Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.  | |

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Write your first article for Wikinews!
Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it!

Template creation edit
You see to be creating a lot of templates of dubious value in enhancing Wikinews. We tolerate, for example, user templates that may help to keep track of what various contributors may be able to offer to Wikinews, but there's a limit to how much latitude we'll give such things. - On the English Wikipedia, an editor suggested that the LSR template be added to Wikinews, so I added it (which involved adding a bunch of other supporting templates). I do not intend to contribute to Wikinews except possibly every now and then. I apologize if I added some unnecessary templates as I am not familiar with Wikinews policies. (On second thought, I wonder if the user meant the English Wikinews or another language Wikinews... hmm) The Anonymouse (talk) 08:01, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
- I just read that request over on enWP. It's been made by someone who does not contribute here, and they're not actually asking for the template to be available here; instead, they're looking to have the template on enWP transclude content from Wikinews. - Yeah, it was a misunderstanding. I've tagged all of the templates and their documentation pages for deletion under CSD A7 (feel free to delete them, either of you – seeing that both of you are administrators here). - Sorry for the late reply. I'd planned to try and do a DIY with those templates. Are you sure that is not possible ? Note that I don't know how to proceed but the idea is to reuse content from wikinews on wp, meaning, a sort of channel that transclude the latest release infos… I must try that one day on the French wikis :) Thanks all. - I am almost 100% sure that you cannot transclude pages from one wiki to another. I'm not sure if it is even technically possible, but maybe we could file a feature request on Bugzilla. The only thing remotely close to that is how Commons images can be placed on Wikipedia. The Anonymouse (talk) 07:35, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

- You are quite correct that there is no inbuilt feature for transcluding content cross-wiki/cross-project.
- To make things worse, the bot which previously carried out 'semi-automated' transclusion to portals on enWP is no more. The bot operator hasn't been seen for months, so it can be assumed that if they ran the bot on the toolserver the controlling account has been suspended due to lack of shell logins.
- I've put a reasonable amount of work into the framework which runs NewsieBot, I suspect very little incremental would be needed to reintroduce the portal-transclusion or similar functionality as wished-for here. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:10, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
