Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome, SpaceRocker! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hi. I've left comments in a {{cleanup}} template on the article page (representative of some of the problems the article would have to overcome before it could pass review to be published). I don't see that the statement is under terms of copyright that would allow it to be reproduced in its entirety like that (do you know differently?); I'm not sure what Michael Steenbergen's relation to the article is; and in any case it's evidently three-day-old news, which means it's already "stale" for our purposes — there would have to be new information come to light, or a new focal news event; see WN:fresh.

If you've questions — about our review practices, house style, wiki markup — just ask. There's also a lot of good information pointed to by the {{howdy}} template at the top of this user talk page. --Pi zero (talk) 20:11, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Correctly formatted Source entries use the {{source}} template; it doesn't involve creating a template for the particular source. Please take a look at the edits I've made to the article, including the edit summary-descriptions, here. --Pi zero (talk) 21:19, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've learned a lot from those changes and am reformatting. I can not change title of article? I wanted to eliminate the bias. Also I've added a fuller bio source form just 2 day ago. I understand news cycles but thee is very little information in public about this person. I am a Democratic activist and want to be factual, and eliminate any bias that comes through in my phrases. - --SpaceRocker

Edits Complete edit

Pi Zero, I tried to address all of your concerns. Three issues remain: The Title is possibly biased, Freshness is in the last 12 to 24 hours, and is there enoug info in the article to justify publication. Thanks SpaceRocker (talk) 22:26, 8 January 2012 (UTC) SpaceRockerReply

THANK YOU Pi Zero edit

Thanks for the efforts on fixing the article. You taught me a lot very quickly. Even if this is not news any longer and does not publish, or is too sparce, I now see how the system works. Taking time to fix my sources format and teach me what to do, and then fix title nd external links. Wow, I appreciate your time and am humbled.

As you may have observed, I reviewed it as not ready. I gather you've seen the history of edits during review. My review comments are on the article talk page.
Regarding activism: Wikinewsies have political opinions too. :-)  Occasionally one may have to disqualify oneself from a story due to WN:COI, but just feeling strongly about a story needn't disqualify; one can get quite skilled at writing a neutral story regardless of personal feelings (a valuable skill for any citizen of the world, imo :-). Indeed, activist contributors seem to me to have a vested interest in the neutrality, accuracy, and all-around journalistic integrity of Wikinews, as those things make the project a stronger venue in which to publish stories one wants to be taken seriously.
I'm glad I was available and could be of help. --Pi zero (talk) 23:46, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Agree Article Not Ready - Do I Kill It Somehow edit

Dear Pi Zero, there will be another round of "freshness" in about two to four weeks when/if he officially enters the race. Can I keep writing on drafts for this time period or should I kill this story/article and recreate a new one at the appropriate time? I understand I need to focus in on the actual news event this next time, which is the Congressional seat.

If you'd like, I can move the article to your user space, and you can work on it there until you're ready to move it back into mainspace and submit it for review. (I believe you should be able to rename the article yourself once your user account has been registered for more than four days.) --Pi zero (talk) 00:05, 9 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, Pi Zero if you would move the article to my space that would be good. edit

BTW I really appreciate your killing those faulty source pages I created. Thanks.
