Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Is their anyway you can upload the audio file of the UN event? Also how did you get in, do you have credentials from somewhere? Keep up the good work :) Irunongamesplay 00:27, 19 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have a real press pass as well, that is how I did many other photos of ministers for Wikimedia. No, will not upload video, will develop the story instead, when I get a better idea of what the guys think. Tomorrow another origianal story and photos will (hopefully) appear - me and another wiki photographer is covering the wedding of the crown princess in Sweden. As accredited photographers, among the big press agencies. For links to images of wedding see http://in2pic.com/wiki --user:Janwikifoto
Mind if I ask how you got the press badge? Not that I am questioning that you have one, just the fact that we have been wanting press badges since the creation of the wikinews:AR program. Irunongamesplay 01:18, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I get paid for writing (other) stories and pictures. That is how you get a real press pass. That is also why I am not going to upload any entire recordings, I am not going to provide full background for anybody to do a longer story, and sell to some other magazine. I might write a story, when it is 'I-was-there' stuff, for free for wiikinews. However now the publishing delay is too long. I could come up with some ideas for press badge access, if any "God-of-Wikinews" would materialise and discuss. --user:Janwikifoto --Janwikifoto (talk) 09:48, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it is still morning, as it got quite late yesterday after doing photos of Crown Princess Victorias wedding. Did you know that Wikimedia got two press photographer accreditations (official badges)? Along with AFP and other big bears. --user:Janwikifoto --Janwikifoto (talk) 10:09, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
The gods of wikinews started talking about badges again a few days ago:
  1. User_talk:Brian_McNeil#Fixing_Wikinews_post-apocalypse (8th to 13th June)
  2. User:Tristan Thomas/accreditation
  3. Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy#Accreditation 2.0 (13th to 21st June)
Thanks for offering your ideas. --InfantGorilla (talk) 12:10, 24 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Email for scoop edit

Sorry, the email address is scoop@wikinewsie.org. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 19:50, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi! You left two e-mail addresses on this page. Usually it's better to leave a link to your account's registered e-mail address, like [[Special:EmailUser/Amgine|e-mail Amgine!]], which becomes the link e-mail Amgine!. This prevents your e-mail address being harvested by spammers. - Amgine | t 13:20, 3 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Restored edit

I have restored your essay on Moka's visit to Sweden. Not, I hasten to add, because of your shrill protestations elsewhere. But, to let everyone else see your attempt to hold the project hostage.

I've a good mind to point Moka at your hubris on the talk page. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:22, 22 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, back to basics then! Disregarding your feelings towards me, based on a full non-restricted Creative Commons license, would
(a) the topic be interesting
(b) would the text as-is be _acceptable_ (different from what you would like)
(c) if not _acceptable_, exactly what and how would need to be changed, as a minimum

Have a nice day, --Janwikifoto (talk) 10:43, 22 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok, we go back to the standard CC-license, without any chnages, and see what happens then! I give up! --Janwikifoto (talk) 01:58, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Amgine (talk · contribs) has made a start, on the talk page, at revising your essay into a news article. You could help by clarifying a few points there. Your original essay might be of interest for publication on the WMF blog. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:20, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
