Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, Onewhohelps! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Hi! There was a pretty big snag in reviewing this article; my review comments are here. --Pi zero (talk) 21:25, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Take a look at the edits (including the edit summaries) I made, here, and also the suggestions I made in my reviewer comments. (I messed up using the review gadget, by forgetting to check the boxes for the five review criteria — so the review comments I meant to be part of my passing review are instead part of a "failing" review from just before publication.) --Pi zero (talk) 21:39, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
- I don't understand what you mean. Please may you clarify? -Onewhohelps (talk) 21:51, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
- The article was published. In passing it, I accidentally pushed the wrong button, with the result that the talk page has an illusory "failing" review on it before the passing review. It wasn't actually failed, in any meaningful way — it passed. Since it may be confusing, I'll tweak it on the article talk page.
- Am I misunderstanding what wanted clarifying? --Pi zero (talk) 22:08, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, it was my fault. I am using my smart phone so as soon as I saw failed I jumped to conclusions instead of scrolling down. --Onewhohelps (talk) 22:22, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sometimes I'm just too low key. Here's what I should have said at the very start of my first comment in this thread:
- Congratulations! Your article has been published, and is now featured on the main page and piped out to Google News!

Did you want this saved? I can move it to your user space for you. If not, I'll deleted it as abandoned, which is what happens to most articles that don't get published. It can't stay in mainspace indefinitely. --Pi zero (talk) 18:21, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, please. :D --Onewhohelps (talk) 18:24, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- Done --Pi zero (talk) 18:52, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
