Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

A small but useful style point. Wikilinks in the body of an article should use the {{w}} template (which has several functions, but the most obvious is that it automatically implements local policy by using a local link when available, otherwise linking to Wikipedia).

For example, for Irbil, Iraq, one would write

{{w|Irbil, Iraq|Irbil}}, {{w|Iraq}}

which would produce

Irbil, Iraq

Hi. We need three paragraphs, and a bit more text, to reach our basic minimal article size. See review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 20:00, 18 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Don't forget to resubmit for review when ready. --Pi zero (talk) 20:50, 18 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Published. Congrats on your first Wikinews publication! Please see my review comments, and detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 03:09, 19 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I will try and work on those things in the future. StudiesWorld (talk) 10:38, 19 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

If I'd realized the time problem I'd have pointed it out much sooner; sorry about that. --Pi zero (talk) 07:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Pi zero: It's okay. Is there any special tag or category it should go in now? StudiesWorld (talk) 19:42, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
In the natural course of events, after four days (or more; we're behind atm) of inactivity an unpublished article gets tagged {{abandoned}}, and then after another two days it can be deleted. --Pi zero (talk) 21:49, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Pi zero: Can we move it to our user space for reference in the future? If it hadn't been for timing would this have passed? StudiesWorld (talk) 22:04, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
With OR we usually do userspace ones that don't work out; with synthesis we usually don't, except that we sometimes do on special request and often do if the reporter is a student (we have two university classes submitting articles this semester). With an unsuccessful synthesis article, I generally do a copyright check first, to reassure myself we're not saving copyvio; that's mostly why we're behind right now, because some of the abandoned articles want a copyright check first to see if they're safe to userspace.
I'll try to take a somewhat closer look at the article when I get a chance; though I probably won't be able to do a full source-check, since the amount of time and effort a full source-check takes is generally understood to be one of the limiting factors on Wikinews throughput atm (I'm hoping eventually to mitigate it with semi-automation, which I'm developing the underlying tech for in my copious free time). --Pi zero (talk) 22:39, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Pi zero: I understand that you couldn't do a full source check because it would take a while but I would appreciate any advice. Could I keep this one just for purposes of looking at my past work in comparison to my future work? StudiesWorld (talk) 23:14, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
