Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

The article is published. I could have done better explaining each edit in the summary. Well, you can compare the initial and the final revision. (I could not manage it properly). It is an interesting article and a good synthesis. You could have added other points about how they calculated the revolution period, and the "comet-like appearance". I have added it. As a newcomer, the article quality was seriously good, but you can improve. Are you interested in science/astronomy related articles? I hope to see more of your articles here soon. :-)

- Thanks for looking at it and expanding the article. I'll make sure to note those things for next time. Yeah, I'm interested in astronomy and technology-related articles, so that's probably what I'll be writing about :). Thanks again! -- numbermaniac 00:56, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
{{under review}}
editDo not edit articles that are tagged under review. You can leave a note on the article's talk page while somebody is reviewing the article.
acagastya 07:23, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry, I just thought it might've been too minor to point out on the talk page, and you hadn't edited for 2.5 hours so I wasn't sure if you were actually there. Sorry! -- numbermaniac 07:46, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
- I write articles in my journal to review them. So I am slow. There are many reasons to do that.

Hello again. Just for the safer side, while the article is "under review", you can click "Collaboration" tab and comment on edits. Otherwise, you can wait until the article is published (or rejected). --George Ho (talk) 08:43, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
- When it comes time for the reviewer to submit a review of an article, there's a gadget they use; if the article has a collaboration page, the review gadget requires the reviewer to check a box saying they've read everything important on the collaboration page. That's meant to make sure if you say something on the collaboration page of an article that's under review, the reviewer will read what you've written, at least before they actually submit their review. It usually works (although reviewers have to be a little careful about double-checking for a collaboration page created after the last time they edited the article). --Pi zero (talk) 13:37, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
- Ah, was not aware of that. Good to know, thanks! -- numbermaniac 01:31, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
- I can not submit article for review and then review it.

The template will first check if there is an internal link. If yes, it will create local link. Else, it will create a link to Wikipedia's article. Try this: FC Barcelona and Xavi.
acagastya 07:50, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- Ohh, I thought it was the green underlining gadget that was changing the links, haha. Thanks! -- numbermaniac 08:25, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- It helps in the situations when we are not sure if there is a local page, but we can't check, probably because we are doing something more important, or in a hurry, or to be in a safer zone, or XYZ reasons, :-P

You know...
editIt will save reviewer's time of you link the important things in the article before submitting for review. There are times when you can't, maybe because you forgot, or were too busy or didn't have time — but don't make it a habit. Also, you did read about wn:future. You know, anything can happen in the future.

- Apologies, not sure how it skipped my mind. Thanks for the comments on the article - will review and fix. -- numbermaniac 00:44, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
Hi. I encountered problems on preliminary check. Review comments. Acagastya also had made some edits earlier, and left some embedded comments. --Pi zero (talk) 19:35, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
- Published. Thanks and congrats. Review comments, detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 22:35, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for reviewing it and for making further improvements! -- numbermaniac 01:49, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
Astronomers discovers tiniest dwarf star, smaller than Jupiter
editInterested to write about it?
Make it quick. We should do it as soon as possible.
acagastya 08:11, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
- Oh nice! I'll get into it as soon as possible. -- numbermaniac 09:35, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you. (By the way, please ping me from the next time)
acagastya 10:40, 13 July 2017 (UTC)- Are you writing about it? Please put it on-wiki so that I can see/add something. If you haven't, and don't intent to start soon, let me know so that I can write about it.
acagastya 13:17, 13 July 2017 (UTC)- @Acagastya: I've started to write the article at Astronomers discover smallest known star; feel free to rename it and add more to it. -- numbermaniac 01:48, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Maybe I should save it so that I can review it. I can add other information later.

- Can you join #wikinews-en on freenode IRC now?
acagastya 06:10, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. Real life and the tragedies.
acagastya 17:21, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- No worries. Thanks for reviewing it. -- numbermaniac 01:11, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
Published. Please see WN:where and WN:attribute. A couple of sentences were too close to the sources. Else, it was okay. Good work. From the next time, submit the article for review if you think everything's done and you need to go. Sorry for the delay.
acagastya 14:37, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tips - will make sure to keep in mind. Again, no worries about the delay :) -- numbermaniac 15:07, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
Wimbledon
editThere are two articles about tennis coming up. Can you write two core news articles so that the main page does not look like tennis website?
acagastya 15:55, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- Milky Way is trending on Twitter. Missy be stunt discovery you might want to write about.
acagastya 16:07, 15 July 2017 (UTC)- I've got a few things that need to be done today, so I'm not sure about two, but I'll try and do at least one. Darkfrog looks like he's writing another space article, which helps. -- numbermaniac 01:53, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

- Are you planning to write? (if yes, should we do that on etherpad?) I would be in college for the next two and half hours, so I would not be able to respond by then. (Don't ping me on IRC)
acagastya PING ME! 08:33, 4 August 2017 (UTC)- By the way, there are seven articles in the review queue. If you have some time, can you copyedit those articles. It would be really helpful. Thanks.
118.151.209.30 (talk) 08:38, 4 August 2017 (UTC)- I don't think I plan on writing about this one; you're welcome to do it yourself, @Acagastya:. But yes, 7 articles in the review queue...that might be the most I've seen! I will have a look at them, thanks. -- numbermaniac 08:40, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
- LOL! Seven isn't even close to what I have seen. (At times, it crosses 50). Thanks for letting me know. You should join IRC. There is no other Instant Messaging facility that we share :-P
27.59.123.183 (talk) 08:59, 4 August 2017 (UTC)- 50...jeez! Do we even manage to get through them all when it's like that? I imagine many of those would end up losing freshness :o -- numbermaniac 09:06, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

ASCII characters
editYou might have noticed that (“) is different from ("). Sometimes, the quotes copied from sources use those symbols, but we use only ("). Also, I have noticed Microsoft Word, and macOS would convert the later to the former one. If you want an automated script for this, add importScript("User:Acagastya/space.js");
to your commons.js page.
acagastya PING ME! 05:49, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Acagastya: Yeah, I realised my mistake there once you edited it. Thanks! Also, in regards to the name, I'm fine with that name, but I think a space needs to be included between "Australia:" and "Victoria". -- numbermaniac 05:56, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
Archives splash page
editAt the suggestion (last year, I think?) of a veteran Wikinewsie, I'm trying to design an upgraded archives splash page. Fwiw. I mean to take advantage of wikidialog, hopefully in simple but effective ways thereby making it very cool. Like all things dialog-related it's gotten bogged down in development atm; but, you can see how it's shaped up so far at User:Pi zero/Archives. --Pi zero (talk) 12:04, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
- Ohh, nice. That's a lot of complicated wiki markup, ouch - I'll definitely have a look at it and try to understand what's going on there. Thanks! -- numbermaniac 08:18, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

editCC @Darkfrog24: Need some help. Any plans to cover about ongoing protests for Catalonian independence and French president Macron bringing up some "controversial" labour laws.

acagastya PING ME! 13:33, 22 September 2017 (UTC)- Got any links? (Incl. coverage on another Wiki.) Darkfrog24 (talk) 18:55, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

- @Darkfrog24: for which one?
- @acagastya and Darkfrog24: NPR News, Latin American Herald News, and Associated Press seem to cover the Catalonian independence. More from Associated Press. Reuters video, Reuters article, and BBC News cover Macron signing labour reform laws. --George Ho (talk) 00:10, 23 September 2017 (UTC)
