A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

GM rice research continues despite protest attacks in Philippines

edit

I have reviewed GM rice research continues despite protest attacks in Philippines and left feedback at Talk:GM rice research continues despite protest attacks in Philippines. The article is not news because events occurred last Thursday, way outside the 48 hour window. Please consider writing about a new and more newsworthy topic. --LauraHale (talk) 07:42, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Looking at articles from a reviewer perspective...

Reviewing an article for Wikinews about Paralympic swimmer

Reviewing an article for Wikinews about athletics

When I was doing reviews this morning, I screencast a number of them with the hope student contributors and other Wikinews reporters could see what reviewers are looking at and better understand some of what we are looking at. Hopefully you may find these helpful for understanding what we look for, bearing in mind that every reviewer does look at things slightly differently and no two reviews are the same.--LauraHale (talk) 12:17, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unsolicited advice

edit

On the Vodaphone article......it's over. Take my advice: the best thing you can learn here is how/when to know it's over on an article. You tried real hard on that one. Learn from the reviewer remarks and find a new article. Read the reviewer comments collectively and take those to heart. You may even need to walk away and lick your wounds for a few days; but, to keep hacking away at an article like its some dead animal is of little use to you at this point. Success here, really, demands a good measure of humility. You/I don't own articles here, we contibute them.....they work or they don't. If they don't, back up, take a deep breath and move forward: there's always more news just around the bend! Stay with it, OK? --Bddpaux (talk) 15:10, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Transcripts for 'Port Kembla residents keep faith in their region' article

edit

Saxon Crinis Interview transcript:

Why do you think the stack should not be demolished? Because it shows the great history that our region has, the stack reminds us of the Illawarra early years as a manufacturing, steel producing community that became a home to people from all over the world.

What do you think the stack symbolised the Port Kembla community?

What activity have you witnessed in your local area of protesting to the stacks demolishment? A Facebook page, signs around town, protest meetings

Do you think the there is a revitalisation of Wentworth street occurring right now? If so what are the signs? I think there slowly is, there are more businesses along the strip now, you notice a lot more people walking up the street whether it just be there are going for a leisurely walk or they are going into one of the shops. Also there is a café on the street, which is great for bringing people to the street.

How is Wentworth Street changing its reputation? I think it’s changing because it is slowly losing that stigma that has been associated with the street for so long. The one that people think that drugos and hookers are everywhere. It’s slowly starting to get a new identity with a real sense of community.

Being a resident on Wentworth Street how do you see the street changing? And what do you thing needs to be done to achieve the popularity and community hustle and bustle it used to have? I don’t think it will ever be what it used to in its hay day., but I think with a good mix of resident living in apartments that are fixed up and a mixture of businesses that the locals can use and ones that provide services to people from Wollongong I think it will add to the vibe of the street. I also think the building facades should be kept the same and upgraded if need be. I don’t think developers should be allowed to change the look of the street, I think that will lose the streets identity.

Rosie (did not want last name revealed) shop owner on Wentworth Street, Port Kembla

How long have you lived in Port Kembla for? I came here with my family when I was eleven years old (44 years ago from Vincenza), and my father worked at the steel works his whole life. The stack, as well as this whole town represents the opportunity my family had to start a new life. (Rosie has lived here ever since)

How long have you owned your store on Wentworth Street? My husband and I have owned our greengrocer and deli for almost 30 years. Port Kembla is our home and we have witnessed a lot of changes in 30 years, especially Wentworth street.

How do you feel about the proposed demolishment of the Port Kembla stack? I think the stack is part of our community; it has been here longer than I have. It shouldn’t be demolished.

What do you think the stack represents to Port Kembla? The stack is what you recognise along the Illawarra skyline, its what represents industrial history of the Illawarra and more importantly Port Kembla. Even though it isn’t used anymore it’s a symbol of our history.

How do you think the stack could be otherwise utilised if it weren’t to be demolished? Maybe build a museum at the base with photos and other buts and pieces from the steel work to show what jobs people had an what different country’s they came form to get work here in the Illawarra.

Port Kembla, New South Wales residents keep faith in their region

edit

Hi. I have marked the article not ready for review and left feedback on Talk:Port Kembla, New South Wales residents keep faith in their region. The article does not make clear why this is news now. There is no sense of time. The word current is used, but does not give an idea of what this means. (The earth is currently not in an ice age. The kitten is currently sitting in my lap. Both have different perspectives on the factual amount of time that current means. This needs clarity for the sake of accuracy.) At this point, I would suggest refocusing the article on the interview aspect in the very first paragraph. Make the article about the interview, and use the sources to provide supplemental information to compliment the interview. --LauraHale (talk) 07:47, 16 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I've reviewed the article and left feedback at Talk:'Migrant' murder sparks racially charged riots in Moscow, Russia. Given the slowness of our getting reviews done at the moment, the article lead needs to be supported by a second source and the article needs a rename to stay newsworthy. --LauraHale (talk) 09:21, 16 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your interview

edit

I understand you interviewed (?) a folk about the Port. I have provided relevant feedback at the bottom of article talk page. I need to apologise for not doing it earlier: I think there is lack of clarity about what exactly the article is about and where it takes information from, and you should feel more free to step in on the article talk page in a timely fashion to work things out. I would also keep looking but interactive contact is vital to getting the work published. Gryllida 09:33, 16 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
