Welcome edit
Maoririder, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Style guide - how articles should look before publishing
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- Audio Wikinews could always use more contributors
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! → CGorman (Talk) 15:08, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
Adding stories without writing content. edit
Hello and welcome to Wikinews. I noticed you have been submitting stories without fleshing out the content in recent days. I am assuming these are test pages and am deleting them to keep them from cluttering up the front page. If you really want these stories to appear on Wikinews - then you will need to re-submit them and write them yourself - or at least start them with three good paragraphs or sentences that explain the who, what, when, where and how of the story. Other than that, thanks for taking an interest in creating stories. -- Davodd | Talk 00:22, 28 July 2005 (UTC)
- I see that you are still doing this. Please stop, and do as Davodd has suggested instead. Uncle G 15:23:35, 2005-08-01 (UTC)
I will try. --Maoririder 15:27, 1 August 2005 (UTC) Three good sentences okay I will try. --Maoririder 15:30, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Have a look at the Five Ws and the Wikinews:style guide for some guidelines. Uncle G 15:41:59, 2005-08-01 (UTC)
Thanks. --Maoririder 15:43, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
Yahoo! is not a source? It is a top news site. i don't understand. What do most people use to add information to WikiNews, CNN, Google News, Yahoo! News, etc? --Maoririder 18:39, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yahoo! News is a news aggregation service. It's not an actual source. The source will be whatever news service Yahoo! is displaying the content from. Also note that you aren't putting the article dates in the correct field in the {{source}} template. They go in the "date" field, not in the "pub" field. Uncle G 19:02:40, 2005-08-01 (UTC)
I can still use Yahoo! News? Google News is not that updated like Yahoo! News. --Maoririder 18:58, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Google News is an automated news aggregation service, too, just like Yahoo! News. Uncle G 19:02:40, 2005-08-01 (UTC)
This is hard to follow but I'am trying. --Maoririder 19:04, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
When do you think the pages will be published? I see that the Iran story got published actually quickly. --Maoririder 19:45, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- When they actually gain some content. They have hardly any. Many of them are unpublishable in their current form, and some of them are outright speedily deletable. If you want your stories published, please go back over them and flesh them out so that they answer the Five Ws, as mentioned above. Look at Australian warship sunk as artificial reef, and compare it with Niger is hit with a food crisis. Uncle G 03:16:34, 2005-08-02 (UTC)
Brain-dead woman pic edit
Do you think a picture of her is necessary? I'm doubtful, but if you wish to pursue, I will show you how. -Edbrown05 17:14, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
Would a picture help? Not nesacerly for the woman but something along the lines of a health symbol. --Maoririder 17:16, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
- on a 'health symbol', not sure what would be applicible. -Edbrown05 17:25, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
One your picture wiki site do you have anything that would go with the article? --Maoririder 17:26, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
- there are kinds of things that could be put there... picture of melanoma skin disease, picture of Mrs. Torres, picture of a fetus. Most appropriate would be picture of the new born. But that's not likely. -Edbrown05 17:41, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
Why is it not likely? Picture of a new born baby would that work? but also maybe a health symbol like I was saying hopefully we can come up with something. --Maoririder 17:43, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
Still no picture?? Template:Reqimage

New articles edit
Hello Mauoririder. I'd like to ask you, when creating articles, to at least write the first portion of the article. Do not list a story as breaking unless there really is a story. Stories without sources or references, and with a single sentence without necessary context, will be deleted as there is not enough there to begin writing with. - Amgine 20:40, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Its maoririder and thanks
- Where the article does not contain any source or context, it will be deleted as nonsense as no one else can decipher it. Where there is at least a source and context, I will add {{minimal}}, which states the article will be deleted within 3 days. - Amgine 20:50, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
That does not seem fair because anyone can write a news article its "free" please help expand! Maoririder 20:52, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
- Maoririder: If you do not give enough information for anyone to determine what story you want someone else to write, we cannot help, and your contribution cannot be expanded. You must at least include minimal information such as where you saw the story originally, who is doing something, what are they doing, where are they doing it, how are they doing it, and possibly why they are doing it.
- To give you an example, "Politician announces investigation into why at least 80 child death inquiries were stopped." This is a real story. Please try to write an article about it. - Amgine 20:59, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
I will try to write something everyone can work with? Maoririder 21:02, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Immature edit
The article Saddam Hussein's exposure to CIA was deleted due to the nonsense of the article, which was IMHO very immature. Please view the style guide. --Mrmiscellanious 21:32, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed edit
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Maoririder. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Maoririder~enwikinews that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
