Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Arab Spring by country
editCan you help me out there just a bit? "Spring"??--Bddpaux (talk) 21:55, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
- Presumably Arab Spring. An umbrella category for all these is an interesting idea; I'll give some thought to how best to handle it. It'll probably want renaming, for one thing, as the "by country" part strikes me as encyclopedic, unless this were a strictly internal category (not to be used on articles). --Pi zero (talk) 22:36, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, we're currently debating on this renaming on the French version. JackPotte (talk) 05:29, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- French Wikinews? Do they make a habit of putting news articles in encyclopedic categories? A category "Arab Spring" isn't unreasonable, but there's no need whatsoever to break it down by country. That's what DPL is for, one can trivially construct an intersection of "Arab Spring" articles for country x. --Brian McNeil / talk 06:07, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- Done I've renamed the category Category:Arab Spring. JackPotte (talk) 07:02, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. I saw that you created the article Twitter and Youtube are still blocked in Turkey for two weeks with a {{publish}} tag. Unfortunately, articles on English Wikinews need to undergo a peer review process before they can be published, so I've removed the {{publish}} template and replaced it with {{develop}}. You can move it to {{review}} if you think it is ready for publication. You might also want to check out the links in the welcome template at the top of this page and have a look through our guidelines; for example, we don't use inline references tags (although I'm not sure why). - OK. JackPotte (talk) 08:40, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- Turkey announces a tax for Twitter has not been edited for a substantial period of time; you may wish to take another look at it, lest it be deleted (in two days time, for inactivity). Thanks, Microchip08 (talk) 22:09, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help, but I've already tried everything I could and it seems to be beyond my threshold. JackPotte (talk) 22:11, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
