Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Doh
editSorry for my confusion on the comments page. --Pi zero (talk) 13:02, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- Btw, if you think there are grammatical errors, it's appropriate to discuss them on the article collaboration page, or correct them (your edits are not published until reviewed). Fwiw, I think you'll find "crew" versus "crew members" really is a zombie rule; both usages correct. --Pi zero (talk) 13:12, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi. I assessed this article not-ready for publication in its current form. See my review comments, and history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 20:05, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
manual 'publish' tags
editDo not, ever, manually put the publish tag on an unpublished article. We have technical measures in place so it won't cause publication when done manually, but don't do so anyway. --Pi zero (talk) 21:21, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
- You're doing something wrong that causes this tag to get added to articles when you create them. Whatever it is you're doing that causes it, recalling the punchline of an old Vaudeville joke, don't do that. A simple way to create an article with the basic formatting elements on it is to use one of the article creation forms scattered around the site; there's one in the WN:Newsroom, there's one on the {{Howdy}} template at the top of this page, and there's one at WN:WRITE. --Pi zero (talk) 19:04, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Please do not re-submit for review with absolutely no action taken to address the points upon which an article has been marked as not ready. Repeatedly doing so may be construed as disruption. --Brian McNeil / talk 06:07, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
I deleted the photo you uploaded because it was against Wikinews's fair use policy, specifically, "media from competing news organizations uploaded without permission can be deleted on sight." —Mikemoral♪♫ 09:52, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- I also deleted File:Lindt Cafe Reopening.jpeg. Please don't continue to uploaded photos from other news agencies. This is against site policy. —Mikemoral♪♫ 09:57, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
