors; but one of our most basic struggles has always been how to help people know ahead of time what they need to know in order to make this sort of thing work. Helping contributors know what to do is, of course, a struggle for all the wikimedian projects; it's just particularly troublesome at Wikinews because each individual article tends to succeed or fail in — by wiki standards — a very short period of time, and people get understandably very frustrated if their first article fails (which happens quite a lot, here; we try to warn people as early as possible that they may have to think of their first article as a valuable learning experience, but we still wish for some more all-around satisfying solution). One of our more enthusiastic Wikinewsies once gave the interestingly worded advice "don't marry the article", meaning, realize that not every article will succeed and don't get so attached to it that you can't let go and move on to the next.
Anyway, I'm going to try my best for this article. --Pi zero (talk) 15:17, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
- Regardless of weather it passes or not, I appreciate the support and the time it was given, there were two articles written about the paddle-out that I've found and I'm happy about that, wish I had done my part better in covering the funeral better, because so many great things were said, but now that my first experience is behind me a little I can look forward and see if I can be helpful. I ran across this really well written Blog that covers the paddle-out Venice Celebrates The Life Of Jay Adams I just checked and it does look like the photo's have a good CC license now Jay Adams photo's so if it does pass we can add them. With some painful cuts toward the end, I did publish. Please see my review comments, and detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 01:09, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you Pi zero for everything you did, I know that was allot of time and effort you personally took on for this article, I am very grateful, this happened so quickly and not being experienced with wikinews, you saved another one Tinkermen (talk) 18:50, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
